You would love Black Magic if you prefer the cooler red tones. Intrigue is another that is gorgeous, though it really should be classified as red/purple.

Wow, great pics of some classic roses. I love the velvety texture of red roses.

American Spirit is one of the J&P roses that dropped quickly out of commerce. It's no longer commercially available.

Mine came with the house. It's the only rose I didn't tear out when we moved in. It has Zero fragrance, but with blooms like that (Perfect form, unfading color, true red and Looong vase life) I just had to keep it. It's a bloom machine ... just lacks the scent.

And yes, I do have other red HTs (just not any good pics of them yet.)

Others I grow:

Black Baccarra - no fragrance, tends to ball up in rain
Black Magic - velvety and beautiful
Papa Meilland - no blooms yet
Veteran's Honor - Nice and regal
Red Masterpiece - intoxicating fragrance
Deep Secret - not any good blooms yet
Ingrid Bergman - Huge blooms, not much fragrance

Then there are the floribundas and the minis, but that's another story.

Oh what lovely photos of red roses. American Spirit just took my breath away. I am crazy about Oklahoma--it has such a deep red with an intoxicating scent. I certainly would love to see a photo of yours.

How does your lasting love perform? I just planted it last year--the foliage which is clean and a beautiful shade of green, are a great backdrop for the roses. However, my bush is rather small. I am hoping it will be more vigorous this year.

Great reds, what camera are you using?

WOW, what gorgous RED roses. I am really pleased to see these pictures as I just pickup Mr. Lincoln, Chrysler Imperial, Black Magic, Intrigue and Don Juan myself. I still need to try Oklahoma.

how does the bush of don juan look? how is it with desease? would it be good in zone 6 Ma

Please don't laugh now, but last year I found out that I'm colorblind (problems with red tones), and just today I bought my first "red" rose, a Trumpeter. The funny part is that to you all Trumpeter may appear orange, but to me it honestly looks bright red, just like your pretty pictures. Isn't that too strange? Hopefully my friends and neighbors won't need sunglasses before looking at Trumpeter...lol.

Great reds indeed. Another couple that I like are Beloved aka Cesar E. Chavez, Let Freedom Ring, and Olympiad. They are well worth considering when choosing reds to plant.

Hello - I'm interested in red (or deep orange) roses for a slightly different reason: I want names of roses to use as Kennel Club Registered names for a litter of Irish Setter Puppies. I managed to get nine names for Rosie's first litter two years ago, but am a bit stumped this time. I LIKE some of the ones on this posting which are new to me. I'm hoping for a second and final litter from Rosie this autumn. The roses need to be attractive, disease resistant and hardy! It took a lot of time and effort and thought to come up with names for the last litter - Atlantic Star, Pathfinder, Danny Boy, Dublin Bay, Galway Bay, Rob Roy,Heart of Gold, Charisma and Little Flame. I put a photo of each rose in the individual puppy packs. All other suggestions gratefully received!

Hildaross, that's quite unique! I have Robusta and Altissimo- both supposed to be hardy. Their blooms are singles and bold red. Hot Cocoa is a beautiful rose- deep orangey-red, and supposed to be resistant. Pick up any rose catalog and you can take your pick of names. It's a cute idea! Brandy
