portulaca and ice plants problems
Comments (8)We have the deer herd also,Cameron , supplemented this year by an explosion in the cottontail population. Could be because the fox families have moved and the barred owls have been run off by the great horned variety that like a larger territory for just one breeding pair. At any rate, I have lots of beds of ice plant and it is fine. It's the purslane that got decimated repeatedly until I just carved up some Irish Spring soap and spread it around. In prepared beds with loosened soil the fawns would grab hold and just pull the plants out of the ground. A couple of nibbles and they'd walk away. Constantly replanting these same plants. But the soap chips really helped and Irish Spring is really scented..don't store it where you have food in cartons or the scent will get in that stuff too....See MoreHybrid Purslanes, Portulaca oleracea
Comments (5)This stuff is pretty reliable as far as hardiness, but doesn't like cold AND wet (either is OK). If you are 9A, it may not be as relaible through the winter, but it either looks great or dies back to the root. It will take alot of abuse, but start new plants as soon as you can to insure it survives. (This is easy, just cover some of the branches with soil, and they will root at the nodes [intersections with leaves.] As a 'short lived perennial', it may develop a woody central stalk which produces fewer and fewer branches with age...thus keeping new starts going will insure longer life of the 'family'. When the center dies back (eventually) you will still have some going. WHEN, exactly, may be impossible to say, it depends on the environment....See MoreCracked Granite. They say normal. I say BS! Comments (41)Send a picture of the repair-while some cracks can be repaired to the point they become invisible the crack in your top was just too large imo to make disappear. It isnt your fault the granite cracked. While Green designs is right that your fabricator should have explained the nature of the stone that responsibility shouldnt be on you if the piece cracks. That doesnt look like a fissure to me as from the pic it doesnt follow any natural line making the repair very difficult. If you arent satisfied you dont have to accept that repair. Before you do anything speak to the fabricator and explain you cant live with this in your kitchen and you need this resolved. Consult with your lawyer and be firm with the fabricator-these things happen and the faabricator needs to make it right. See if you can find a slab that will match the rest of the kitchen. They should help you find something that you are happy with. I think if you keep the cracked piece you will never be satisfied with it. Comments (50)oyama pots are self-watering pots often used for African Violets. you can google to see what they look like - it's easier to understand ;). my set up resembles it ..somewhat. a pic is worth a 1000 words...;))) here's the simple plastic tumbler with perlite and some sphag on top to keep perlite moist on the surface, with yarn wick stuck in it - it grows untented now in west sun.and now i drop it into a 2nd cup without holes (water reservoir holding very small amt of water when the 1st cup is inside).when a plant is a thirsty one i give it more water, sometimes covering above the hole, so the perlite is flooded by half may be. this is in reality hydroponics. when i transplant into the mix later and still use the self-watering wick it becomes passive hydro (or sometimes people call it semi-hydro since plant roots are in the soil mix). that is how i can keep so many plants and have time to do many other things including travel. this way i can relax and do other things for a week or so - the plant has water, the perlite gets aerated periodically when the water level recedes. and i can see what's happening easily....See Morejayteadesigns
