Remember this is a tree and it feels limited by the space in your pot. Personally, I would repot it in a larger pot now as long as you have some decent (warm) weather for a few weeks. If not, you could let it go dormant and repot in the spring.

Pruning the plant, to me, is a short term fix, as the plant will continue to try to spread its roots even with some pruning.

I would not root prune the plant, but others have.

So, for me, repotting is the best choice.

bstew-Mike is correct in his advice and it is your choice of how to handle what sounds like a very happy plumie. I would offer this for next year. If you have some where to plunge your pot in a garden area, the roots will find their way out of the drainage holes and be quite happy in the soil where the temperature fluctuation are more stable. Then you can just pull the pot up at the end of the season for storage.

I agree with Karen. Let the roots grow! The plant will do much better with its roots in 'real' soil. Then in the Fall you can just cut them off before bringing the plant indoors.

I have read advice in this column that the roots growing out of the drainage holes at the bottom of pots buried in the ground can create significant problems in the fall when the plants need to be brought indoors. The bottom roots will reportedly "anchor" the pot and make removing it without trauma, difficult or just plain difficult. If I recall, roots growing out holes in the side of pot are easier to cut without having to excavate the entire pot.

Well, yes it does make moving the plant more difficult to be sure! But you can use a sharp-shooter spade or sharp trowel (or knife) to sever the roots next to the pot. I think in the long run, the plumeria I've allowed to send out roots have done, on average, better than those that are sitting on the deck confined to the pot. Maybe it has something to do with keeping the roots cooler as well. We have very warm summers. Anyway, that's just my observation in my climate. Look at the enormous leaves on this plant, which was allowed to root in the soil. A week or so later, this plant was smothered in flowers from three inflos. Full disclosure, the pot was in the shade of the AC unit, so maybe that had something to do with it?

My one and only plumie hasn't developed real leaves, just little embrionic claws. I envy those beautiful rich leaves! I don't know what I am doing wrong.

If the leaves have not developed, it's usually an issue with the roots. Are you trying to root a cutting? Chances are the roots have not formed yet, or it could even be that the stem is rotting below the soil line. If the stem is solid, I'd water very minimally until the leaves start to grow. It might need more heat too.
