Two stems, one success...still have hope for 2nd

Hi All--

I just got into plumeria because my wife loves them. We have two stems we've tried to root-- and even while they were trying to root, they bloomed!

Anyway, both looked shriveled but one finally plumped up one day and the other, after months, is still shriveled but growing leaves. I took the cutting out of the cactus mix it was in and cut the bottom off as the cambium (I think I'm using the right word) layer looked dead and brown. I cut the stem about an inch off the bottom and found all green layers. I put rooting hormone on the bottom and placed it in a clear plastic cylinder (so i can see the roots) with the bottom filled up with just perlite (I've had a ton of success rooting all sorts of plants using this method). Its gone into a spot in the house that gets loads of sun and I placed a black stone under it (gains some great heat during the day and lasts through the night).

I really hope this works because it is the cutting my wife likes most... it too bloomed a few weeks ago despite the lack of roots.

Any suggestions beyond what I've told you? Thanks

Welcome to the plumeria board.. Sounds like you have rooting under control. I have never rooted like that, sounds interesting. someone will come in and give you suggestions.

I think that blooming can be very stressful, for a plumeria with no roots. I had one (Confetti) that bloomed with very few roots, this past spring. The first few flowers were normal size, then the rest started opening much smaller. I felt that it was working too hard, so I cut the inflo off. I guess the flowering takes more energy then the plant can provide. I've heard that some will die, after that first rootless flowering.

Anyway... it does sound like you have taken good, sound steps to get the roots started. Heat at the roots is key. Just give it one watering at potting time, and don't give in to the temptation to water it again until it has put out a few full leaves. If it starts to get cold by that window, you may need to get a heat mat.

I have the feeling that you cut off the bloom possibilities when you cut it down last fall. The blooms on the native wisteria I have come from the places where there were leaves last year (I hope that makes sense), so if you cut off almost all of the branches/growth with leaves, there will be no blooms. Mine does throw out blooms a couple more times over the summer; not as huge a display as in the spring, but still, blooms are blooms. I'm sorry that you had to cut it down to save it, but it will make it up to you next year.

Proudgm, you can save any pics to there, if it's in PB already then there is a link that says "copy to my album" and it will put it there. As far as other sites, I know there is a way to upload them to PB from your album, I think you would just put the web address in it, I've never done it before. Also as Tracy pointed out above: Vic, one thing I would like to add about setting up your own photobucket account is that you can create your own folders for it too. I have several different sub albums in my account for family pics, garden shots, then sub albums for each of my individual gardens, clematis, lilies, daylilies and then keep a separate album for all web art I find that I want to use again or edit/personalize. I like keeping them separated so if I do a search I can find what I'm looking for pretty quickly. It is a pretty neat site and they just recently expanded some of their editing tools so you can add comments and funny designs to the pictures too. I've started part 3 so we don't have to wear our mouses out scrolling the page : )

Dormers are essentially required for attic (in the roof) square footage. I am not a building code expert but I am pretty sure that bedrooms require windows, assuming you want bedrooms on more than either end of the house they require dormers. As to your first drawing, houses similar to that (I forget the style) can be very striking and are very nice. I am not sure that they are cheaper to build than just going straight up, especially in Minnesota wher the snow load on the second roof is going to have to get transfered down to the foundation. If your plan has walls that will carry that load then it might be great, but that would essentially eliminate an open floorplan. I would think that the additional bracing required to have an open floorplan, modifications to the roof (essentially turning one roof into three), and the additional complexity of the plan would significantly eat into the cost savings that were the whole reason for the lesser square footage. Looking at the floorplan, I am assuming Lauren doesn't mean adding square footage over the garage roof, rather, building a second floor on most of the first floor (all that is not covered by the garage roof) and putting some additional one floor only square footage under the roof that also covers the garage. I think that would be fine, especially, if you can get the garage entrance turned sideways.

Bob what sort of heat mat? Are we talking a heating pad that one might use for an achy back, or is there something specific to plants?

Hi Ryan,
Remember to let the cutting callous for at least a week after you cut it. Planting a newly cut plumeria increases chance of rotting.
And there are "seedling mats" for plants. Without a thermostat they keep the root zone about 10 degrees above the ambient room temp. You can find them at garden supply sites and Ebay. A small one is about $20-25.
