Not with a SB, then again I've not had much success growing SB period! Have had a couple other oncids produce new growths in this manner. Then I have a Psychopsis that grows/blooms crazily. It should produce spikes from beside the bulb like the SB & other oncids do, but this guy has one growing that way, but two other spikes are growing from the apex of the bulb. It also has two bulbs that are producing new psbs from the apex. As long as it stays healthy & blooms I'm just enjoying it and watching with great interest.

This is a Twinkle with a keiki which eventually sent up a spike and flowered still attached. This particular Twinkle often sends up keikis and flower spikes.

jane - thank you for your picture! my camera chips are misplaced, so glad to see yours! is the fat guy in the front-center leaning leftwards, sharing the same sheath as the one immediately behind?
or is the narrow one behind popping out of the same sheath as the one in the 2nd row middle? so are they called keikis when they share a single sheath with another p.bulb??

And Richardol - that is what I was wondering too - how often does one divide? this one is actually half of a previous division, done about 2-1/2 years ago, but already seems to have about 10+ pbs. However it hasn't bloomed since the division (the other half is beginning to grow a spike), but growing bulbs like crazy. It is sitting in a glazed ceramic pot with a single hole in the bottom, so someone said it sound like too much watering/mositure retention - could that be ???

Glazed pots are a watering management challenge, but you are seeming to be doing ok. The blooming issue is more likely light. More light.

Anything above 3 connected pseudobulbs in a division should bloom the next cycle. Between the length of time since it was divided and the pseudobulb count, I would suggest dividing. Getting the point where the new growth is coming from to the outside of the plant will help it grow better.

If you use a plastic pot with slits watering will be easier to manage. You can set it in the "party dress" pot for display when it blooms.

I think you're right about dividing - and getting the plants to be growing outward rather than inward, as it would get more room to bulk up. Though it being mid-October, there's the stress of dealing with division and winter; perhaps shd wait till mid Feb/March? of course that means there's the stress of staying crowded in for another 5 mths or so. Hard to say which is worse.
And as for the plastic pot with slits - I thought they were for the more fleshy rooted/leaved ones like catts and phals...I wondered, what with Oncidiums being thin rooted, and my watering habits (weekly, or even biweekly during winter..), would the plastic pots dry out too fast?

The plant in my photo was taken either last year or before. It has been divided and even the divisions throw keikis but they also bloom. Strange behavior. I have a few Twinkles and only this plant and its offspring do this.

I find the oncids like to dry out quickly. I have good luck growing most of them in Aussie Gold which is free draining. In winter I put some sphag on the surface to slow down surface dryness. Sharry baby is a fast grower and, if happy, will quickly fill a pot. I never had keikis on my plants no matter how pot bound they were. They always have multiple spikes this time of the year. I give them full sun all summer and leave them out until the nights get cold.

Try cutting back on fertilizer or stop it completely. I would wait until Spring to divide. If you aren't getting spikes now, you probably won't. Mine always bloomed around x-mas. What zone are you in?

Mine all went to the auction table or trade. I cannot stand the smell. Many people love them, I get queasy just remembering.

I'm in the DC/MD area - zone 7-8; yes I think I'll wait till spring to divide and hold off fertilizer which I was slowing down on anyway..
Mine has only a mild fragrance, and which I actually quite like (and no one else seems to notice even!)

If the pot is very crowded and you don't want to repot at this time, consider "moving up". Without disturbing the plant, move it into a slightly larger pot and tuck some fresh medium around it. Then in the spring you can do the big job. In the meantime the plant won't be suffering from overcrowding.
