Homemade ROASTER w/pics

These are pics of the roaster I built today with the help of my friend from New Mexico. He was trading me his labor for some roasted green chiles. The pics do not show it, but it has an electric rotisserie motor attached to it so there is no manual interaction needed. I will post a video of its maiden coyage soon. If anyone wants to know how I built it, let me know. I will also be posting a how-to on my blog sometime in the next few days. It was made for under $25. A few things I used I had laying around the garage(like the rotisserie motor, but it was actually in my wife's trunk...funny story). Let me know what you think!

I've been wanting to make my own chili roaster for years, just never got around to it.

You might want to be careful cooking on or near galvanized metal. It puts off toxic fumes or something when heated, as I recall.

I'm not sure if that's galvanized wire there in Generation 2 (above), but the chicken wire cage in Generation 1 (with the rims) might have been a problem.

Other than that, I think you're on to something here. I'd like to see it in action, especially how you attached the rotisserie.

Maid, oh yeah, our family lives compare to soaps..lol..never know what to expect the next day.. Here's a pic of my green and variegated Sweetheart before the fall. As you can see it had 3 or 4 stems. For some reason, the variegated doesn't show up on pics. Here's a reverse Hoya Sweetheart.. Oh, found this pic while browsing Flickr..This is my H. Sweetheart when young, before adding the variegated hoya..it was so compact..Wonder if I should cut back, too? lol..I should send one long strand to you, Maid, you can root cuttings for me..lol..I just noticed, it even had a little cluster of buds..What to do? Doodlepunk...you asked some good questions..I hope someone replies..I'd like to know, too..especially the part about lying the cutting horizontally to root. Golden Ca. Very cute Hoya..it looks much better on the trellis..I agree growing trailers on trellis looks better/neater, and easier to work with, but with Kerri, at least as I've discovered, once a stem is 'x' long, it's difficult training it on a trellis..stems and foliage are thick..I have the same problem with a Stephonotis. I made a home-made trellis, ran the Steph growth in circular motion. Because the leaves are thick, 1. the plant lifts the trellis out of soil 2. a stray sidegrowth grew in and for some reason untangles itself from the trellis, knocking it down. Perhaps a heavier trellis is needed for thicker leaf vines??? And should be done when young. Toni

I agree with Mari's suggestion to go high and wide. Probably my biggest mistake was getting skimpy hardware. I was trying to be minimalist and it was also my first effort at WTs and I whined here for lots of help at the time. I will say I like the sheerness and the light coming through my linen panels. That is a north western exposure and I need the light and lightness. It is also a casual room, so the relative sheerness is appropriate IMO. Your room feels more formal to me, so lined panels would have a richer look...

Oh, catmom, you have just brought back some great memories!! When I was a young girl, perhaps once or twice a year my grandma and her niece would come to our house to make pierogies. My mom and I would round out the foursome for this process. I was always given some easy job, like mix the filling, but I never got to work with the dough. They were always so wonderful to eat for supper those evenings. Fast forward about 15 years, and I am a new bride living across the continent from my family. I want to treat my husband to a special dinner, something he has never tried but I am sure he will love. I attempt to prepare pierogies myself, and the whole effort was a failure. I made them too big, the dough was tearing in the water, I had filling floating...I threw everything out and cried over my disaster. Can't quite remember what we did have for dinner, but I was sooo looking forward to the taste treat I had remembered. I never tried to make them again. Thanks to your luscious pictures, I will do so soon. After all, my cooking talents have undoubtedly improved in 25 years. Thank you, catmom!!

SHADES - I can't see how the leaf w/come off when you glue the tile down - most of the time I use mortar, and it's VERY tough adhesive. SHELLY - you didn't mention the brand of liquid leaf you used????? BAMA - As NANA tells us - I suppose anything is possible w/this clear glass. Thanks, NANA, for giving us more ideas. I'm not familiar w/the foil tape, NANA. In what section of the hardware store is this found, and what's it's purpose? WACKY - what brand of liquid leaf do you use? I just hate oil-based paints, but at yours and SHELLY's suggestion I'm gonna give it a try. CALAM - I put the leaf on the textured side, cuz the flat side is easier to score. BTW - forgot to tell y'all the rigid piece was iridized, and I bought iridized at HobLob yesterday. I'm going to cut a sheet into four pieces so it'll be easier to work with on the next try. In searching for some gift wrap, I found some brilliant red foil w/silver on the opposite side. Why do these ideas always come when I'm preparing AGAIN for weekend company. Gotta clean house today!!!

Looks pretty slick & it being less than $25 to make is awesome. =) Let us know how it works. I need to do something like this. I can't continue to spend 2 hours cleaning my charcoal grill every time I want to roast peppers. Pain in the butt!

Yeah, the rims/chicken wire was kinda just a prototype. Just got bored one day and tried it out. I never cooked in it though. It needed a lot of work before using it to roast. As far as attaching the rotesserie, it was fairly simple. The threaded rod through the middle is what attaches to the motor. I just used a dremel to cut the end to a square shape like the motor takes. I can post some closeup pics on here tomorrow or something. Thanks for all the comments. I will also try to get the video from last night up on the web so you can see it in action. It was dark so the video was not great, but you can get the idea!

OK, I have attached some closeup pics and some videos of the roaster in action. There are a few kinks to iron out, as you will see in the last video, but I am very happy with the way it turned out!

burn baby burn....oops, NOT the roaster. but at least you guys were having fun. i've been watching for a few days and wondered what you were going to use as fire.....well fire it is i see. i bet those peppers were yummy. keep us posted how it goes. i'm keeping my eyes out for a rotisserie motor and metal stand.....good job PG

I thought about using a burner from a gas grill, but that will not be until I build a metal stand out of angle iron. That way, I will not have to take the time to build an actual fire. The one nice thing about building a real fire is that you can use what wood you want. For instance, I like to roast my peppers with a bit of apple wood burning alonf with the rest of the wood. Gives the peppers a nice flavor.

Nice! You're always full of good suggestions...lol. That roaster would be fun to watch whilst drinking a cold Bud Light. =) I think i'm gonna smoke some Habs this weekend...and drink beer, of course.
