Michigan Bulb, Spring Hill Nursery & Brecks

I have received a do not order from us letter from Michigan Bulb, which incudes Breck and SpringHill Nursery. They say that too may reships or credits have occurred. The majority of credits were do to collections, that I only said one or two did not bloom, but they have to credit the entire thing. This is not my fault, they should be able to just ship me the plants that died. Also they sent me the wrong color of plants, again not my issue but they have their nerve to tell me I can't do business with them, but keep sending me their catalogs. I guess they really do not guarantee anything!!

Spring hill will not post a review I left. I gave the roses I bought high marks for awesome flowering but also indicated that that I had to treat these disease resistant roses for black spot last year. What's the point of reviews if they're only going to post the positive ones?

They have so many bad reviews and have had a troublesome reputation for so many years that one has to ask why anyone would deal with them in the first place? Just compost their catalogs and consider yourself lucky not to have gotten burned by dealing with them.

I ordered from Nrecks only once several years ago and I will never order from them again. Most of the bulbs never bloomed and those that did were wimpy at best. Every spring They come up but never bloom. I leave them because they are at least green but I think I will be removing them this spring. I can get better plants at a yard sale.

I ordered 2 Musa Basjoo about 3 months ago; they don't ship until spring, this was fine. I ordered so early for a reason- these were a very important part of the design and harder to get this plant in the busy season. It is now April and I received the order of the wrong plants, still ok...emailed customer service and they sent me another confirmation with tracking # and will send the correct plants. I was happy that it was easily resolved, so I placed another order with them. 3 days later I receive an email that "I" cancelled my order. So now I have to call them to find out what's going on. This company outsources thier customer service that cancelled my order (after) they already gave me a confirmation that they would replace and correct -saying sorry, sorry and more blah blah blah sorries but thats now out of stock. Super annoying to repeat the order number 3 times and explain the issue with them, was transferred to a "supervisor" and again repeated the order number 3 more times, after explain now several times what the problem is; after that (hes filling out some check list) asks me the reason for my cancellation- ugggh, seriously? I dont order from companies that I cant rely on to make things right, its just not worth wasting so much of my time with thier incompetence and lack of commitment. My confirmation of my order and the payment given 3 months ago was a waste. Now its too late to get the most important and expected items that I waited 3 months for, and all I got was some careless response. I don't want to write emails, talk on the phone and make sure I got money back. I want them to do their job. There are plenty of companies that will do what they have to do to honor their commitments, this company is not one of them and I will never order from them again and have cancelled all my outstanding orders. Ok, so, unfortunately I didn't come here before ordering from Michigan Bulb. I ordered 3 Pampas grasses from them the Friday before Labor Day. I ordered a dwarf banana plant from Spring Hill Nursay before (I think Spring Hill is from the same conglomerate as Michigan Bulb) and that experience was fine. I knew that I was signing up for very small plants, but with grasses I figured they grow fast and would be only a couple of years before they reach good height. So, after my order the website said that the grasses would ship late September. Then, I checked the order again and the shipping date was early October 8th, then October 11th and today it is October 20th before they are even to ship. I really don't think I will ever get them. I will be more diligant to check your recomendations in the future. I feel stupid that I didn't before placing my order, but at least I have learned. I think I will check out Bluestone. Lots of great feedback from you all on them. Thanks, Tim

I've actually had better luck with the clearance sale plants than with items received in the mail from some nurseries--perhaps because I can pick the plant. It really is hit or miss, though; if you want a particular plant, you may be disappointed. They don't have everything that is in their catalogs, but they seem to have things & varieties not in their catalogs also. Overall I'd say that I've had about an 85% success rate, losses mostly because the bareroots I've tended to lose by not potting them promptly, and a few items I didn't realize weren't really hardy here (like the verbena I just brought home!). The only thing I've tried twice with no success are the poppies. At $.99 to $1.49 for anywhere from a single perennial to a bag of 6 or 8 perennials, it has been worth the loss rate to me--I still come out ahead. Never gotten a diseased specimen either. Some are potbound--but they seem to do alright. Last Friday they had gotten in a lot of bareroot stock--lots of different varieties of blackberry in particular,other berries, also apple, plum, pear, persimmon, pecan, walnut, roses, other trees, rhubarb, strawberries. They all looked good & were $4-$10.. And also bulk crates of different lilies and such. I resisted, with great difficulty, the dwarf honeycrisp apple --just don't know where I'd put it. After I got home I realised I could try espalier training it against the fence, but still not sure if the antique apples about 2 blocks away could pollinate it (think I'll ask this in the fruit forum). It will likely be gone next time anyway. Many of the perennials and shrubs that I saw last visit were gone, but some new ones in. They had all vegetable seeds for $.50. I got a lovely variegated leaf dogwood "golden Shadows"; but the Ninebark "coppertina" that I saw last time and decided that I wanted was gone. (I should know well enough to get something when I see it). Also got a clethra, sedum, clematis, several other nice garden flowers.

Thank you all very much for your experiences and advice. Another 3 hours later and after researching several shady plants, prices, soils, flowering times, color, etc., I've concluded to either buy plants locally (even though may be more expensive) or only on line if its is a deal I can't refuse by a reputable vendor. I found out the hard way Brecks, Michigan Bulb, Spring Hill and Rockwood Gardens are all the same Company all with about 50% positive and 50% negative. Dave's Garden does have a "Top 30 List" and I looked through about 20 of them but for me anyway, they were too expensive (Bluestone is on the list). Part of the reason I don't want to spend a lot of money (besides being cheap) is that so far I haven't had great success. It's OK to kill off seeds since they're relatively inexpensive but another to kill a plant for which I paid $10.00. The plant swaps are a great idea. I did go to one this Spring and also the Sisters' sale. I'll keep my eyes open for fall swaps in my area. Also, I didn't realize the Phlox Paniculata could be spread easily - I was looking at buying 12 plants! Thanks so much again to all of you. You have not only saved me a lot of money and frustration but saved me even more time on the web! I've learned a lot from this experience and appreciate you taking the time to help me out.

Try some bulb fertilizer, unless your climate is unsuitable or they are being reduced by pest infestation your bulbs may just need to get some more mineral nutrients so they can size up and bloom. Especially when they are large-flowered garden varieties (rather than wild species forms) bulbs often need good fertility to bloom and multiply.

It seems Michigan Bulb, Spring Hill Nursery & Brecks = Moe, Larry & Curly.

This is an old thread, but...I ordered from Spring Hill last year, before I knew that this website and Garden Watch Dog existed. I actually thought they were fine...but that was also my first (and to this point, only) time ordering plants through the mail. A couple of things I ordered were missing, but I called and told them the day I received my shipment, and they sent the missing plants right out. Everything looked healthy and did just fine last summer...I ordered a passion flower vine from them and was astounded at how quickly it grew and how healthy it was. Maybe I just got lucky!

I have ordered tulips, daffodils, peonies and iris from Breck's, and never been disappointed. My peonies are four years old this spring, and they are already HUGE and loaded with buds, this after an awful winter in northern NJ The reblooming iris are beginning to bud now, and my daffodils have spread like crazy. the tulips have pretty much petered out after about 7 years, but they aren't really perennials. I just ordered Rembrandt tulips from Michigan bulb at my sister's recommendation--she says she has never had a bad plant from them.

Michigan bulb would not post my review either! Their Itoh peony was not a survivor! It just died! I was trying to post the review twice, but it did not get posted!

I would say that the plants from Michigan bulb company has plants that have 50% chance of surviving!
