Zephirine Drouhin does it repeat bloom?
Comments (4)If you give it good sun, it can rebloom some, mainly in the fall. This was one of the roses that made me give up spraying, because I could not figure out how to stop it from dropping most of its leaves. I finally started using it as a living trellis for annual vines/clematis, and that dressed it up for the summer time. Still one of my favorite roses, primarily for its scent....See MoreZepherine Drouhin--not blooming much. Help?
Comments (15)When I got my ZD from Chamblee's 8 or 9 years ago, I was told not to expect blooms in the first year. And she didn't bloom but grew a lot. However, she bloomed from the second year on. After the spectacular spring flush I usually get a second less spectacular flush that goes on till July and then ZD blooms again very well in fall. Last year in that horrible drought she produced a few blooms in August; it was out of the ordinary and frightening. I usually have to cut off a lot of dead wood but this winter half of the plants were dried out dead wood; not cankered: dead. But this rose is so vigorous that there are plenty of new canes to replace the dead ones. In my experience ZD likes to be fed well and appreciates regular watering if rain is lacking....See MoreDeadheading Zephrine Drouhin
Comments (6)I don't agree about not pruning a rose the first several years. You just don't need to thin old canes in the first years, but if a rose puts out enough growth to be trained and/or pruned you shouldn't delay. I grow both Zephy and Kathleen Harrop, the light pink sport. I didn't deadhead Zephy because it is growning on a tall lattice where I can't reach, but I did deadhead KH which is growning on a shorter pillar. And last summer I had the best rebloom ever on KH, but hardly anything on Zephy (which is usual). So... maybe deadheading had something to do with better rebloom, though KH also gets full sun and is in a less challenging situation so that could be a factor....See MoreZephrine Drouhin -- mildew magnet??
Comments (7)Mine is mildewed now, too - mostly the new growth. It was better last year, but still had some disease. I've been considering replacing it. I don't spray fungicides, although spraying a blast of water early in the morning helps wash the mildew away - so long as it dries by evening, it's fine. Our cooler weather is promoting mildew - once it's reliably above 90 degrees for a number of days, then PM dies off. I have some mildew on a few other roses, but ZD is the worst. I certainly have the impression that ZD is a problem in California. I also don't get the repeat on it that I'd hoped to get, although it has scattered rebloom right now. My bet is that if you don't want to spray, and you want a clean plant in that highly visible spot, you need to replace ZD. Anita...See Morejean_ar
