anyone growing P. pudica?

Anyone here growing Plumeria Pudica? I couldn't resist buying one this weekend after seeing several nice specimens (mislabeled, of course) at the back of my local Lowe's garden center. I wanted to include a link to a mature tree at another web site, but I apparently this post is considered spam if I add the link.

For now I'm treating it just like any other plumeria since I don't have any info that says otherwise- so, well draining soil, limited watering, protection against freezes, etc. I'm going to enjoy it in a pot until it goes dormant and then put it in the ground early next spring. If anyone here is growing one I'd be interested to hear your experiences.

Unfortunately, the flowers are scentless. However, they are very abundant and should certainly satisfy all my desires for lots of flowers- for cutting, leis, or just enjoying. And what a stunning landscaping component, when compared against the traditional choices for a tree of this size and shape!

I have read bits and pieces about hybridization and crossing this with other plumeria species to introduce color and scent. It will be awesome if those efforts are fully successful, since color and scent are the two main reasons most people grow plumeria!

I bought one here in town just over the weekend. I have to guess since it's related to the plumeria it may be similar. Bush Gardens (the amusement park) has a garden center. I purchase a 4-5 foot one for $15.
For now I just plunged it in the ground assuming to take the plant out when it hits around 50 here.

Ha, that is sort of funny, I picked up mine over the weekend also. I didn't know Busch Gardens had a garden center. Is it right on the theme park property?

I saw something from someone in Clearwater a couple years ago who planted a small one, and it was already 6 feet tall in a year and a half later. Supposedly the grow fast to their maximum size.

I'm pretty excited about it, it is a unique plant and I don't recall seeing another one growing anywhere in the Tampa Bay area.

M27 has been too wussy for Southern California. They're cute and would work well in a big pot on a patio, but they're so tiny that a borer could girdle the trunk in a couple weeks, and if something hits it and breaks a branch off, it takes forever to heal and make another one. Lord help you if you have an irrigation failure, as the shallow roots will die quickly. Bud.9 is as small as I use now, but M7 is a lot easier to grow. Applenut

The plant in my photo was taken either last year or before. It has been divided and even the divisions throw keikis but they also bloom. Strange behavior. I have a few Twinkles and only this plant and its offspring do this. I find the oncids like to dry out quickly. I have good luck growing most of them in Aussie Gold which is free draining. In winter I put some sphag on the surface to slow down surface dryness. Sharry baby is a fast grower and, if happy, will quickly fill a pot. I never had keikis on my plants no matter how pot bound they were. They always have multiple spikes this time of the year. I give them full sun all summer and leave them out until the nights get cold. Try cutting back on fertilizer or stop it completely. I would wait until Spring to divide. If you aren't getting spikes now, you probably won't. Mine always bloomed around x-mas. What zone are you in? Mine all went to the auction table or trade. I cannot stand the smell. Idabean, I found this quote online when trying to figure out how to explain to you where to plant ANNUAL sunflowers: "Annual sunflowers ALWAYS point their blooms or faces toward the rising sun in the East. anyone growing p. parvifolia, rubromarginata, dulcis in zone 6?

I'm growing quite a few Phyllostachys species in western NY zone 6a. Thes guys have been in the ground for about 5-6 years and are forming nice groves from 8 to 12 foot tall and 1/2 to 3/4" diameter canes: P. rubromarginata P. atrovaginata P. aureosulcata 'spectabilis' P. nuda P. nigra 'henon' The following were planted only a year ago and are just getting established: P. decora P. dulcis P. parvifolia P. bissetii These two are still potted and will be planted in the ground this upcoming spring: P. kwangsiensis P. propinqua 'Beijing' I'm also growing these other 'boo species: Arundinaria gigantea Fargesia muriellae Fargesia 'scabrida' So far the rubro has been the fastest to size up and spread for me; it also produces the most canes. The spectabilis is starting to catch up to the rubro in size and spread. Out of my established plants, the nuda and henon seem to suffer the most winter damage/die-back. Last winter was great, I had little to no winter damage at all resulting in beautiful bamboos this summer!

I bought one this spring and am really happy with it! I have mine in the ground and plan on digging it up in about a week or 2 before the 40s hit. It has doubled in size and has 3 inflos on it. Its a beautiful plumeria and is perfect except the blooms have no scent!! They dont seem to really mind cooler weather and have thrived in a full sun spot in my yard. Its also an evergreen plumeria. A few of my plumerias are developing some yellow leaves with the shorter days and cooler weather, but this one has stayed a nice green!
Heres a pic of it this spring. It had no leaves and almost died which is why I put it in the ground.

And heres from about 2 days ago of the newest blooms and with the old inflo still blooming as well.

It is definitely a unique plant and I really do like the look of it as well as its ability to bloom very well!

Hey that's a nice looking tree there. Inside the park there is a garden shop. It's got tons of stuff and prices are awesome. I've been shopping there most of the summer we also found a Helicona taller than me (5'4) $15 can't beat the prices.

The fence can be deceiving but it's actually a 4 foot fence.

well, looking at the blossoms it certainly easy to see that Mandevilla is related to plumeria, these flowers look identical to Mandevilla blossoms!

Hmm, I never really compared a mandevilla blossom to a plumerias, but I can definitely see a relationship! Plus Im pretty sure they both seep out a white sap when damaged (I know plumerias do!).
I potted up my in ground plumeria pudica today and unfortunately it lost lots of roots in the process. Hopefully some plant food and warm sunny days in the forecast will make it happy again. Next summer Im either going to keep it in a pot or sink it in the ground with a pot. They do respond very well to growing in the ground though!
