Treating Rust

I recently bought a Duke plumie--it had rust on it & the vendor spray it for me. I sprayed it myself a week later, hoping that would have taken care of the problem. It didn't!

Does anyone have any advice on what to put on it or in the soil? I have read in other forums, that I should put a systemic called Bayleton. I have not been able to find it locally. Does anyone know of anything else that will work??

I know I should cut the leaves off, but the plant has a couple inflo's that will be blooming pretty soon.

I have this plant FAR away from my other plumies!

Where are you located? Chris Roy of Orange County Farm Supply in Orange gave a lecture to the SCPS on treating rust and carries the various chemicals. By the way stripping off your leaves should not stop flowering. Bill

I have just today noticed a few of my plummies have a bad case of rust and have also wondered if there is something I can spray or treat them with. I broke off some of the leaves, not as carefully as I should have, and wonder if there is anything more I can do. Or since they are going to be going into dormancy, is it ok to just brake off all the leaves and leave them be untill spring?

I found some instructions for you... There are several fungicides on the market that are used to treat rust. They rely on oil, copper, sulfur or even baking soda as their active ingredient. Unfortunately, once the rust is on leaf surfaces, fungicides limit only the spread of the disease. If you want to actually prevent its appearance, you have to begin spraying before it appears and continue spraying throughout the growing season. Do this as often as every seven to 10 days. Because this can be very time-consuming, there are other options to consider. * At the first sign of rust, remove infected leaves and toss them in the trash, not the compost pile. * Water the base of plants with care to avoid splashing the foliage. Wet leaves can encourage the arrival of rust. * Provide good air circulation around plants, especially those near walls and fences. * Disinfect pruners with a mild bleach solution when pruning plants prone to rust.

"Your mileage may vary" LOL, how true! Hi Maryl, yes, like most things, rust has a season when conditions favor its growth. In this area, we usually have two rust periods per year. Rust grows best when temperatures are moderate, something like 50 to 70 degrees F and the foliage stays wet for several hours. Here, we usually have 80% relative humidity, so it's usually wet enough. As the temperatures rise in spring and fall in autumn, we see active rust. Rust usually subsides during the heat of summer. Zones with very cold winter temperatures will kill the rust or severely set it back. Most zones, like yours and north will only have one period of rust per year; in the fall. But if weather conditions favor rust and you have a very susceptible plant, you might see it in the late spring. I think the blackspot on your roses would be a good indicator, as I think rust needs much the same conditions to grow. To prevent rust from getting into your garden from new arrivals. Remove all green foliage from the plant, soak in a 5% bleach solution for an hour, rinse well and plant. Ed

A plant that was grown in a pot for that length of time has a root ball that is "pot bound" and if that plant is put in a garden the root ball needs to be "broken", pulled apart so the roots will reach out for moisture and nutrients. If this is not done the roots stay in the root ball and that is usually so dense that that root ball will repel water so the plant does not get the moisture it needs. Some ferns are host plants for "rusts" that are harmful to other plants but seldom is the "rust" harmful to the host plant, harmful to the point of killing the host plant.

Ospho - available at the paint store, hardware, building supply. I used it on a completely rusty shed, walls of 100% surface rust.. pitted too. Then topped it with rustolium about 1999. Shed gets hit by mist from sprinkler system and will grow green mold that maybe once every two years gets a clorox scub. It hasn't showed any more rust.

The rust will remain in the plant/soil even if you strip off the leaves. It is carried by the wind. You need a product containing Bayleton to rid the plant of the rust. Bayer makes a granular lawn fungicide as does Hi Yield with contain Bayleton and they are systemic. At this time of the year, as your plants are going dormant, I would just carefully remove the leaves, dispose of them in a plastic bag. Next spring when you begin to get new growth, sprinkle the granuals in each pot and water in well. Most recommendations I have seen say to treat in the spring, summer and again in the fall. It doesn't take much perhaps a few tablespoons in small pots and as much as a quarter cup to the larger pots.

Do not put it on very small seedlings.

It does work, I have used it for several years myself but you do have to stay on it or it comes back.

Have you noticed any excess leaf drop using Bayleton? Several of my plants have rust, and I put the Bayleton granules in the pots and around the base of the ones in the ground. Today I noticed many of my plants have lost about 60% of their leaves, and a lot of the remaining leaves have turned yellow. Now, we have had a couple of nights in the low 50's so I don't know if it is the temps or the fungicide.

I have never noticed any appreciable leaf drop from the Bayleton. I have really neglected mine this year with all the weird weather and the leaf drop I am experiencing now (a lot!) is due I think to the cool snap we had about a month ago. The days are shorter and even with the warm up, they seem to be dropping leaves and getting ready to rest.

Actually, I got them on eBay from a company in PA. There's a place in Punta Gorda that has Bayleton liquid and granules. The granules are actually a lawn fungicide. The place is Sunshine Gardens, and they have a listing on eBay. The PA place was much cheaper even with shipping, but they don't have a listing anymore.

Thanks for the information. I was hoping it was the weather and not the Bayleton. I, too, have neglected my plants this year. There were loving the hot, humid weather and I didn't notice the start of rust until late September. I tried Orthenex, but it didn't do much good that I could see. By the time I got the Bayleton, the rust had taken over most of my plants. I have two sad, denuded DSPs that should be nice and green. :(
