Would like some opinions...(desert roses)

I have two desert roses that are in unglazed terra cotta pots. The pots have a lot of white on the outsides. In the past, I have not thought much about repotting in October even though it is not the proper time. Now...... I'm confident everything will be fine, I just want to know what others would do. Where I put my DRs in winter they don't drop leaves, they generally keep growing, just ssllooooooowwwlllyy.

Personally, I don't know very much about desert roses (except that they are in the same family as plumerias) but if you would like a very good resource, you can call Cactus Girls Garden in Yorba Linda. They sell some amazing looking DR's at the fairgrounds out here and the guy I talked to has lifetime experience growing them and is more than willing to share it. Unfortunately, his name escapes me now, but their phone # is (714)777-7950.

Last year I had only one Desert Rose, now I have a few more. I just brought it inside, leaving it in the pot that it has been in. I put it in a window that gets sun pretty much all day long. It seemed happy enough, giving me flowers all through the winter months.

Marie, those all look great. I'm jealous you'll have so many blooms on several plants at once. Our Houston weather was weird even for South East Texas standards this year. Perhaps who ever is looking after your house while you are gone would be kind enough to take some pictures of your babies? I know it doesn't compare to seeing them in person but it's better than nothing. Kirk

Vintage Gardens and Heirloom both have many of the OOP Austins. Some of those are very nice. I also garden in hot, dry zone 9. Whatever you do, I suggest DO NOT BUY Geoff Hamilton, Mayor of Castorbridge or Glamis Castle. Graham Thomas, sometimes listed as AUSmas does very well in desert heat with adequate water. Winter irrigation is essential. Evelyn and Golden Celebration are also good in our climate, and have more reasonable water requirements. Swan, The Nun, Symphony, English Garden, and Dove all are good in hot climates; all are available from Heirloom. You might want to order now for fall delivery. Your plants will be bigger and you won't have to baby them in pots through the summer heat. I have also had good success with Charmain, Eglantyne, Mary Rose and sports and The Prince (in a shaded location). I did not like: The Pilgrim--no rebloom, Heritage--flowers last about half a day, Sceptered Isle--monstrous growth in every direction, Lilac Rose--wasn't lilac, Kathryn Moreley--boring, scant bloom on a too big plant. If you are willing to give lots of TLC, Radio Times can be fabulous, but can't be neglected. DA's roses are very climate specific. I spent a lot of money finding out that some just weren't suited to my climate.

I have my desert rose in a clay pot.. I do not water it until it is dry about an inch down. And cut back on water in winter. It is in a south window and gets lots of light in the winter. It goes out on my covered front facing south after all chance of frost is over. It loses some leaves in winter. I have had it for three or four years. I took a cutting alert it dry out on the end put in spot of regular miracle grow potting soil and it has started putting on leaves.. I would love to try planting from seeds.. My cutting even got water logged and started to turn mushy on the end and I cut it off jammed it back in soil and it started leafing out again. I think over watering is what kills most cactus roses.. I also fertilize with mirical grow and alter with blooms fertilizer in summer.

I am offering the following as information rather than rebuttal, so please accept it in the spirit it is meant. The only thing you have now is that they agreed to give an extension in text. The contract is all that matters. From what I read, you breached the contract going from a cash deal to a financed deal. A contract is (1) an offer and (2) acceptance for (3) an exchange of consideration (value) by (4) competent individuals that creates a (5) mutuality of obligation. In other words, a text message saying I will give you an extension if you pay my utility bills during that period is absolutely a written contract, it meets all 5 requirements. The catch is that real estate contracts must meet the statute of frauds requirement that they contain a legal signature. However, in the law a legal signature is more than simply a written signature, emails are considered a legal signature, so is letterhead containing your name. While I am not sure the courts have tackled text messages, it certainly isn't a huge leap to think it would count. Additionally, there is a partial performance exception to the written requirement. If I tell you that I will sell you my house if you do certain things, and those things have some (any) benefit to me, and I accept that benefit, then that typically nullifies the written and signature requirement. My acceptance of the benefit is acknowledgment of the contract's existence.

The white stuff on your pots may be mineral buildup...?

I am waiting for my first DR seeds to arrive so I'm no expert, but I have heard that each time you repot them, make the new soil level a little lower to promote good caudex growth.

This is my husbands favorite plant. To store for the winter you can do one of two things. Dig the plants up, wrap in dry newspapers, and store in the garage for the winter, I do this on the ones we have in our yard. For the ones my husband has in pots, we just drag the pots in the garage, do not water them the entire time they are in the garage, or they will rot. Then in the spring, we bring them out, when it starts to get sunny. He has 4 diffrent colors, the regular pink,, red and white, white, and a double pink. He loves desert roses, and brugmansia. I just repotted about 6 of my Adenium, keep them warm and watered lightly for the 1st few weeks after transplanting. You may very well notice some stems droop, and older leaves and flower buds fall off, but they will recover quickly.

The white stuff is probably mineral salts that are leaching out through the porous clay. It's pretty harmless but ugly and hard to remove.

All Adenium can be kept dormant during the winter months. A obesum don't always drop their leaves. Some other species will drop leaves no matter what you do. Still others only flower during the dormant period. More than likely you have an Adenium obesum, they are the most common. Pruning is best right before active growth in the spring, and will stimulate new growth and new flowers.
