New to High-Altitude

I have recently moved from coastal South Carolina where you could even plant a jelly bean and expect something extraordinary to sprout. I love flowers, color, smell and miss the peace I found in working with my plants. Most of the things I grew I called "heirloom" plants because they came from gardens of family, good friends, etc.

Anyway, I am interested in trying my thumb (as-it-were) at some gardening here in Dillon, CO.

Can anyone please give me ideas on the easier-to-cultivate flowering plants? In the past I have sworn by amending the soil with mushroom compost - is that even an option here? I have read using wood ash is beneficial up here.

Thanks so much! Looking forward to hearing lots of great ideas!
