Surprised: new growth on the leader I chopped off (white pine)

I bought a small white pine last year in the fall. It had a mangy looking leader but the rest of it looked very good. I cut off the leader (about 4 inches at most) and wondered what would happen. It was a pretty young plant and I got it on sale from a nursery. This spring I transplanted it farther away from the house. I'm pleased to say that the same leader grew luxuriant new needles and the rest of the plant is LUSH. I'm very happy as I thought the best I could hope for would have been two or more new leaders (from side branches).

MY question is: is there any way to keep it lush as it gets older? Every white pine I see around my area looks mangy and has had all its lower braches cut off.

Thanks.
