ACK! help I don't know if I messed up

Hi all,

I obtained two plumeria cuttings from a silent auction. they are quite withered, but a good length. the bottoms were very callused. I took a sharp clean kitchen knife and planted in a mixture of 1/3peat 1/3supersoil 1/3vermiculite, with some dynamite slow release fertilizer in a 1 gallon pot. my question is should i have cut the end off (the callus) and what do i do if i was wrong?

thanks so much i really dont want to lose these cuttings, someone actually gave them to me.. sentimental value.

i guess for now i am going to take them out and dip into a rooting hormone, and replace into mixture

I would have cut the branch off a couple of inches from the bottom at a diaganol and just planted it in the mixture....water good once and let it dry out befor i watered it again...since its getting close to dorment season....water it once and leave it alone till spring.....people are going to tell you use this and that and do this and that.....if its going to root ...it will root.......

Hey, hope I can help... I'd leave the callus, the callus is good... wet the tip and dip in rooting hormone (with fungicide if possible)... then plant in well draining soil (which you probably have)... water a little, since it doesn't have roots, the water will just sit at the base... the cutting needs warmth to grow roots... go to plumeria101.com... great stuff, and it should answer any loose ends that we didn't tie up...

Describing the shape and color of the bulb will help. What are the children shaped like? Look at the bulb carefully and describe it like you were writing and essay and wanted the class to guess what you were writing about. Some bulbs have an onion like skin. Tulips have a darker skin than a daffodil so you could say It is shaped similar to a medium large onion with a greenish skin and thick opening with brown dead wide stalks or stems where leaf petals will grow. Oh, this might be amarylis would be my thought. Or a lily would be many white petals or scales on the bulbs and so forth. TOO MANY BULBS NOT TO HAVE AN IN DEPTH DESCRIPTION.

"Spotco, as Quirky suggested, now is not the time to start doing anything major to improve your yard." Why not? Summer is when S.A. is actively growing. S.A. spreads rapidly by creeping stolons, not seeds. St. Augustine grass can be successfully established from plugs anytime during the growing season if water is available. Do some research for establishing S.A. turf, theres alot of info out there. Also, have you considered using mulch or ground cover instead of grass in some of those bald areas. Say Under/around all trees??? A few things about lawn care: First: and most important in your case. Sharpen That Mower Blade!! That grass looks like it was chewed by a snaggle toothed rabbit. Keeping the mower blades sharp and properly balanced is important. A leaf cut by a sharp blade will heal over more quickly and lose less water than a leaf blade shredded by a dull mower blade. Second: Mowing frequency and cutting height need to be carefully considered for a healthy lawn. Using the highest cutting height on the mower will facilitate turfgrass drought-conditioning. This will increase the grass leaf area, allowing for more photosynthesis. This results in more carbohydrates, which are then available for use in recovery from stresses such as drought. The higher the mowing height, the deeper and more extensive the root system will be. Although transpiration (water loss through leaves) will be slightly greater with higher mown turf, the expanded root system proves more advantageous. Third: Apply only enough water to wet the soil in the rootzone. 3/4 inch of water is generally sufficient. Do not water the lawn again until signs of wilt occur again. This technique works regardless of turfgrass species, soil type, season, or other environmental conditions. Hope this helps

I saw your pix on the lawn forum. I tried something this year that worked for some of my weeds. It is a three part process so it might not work for a large lawn, but here it is. I had oxalis in full shade. 1. Sprayed with soapy sugary water as a sticking agent. 1 tsp of dish soap and 2 ounces of molasses to a quart of water. 2. Dusted the wet leaves with baking soda and allowed it to dry. Load a sock with baking soda and tap the side to let the dust fall out onto the weed. It does no damage to the sock so you can use any sock. 3. Sprayed with strong vinegar. Even in full shade the oxalis melted away. Here are the pictures. My apologies for the picture quality. I set up the tripod and did not realize how bad they would look until it was done. The target weed is on the left side of the tree trunk. In the first one I had done steps 1 and 2 the previous day with no ill effect. Second one was taken immediately after spraying with vinegar. You can see the foaming on the leaves. Third was taken after 5 minutes. You can see the yellow flower petals wilting a little. The rest of the leaves were doing the same but you can't really tell. Fourth was taken at 30 minutes. Wilt is evident. This one was taken an hour later. The plant has wilted away just like I would expect on a hot, sunny day. Here's the first one again for direct before and after comparison. Again, this was in full shade (north side of tree) on a day in the high 60s.

Hi Plllog! "That is, I know it's possible, but might not be in your budget." See, there's the crux of it. This little beverage center idea of mine was not in the original budget. (Nor, alas, were new drywall in the livingroom and halls, the gorgeous walnut top on my used cabinet island, the matching gorgeous top that will soon be on the new media cabinet and the near full gut of the bathroom.) And we're still determined to get through remodeling our ugly duckling without taking out a loan or dipping into savings. Conventional wisdom says: Wait until the coffers are full again but that's so hard to do. First off, I'm a cheapskate. Even if the goose who laid the golden egg waddled up onto my deck and built a nest, I'm not sure I would willingly pay someone to mess up the walls I just paid to fix. Second, I'm not quite cheap enough. My new kitchen is starting to look pretty good but, gosh, it would look so much better if the microwave and coffee maker didn't take up so much room on that one counter. I'm willing to spend a little bit more to change that, especially since I'm going to have a piece of countertop leftover that should be just the right size. Still, it's nice to know that it's possible. Maybe when the coffers ARE full again I'll put a tile counter outside on my deck to shade the golden goose should she happen to wander by ;) Thanks for your help!

thank you for the help. i can't undo my cut but i did dip into rooting hormone. the cuttings are under a shoplight with one warm one cool flourescent light. now to figure out a way to stop the mites. anyone know if they can spread to other houseplants. from what i've heard it's just about impossible to kill them. one guy i met does tissue culture of plumeria in order to get clean stock.

Callous tissue is the first step to roots, so by cutting that off, you set yourself back several weeks.

It wasn't a good idea to add verm. and peat to the supersoil. Supersoil already contains some peat and by adding more along with verm. your mix may be retaining too much water and could rot the cutting.

What's done is done. Just don't water again, until you have at least 2 open leaves. You can mist it if you like, but no more water!

The lights you have are fine, but bottom heat from a propagation mat or heating pad really help with the rooting process.

I am still a fan of 70%perlite or pumice and 30%peat. It works like a charm. Later after it has a nice rootball and leaves, then repot it in a mix of 60% Supersoil and 40% Pumice.

Regarding spider mites, yes they can spread and they are difficult to get rid of when the plants are indoors. Air circulation helps and they hate being sprayed with water.

thanks for the info. shows how much i really know. I just thought that because it was so withered that I needed to cut and wait for newer callus tissue. Didn't expect any water uptake to happen through the former callus.
