New growth is white/yellow--why?

I have had a plumeria for several years in a pot. It has grown and flowered beautifully. Recently, I noticed that the new growth is a whitish/yellow color instead of the normal green color. What is going on? Thanks.

Are you referring to the leaves, or the actual growth tip? Post a pic, if you can.

We get this in the north most springs on some roses. It is likely due to the soil not being warmed up enough for the rose to take in certain nutrients as mentioned above. I would not worry about adding iron/calcium, etc.--wait and see if the problem corrects itself after it warms up more. Another possibility could be a nonviable cane. One that is winter-damaged that you missed when pruning, or looked ok after the winter but really is damaged and is not able to transport nutrients to those leaves. This would pertain if it is only the leaves coming from one certain cane.

I wouldn't worry too much about the leaf. The first few leaves on all of my bananas coming out of the winter funk are smaller and not always the right color. Your next leaf will be better, and so on, and so on. The most important thing is that it's got a leaf. Steve

Severnside, I'm sorry to disturb your 'Scooter' happines, but your pics don't show the right one or it is suffering because of a to moisty soil. Your specimen doesn't show the right needle colour and for sure it's new growth shouldn't be creamy. Of all Abies species the Abies concolor is the most difficult one to grow because of our sea climate which contains to much moist in the air and this in a combination with a moisty soil will make them sick because of a fungus... I am not an expert, but like conifers though. Probably we should accept lower standards for white pines and agree with any development. My 80ft white pines in my backyard are all messy, and did not develop straight and beautiful as they aged. Anytime too much snow, wet snow or an ice storm and branches break. All my white pines have stubs of branches, the tallest one actually converted half of his upper branches into stubs last winter, hopefully will fill in. Additionally they have forked trunks, an arborists said that insects cause these forks when trees are young. I had woodpeckers create holes to trap insects with the resulting resin, which led a top break off from a smaller white pine.

It is the tips, not leaves, although the spines of the new leaves from the whitish/yellowish tip are also that color, while the leaf is green. Sorry, I don't have a digital camera.

Linda... I am not one of the plumeria experts, but my first thought, is that a plant that has been in the same pot for a few years is going to experience stress. No matter what the problem is, I would be looking at getting your plant in a larger pot. Where do you live? I am in South Florida, zone 10, and wouldn't hesitate to transplant now. If I were in New York, I'd let it go dormant and transplant in the spring. I also wonder what size pot it is in, and what your watering/fertilizing routine is.

Thanks Bob, but I repotted it last year. It is 68 inches tall at the tallest point. It is in a 20in diameter pot. I live in St. Louis, MO, and I keep it outside in summer and bring it in when temperature dip into the 40's. I have always had good success, and in fact, it never went dormant and bloomed all winter, spring and summer. I haven't been fertilizing regularly. Do you have a recommendation for fertilizer and where I can buy it?

Linda... the general wisdom is to use a water soluble, bloom booster. Middle number over 50. Of course, there is other wisdom, that you may be able to find in a recent post, by doing a search, within this forum. It seems that many of the regulars haven't been coming around to this forum recently, probably because their plants are coming in for the season. Too bad, because most could give better advise than me! Check out this link, though. This is where I started out when I got caught by the Plumeria Bug.
