3 week old seedlings zone 5

Seedling came up fine. 15 plantlets in individual 3oz pots.

About 3 inch's tall. Basicly 1 1/2 months warm weather left. Will they go dormant as an adult will, with leaf drop or do I have to try and keep them going under lights, warm temps. and watering? I could let them die and start over in the spring...naw, I couldn't.

I don't think seedlings have the resources (stem, root development) to survive dry overwinter. I would keep them warm and under lights and water them when the soil is dry. I seem to remember my seedlings stayed green the first winter. Then the next growing season the puppy found them and chewed 'em all up. So much for my plumeria seedlings!

Hello BloomnBill,

I agree with Dave (again...he's good!). Grow them under lights or by a warm sunny window for the Winter.

How big (or small) is a 3 oz. pot? You may want to repot them into a 4" to 6" diameter pot.

Or they have those trays that hold 15 4" square pots that are space savers? (Like you buy a tray of annuals in.)

Then next Spring plant them into 12" diameter pots.

I wouldn't worry about it; lots of bulbs sprout in the fall when there's a warm spell. Sometimes, the leaf tips get burned when they freeze, but the flower buds are usually still deep in the bulbs at this point.

We're "mapped" as a Zone 5, but it acts more like a Zone 4 here, and early June is our planting-out date. I can put them out sooner if I make a tent for them in the greenhouse and keep it warm at night or during cold snaps. We'll have random cold nights and even a couple snows or frosts through most of June, so we need to keep on our toes. Starting indoors in January or early February, the plants are often so large they need two potting up sessions and it gets to where there is no room to place them where they still get enough light. Leaves begin to drop and I end up deep- or trench-planting 3-foot tall twigs. So I aim for late February germinating and get them out to the gh when room gets too tight indoors, usually sometime in May. I deal with the weather then as it's dealt to us, every season is a little different by a few weeks. Inside the unheated gh, with simple tents or covers for the plants, it only takes some Christmas lights or a small 60-watt bulb and a small fan to keep them happy, even when it dips down to 15 or so outside. Colder than that, I must add a small heater in the gh proper. A remote thermometer and frequent visits keep me advised. We enjoyed our first tom on the 3rd of July last season, that's the earliest ever for us. If I wait till mid-March to germinate, I don't have to deal with heating them in the gh as much, but it's also getting into late July or August for ripeness and late-season types barely squeek in before frost, so I need as early a start as I can manage. Too early comes with its own set of problems. But, if you can pot up adequately and give the whole plant lots of light (not just their tops from an overhead shop light), plus handle the much trickier hardening off and planting out of these overlarge "seedlings," it can work to your advantage. Since you have just the one or a few early starts, maybe just keep it to a large pot and set outdoors when it's a good time. That way, you can always haul it back in if there's a late frost or for hardening off. Just protect it from strong winds so it won't blow over! I also sell a few plants and getting that just-right combo of good size and vigorous health always helps sell them. Spindly, sickly too-early plants or too-late, too-small don't work. Timing your own season is the key, with proper light and space to grow indoors till then. -Ed

Is it ok, To put coffee grounds around 3 week old tomato seedling

I heard that coffee grinds help to fertilize the soil and help to get rid of pests. So,I put coffee grounds on top of my soil of my tomato seedlings and they are turning an odd shade of light green and some of them have white spots on the leaves. Maybe after reading this artile I will try to scrape off the coffee grounds and then maybe integrate them into the soil later when I transplant the tomatoes into the garden if they are still alive I hope. P.S. Are there any ways to organically or naturally fertiize the soil for tomatoes? Some websites are talking about fish? You can't use tuna fish can you? Wouldn't that be salty?

Thanks everyone--yeah, I'm thinking the medium I used to start them in was a bad choice. I wanted to stay 'organic' so I used an organic soil-less mix but it sounds like everyone is frankly having better luck with miracle grow slow release fertilizer mix. I fed them a very weak organic fertilizer at one month and another weak miracle grow one last night. Now my pumpkins on the other hand...maybe I'll just become a full time squash gardener :) The temperature stays around 66 degrees but it hasn't been that warm consistently, (I'm in college and we're trying to save money on bills!)Hopefully they'll just self correct. if they are at least 5 inches they'll make it but newly hatched seedlings don't do as well

Hi there:
Here in South Florida, we grow well over 500 seedlings and start this time of year for next Spring. They will keep their leaves during the winter months the 1st year of their life, but will need a little less watering & feed, and will need light and have some type of heat. I find the morning light is by far the best for the winter months. After the 1st year, you'll see dormancy. Keep in a 4" pot until the following Spring. Then you can transplant into a one gallon pot for them to grow! I hope this has helped.

I just received a very small seedling. It is in a 2" pot with three very small leaves. I put it in a plastic tent and have it on the table near a window. Is this wrong? Should I replant it while it is this small? Should I take it out of the tent and just water once daily. I'm sure it would dry out in a day, being in such a small pot. I would hate to lose it, but don't know how to care for it. I have never had one before. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello SkyGardening,

Yes, get rid of the plastic bag immediately!

And yes, repot it into a 12" diameter pot right away!

These are fast growers who's roots like to have room to grow. I know a 12" pots seems big, but trust me. Don't skimp on the pot size...or good potting soil. AVOID the soil that has the water holding gel. Soil with fertilizer is fine. Don't use topsoil either.

Also, move it outside into a bright shaded area until it starts showing some good growth. This will keep it from drying out or burning up while it is a little sprout.

Brugs do not like to be in saturated soil, especially when small. This large pot will stay damp for a while so that will help you.

When it is about a foot tall, move to 1/2 sun a day for your zone, or maybe full sun if you are finally into the cooler weather by then.

Thes plants cannot take frost so bring it in before then and place by a warm sunny window for the Winter.

If you are growing plumeria seedlings indoors, keep an eye on any spider mites or whiteflys that may appear and irradicate them immediately. I lost several seedlings last winter. One day they looked fine - next day stressed and then GONE. I will be feeding a systemic food/insecticide this winter.
