My new garden helper!

My daughter, Eva Elizabeth was born January 16, 2007 at 3:35 a.m. She weighed 8 lbs. 4.5 oz. and was 20 3/4 in.

The hospital photographer did a great job and was creative with some roses. Take a look...(She is wearing a dress that I wore home from the hospital with rose buds on it)

Here is one taken yesterday, she will be 1 month tomorrow!

What a beautiful baby and such a beautiful name! Are you pronouncing Eva with a long E (like eeeeva) or with a long A sound (like ayva)? Either way, both pronunciations are beautiful! Congratulations.

I've also heard and used the tomato juice and Irish spring soap to bathe them in... it worked on my black dog.. but can you imagine what my pure white puppy would've looked like?? I don't think DH would like having a pink dog!! LOL We used a mixture of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide (the type used for cuts and stuff) and dish soap.... worked like a charm and brightened her coat. The only reason she still has the smell is because she got sprayed in the face and I couldn't wash around her eyes and mouth without making her sick so I was hoping it would wear off.. but every time she gets her muzzle wet the smell is still there. Going to wash her with the deoderizing doggy shampoo and make sure I wash her well this time. ttfn Cheryl.

I prefer large breeds of poultry, since they cannot fly high, are thus easier to fence in, and tend to be calmer in temperament. Chickens need enough room to prevent boredom. Mine have 1 1/4 acre, and they can be destructive if they get interested in an area. They can dig up trees, and they kick away mulch for fun! Delawares are very quiet, gentle and pretty. I got my new chicks because I really like the adult I bought at this year's Fair. Hens lay on average, 5 eggs a week, each. No rooster is needed. They start laying at 4-5 months and can go on for up to 8-10 years. Commercial layers are killed as soon as production eases up, but for a backyard flock, one egg less per week is not a big deal. I keep mine until they die, or I place them in another home, or something kills them. Chickens taste good and have no defenses, so it is up to owners to keep them safe. They will stay in a fenced-in yard, no problem, unless the fencing allows them to slip through. They need a *secure* coop to sleep in, with perches and nest boxes. No rooster is needed. Hens lay without male influence. I have only had one incidence of mites/lice. A puny Banty pullet moved right into my coop, snuggling under a Buff Orpington. She came from the neighbors, who have animals in appalling conditions. I took the stray to my vet, she was crawling with lice and mites.. We treated her, and dusted all the other birds, the coop and replaced all the shavings (beding material). I bleached the entire area. The hens were peeved at being dusted, but they are clean and have been parasite free ever since. I think having a few hens for fresh eggs is an option every homeowner should have. They are great for recycling (they eat everything leftover) and their droppings are terrific fertilizer. They are also very entertaining! Lisa

They look like the same helpers I have in my yard! I have two fawns that still have their spots that regularly visit. I went out and chased one away from the road last evening. I really enjoy my outdoor pets! Thanks for sharing the pics.

Thank you! She is named after my great-grandmother. Her name is pronounced Eeeva with a long e.

Congradulations on your beautiful new daughter!!!!

She was born on my husband's birthday. We have 4 children ages 21, 16, 4 & 3, 2 girls & 2 boys, and we have been soooo blessed with them.

I agree, ENJOY even the middle of the night times, because time goes by fast!!

As you can tell, I would love to have another baby, but DH has put his foot down so we will stop at 4.

Congrats on the new baby! Is she your first? Those cuddle times are the best in the whole world. I dont think there is anything better than a childs laughter. Makes the whole day better just hearing it!

Thank you all for your kind words. Yes, she is my first, it's such a joy to have her but makes gardening a challenge. I finally was able to finish pruning my roses the other day. I would like to plant a new rose in my yard in honor of Eva if I can find a space for one. Maybe a climber would fit along our fence, any suggestions?
