Help for my 'Psycho' cutting

Hi Bill, I need your advice concerning the 'Psycho' cutting you gave me at the end of April. I had planted it in a 1 gallon pot and put in on the south side of our house. Everything had been going well (young leaves and even some flowers) until we got that crazy heatwave Mo.- Wed. Last night I noticed that about 2 inches of tissue towards the end of one of its three 'arms' had collapsed. Needless to say, I moved it to a cooler, more shaded location right away. Is there a chance that the tissue will recover? Or do I have to cut back (and if so, how far) that branch? I am just heartbroken! Do you have any advice for me?

I would support it with a popsicle stick and mist and water. If it does not have good leaves, remove the inflo. It may have few roots to support the water needs. If leaves are many, then water more frequently. Don't worry, if it fails I can easily replace it for you. Bill

Hello Iso,

I hope that your "Psycho" will pull through...

We all have our favorite trees/cuttings that friends give to us and it does break your heart when something happens to them sepecially!

You are fortunate to live close to Bill .

hopefully it will respond to the change in temps and come back strong for you!!!

I hope all is well with you and your mom.

Wishing i could visit the west coast and see all of the beauties in full bloom ....

This has been the best year for me as far as blooms...so i'm veryy happy and thankful for many things!!! : )

Thanks akaMaineGrower for the comment and suggestions. I'm going out in a little bit to check on the life of the branches, but I wanted to run a comment past you that the rep from my County Extension service told me. Like you, I would believe that lack of light would cause issues like this, but apparently, getting sun can be the issue. She sent me part of an article by someone named Walter Reeves which stated that lichen usually colonizes on plants who are already sick in some way. From this ailment, they tend to thin out, thus allowing sun on branches that then encourage the lichen, primarily the algae portion of what I call the "ugly sandwich". Once the algae takes hold, the fungus isn't usually far behind. But again, these plants are more than a decade old, not in high moisture areas, and most are super full. They don't have "holes" in growth that would explain Mr. Reeves' comment. Ok, now I'm off to go check on the branches to see what life they have left in them! Watch, knowing my luck with this Psycho Lichen, they'll be healthy branches! :) Thanks again! Elizabeth

Hi ANdrew, So nice to hear you are having good vibes from your Plumeria!! Also.. To have good feelings coming back to your leg!! WHOO HOO! It will continue to gain feeling, im sure of that!!! Good things happen to good people !!! I truly believe that.. Right Peg? ;-) Andrew... I heard the message and you need to relax and take it easy.. No need to try and push yourself. You only have one body and you need all of your energy focused on healing right now. The inflos will continue to grow and then they will shower you with another gift later.. ;-) Healing is needed now.. No trips down to the basement either. Deal? I know Jose will help, but you need to take this time to rest. The snow will be falling in your area this weekend, hopefully not like in Boston. Poor Mike. They are calling for 2 feet in his area. OMG!! We would be on serious lockdown for a month if we had snow like that. Here is a pic of my palms from last weekend.. This was the largest snowfall this year. I think we had 2 inches and that is pushing it!!! Have a wonderful night and give your Psycho an extra smile knowing that the mother tree is ready to lose her remaining blooms soon. Hi Mike, This variety is nothing short of miraculous no matter how you look at it. It's a robust tree that in my experience produces really thick tips, huge inflos with tons of flowers, and the inflos just continue to produce flower after flower, but I don't need to report that as I am sure Bill has all ready! Hi Elucas, I hope your right! I am a firm believer that raw eggs help to root plumeria cuttings, but I still continue to use them even after the cutting has rooted. As I mentioned above, I have had this cutting for 3 years now, and I have given it 2 raw eggs every spring, and by fall, the eggs are gone! I know it is helping my tree(s) because when it comes time to repot, the roots are super thick, and the root ball itself is considerably larger. I need to get my spray bottle ready for the Spray in Grow. I should just buy as sprayer this year and make it easier on me. Thanks Plumiegirl. Andrew

Hi Kandhi!! We also have to remember that we grow in containers which might play a part as well as having a long dormant period! We are lucky to have the blooms we have when our trees are inside for 6 months of the year. So my hats off to you for having and seeing the results from your gorgeous trees!! If we had our trees planted In The ground like some other lucky people, you would probably see blooms every year after it matured!! But I think since we have a few limitations, it might play a big part in the reduction of blooms. I still have varieties that have never bloomed and also others that have bloomed before and have taken a break.. i have had more success with plunging my containers which makes the root system feel like it's planted in the ground more so than just a raised container sitting on the deck.. Plunging makes the roots more active and makes the trees grow more vigorously ... ;-) if you want to see a picture of my planters that I plunged my trees, I'll take a picture for you later this evening!! We are so lucky to be here in North County, because we got our electricity back some time last night. I guess it'll take quite a few more hours before the rest of San Diego is up and running again. Amazing how easy it is to have all of San Diego county, parts of Arizona, northern Mexico, and southern Orange County without electrcity - how fragile our modern society is...

Hi Laura, you and I must have written our messages at about the same time. Thanks for your kind words. My mom is doing alright, and I'll actually go back over in December for her 90th birthday. (If I can ever get a flight put together using my frequent flier miles... It' s a busy time of year).
