SouthCoast Plumeria Society Sale Aug. 6?

Is the sale on Aug. 6 at 1:00 at Murdy Park and is it open to the public or do you have to be a member? Do they have a good selection of rooted plants and are they reasonably priced? I couldn't find the information on their web site. Thank you.

Open to the public. Usually plenty of rooted plants. Some common, some good name brands, some outstanding varieties. It depends on who has what left over. Prices are reasonable to true bargains. Members are selling left over stock so some are just dumping to make room. Each person is experienced so they are all very open to questions and helpful. The drawings and door prizes can be great too. One of my favorite fucia/yellow plants I won there. The sales start at 1:00 and then a brief meeting, then a speaker (this time it is Jack Murdy the owner of Kimi's who is very helpful to share research). Then a break for drawings and sales. You can come and go from the meeting as it is informal (shorts and Hawaiian shirts.) Snacks are appreciated from visitors. They will also have some catalogues and books to sell while they last. P.S. The well respected Bud Guillot (Guillot's sunset, Calif. Sally, Makaha Sunn, etc.) is always there and worth meeting. Also John Tarvin sells an upright Aztec Gold which is the only one I have seen and own. Cheryl sometimes has some exotics from the islands and orient. Neil sells the white with red stripe (incorrectly called trumpet gardenia) which has a unique spicy smell and grows like a weed and is an excellent combo with celadine for smell. It is also the longest bloomer and really hardy.

So what were your best finds at the sale? I went with $200...buying and splitting with a GW daff loving cyber friend. The rest of the budget went to packs of NO ID ones for various prices, and various quantities per pack...most 3-7 bulbs. The club had gotten together earlier in the season before digging at a member's house, and had tried to positively identify these NO-ID ones. They weren't positive on the names, so they chose to sell them as NO ID ones, rather than give them an incorrect name. I'm kind of guessing that they likely are not the more common ones, or they would have been in agreement on what they were. I got NOID ones from divisions 1 through 7 and 1 in div 13, with the petal and cup colors listed. I've never met a daff I did not immediately love except Rip Van Winkle and Von Sion...both look like they are having bad hair days. Several members there agreed with me on that one...lol I was at the daff sale alone for over 2 hours, with a member helping me all the while. I think I was their best customer of the day, and they gave me a complimentary Society Membership. Whoo-Hoo! I stopped by the iris sale then for a bit. Their TB were all $3, and the smaller varieties were $2. Not really being familiar with any varieties I was looking for, I passed except for buying just one...besides having already spent my budget. There were georgeous daylily pics posted above the fans for sale. I just looked a bit, and it looked like they mostly ranged from $5 to $10...rough estimate. I was not looking for anything in particular, and was on such a daff high, I didn't buy any. The hostas I did not take in at all. They were potted, and I noticed there were not many left at 11 when I left. It was a wonderful morning, and I was glad I had gone alone. No one other than a daff lover would have been content to wait patiently on me to finish my shopping trying to get as many varieties as possible. Sue

Thanks for the well wishes! I started out with 16 possible entries a couple of months ago, last night I made the final decision on the top ten. They're all nice but the ones I selected are my favorites and IMHO are the best of the best. There's at least one that will wow the judges. For the average grower it is not a big production, but for me the being so anal about the presentation and the headache of making a pot to match the plant it is fairly involved. Most of the specimens I'm taking have to be prepared months in advance, taking them from growing pots or bed to show containers, root pruning or downright removal. There's one plant I cut in half to fit into the pot and still look balanced. Another was plucked from the ground 5:00 this morning and staged before I went to work. There's only two that I did nothing to, since I want them to grow slow I just leave them in the show pots year round. Then there's transportation. If it was just across town it would be a piece of cake, but a 6hr drive takes some preparation. Each plant has to be anchored to the pot so it doesn't vibrate out and topple over. Then the smaller plants need to boxed in such a way so they don't dump from going around a corner. On one plant the stems are so fragile that I put netting around so they don't snap from the bumpy ride. Another plant that didn't make the cut

Murdy Park is in Huntington Beach but it is in the north part of the city so it is very close to Westminister. If you use mapquest or google maps and enter Goldenwest and Norma you can see the location of the park. It is very easy to find. Plumie- I would just like to voice my opinion on your watering issue. Mike (mikeod) knows his sh#t when it comes to plumies and those other guys are full of sh#t. The single most common cause of failure in rooting cuttings is from watering. The most common cause of stem rot in summer is watering. period. Also, having an unrooted cutting exposed to the mid-day sun when it is 100+ degrees is asking for sunburn stems and other problems. Plumeria stems are full of water and it is not being used unless there are leaves to use it. Simple misting replaces any moisture loss through the stem. What you can do is go around the inside edge of the pot and push your fingers into the soil mix to make a small moat up against the pot wall. Carefully, using a sports water bottle, fill the moat so water runs down the outside soil but the middle stays dry. this basically increases the humidity in the center of the pot but is not wet except down the inside wall of the pot. When in doubt, do nothing. Watering does not mean the plant will fail every time but not watering has a far smaller failure rate. Realize that many nursury people know alot about plants but almost nothing about plumies. Also, P.101 has some excellent information and some I totally disagree with (ie. using pea gravel to hold a cutting- I call it how to burn your stem and sunburn your plant.) This forum has some very experience individuals who have tried and failed enough to form good opinions. Mike, Tony, Karyn, Dave, Joe, Phillip, and Janet to name just a few whose posts I always respect their opinions and usually totally agree with their comments. Their experiences are in the same environments that we grow in. Their successes and failures are the same that we will experience. I think it is cash only but I am not sure. I will try to get in touch with Neil who handles sales to find out. I will be there and I just got a call from Bud G. who will be there too. Any of you who come don't hesitate to introduce yourselves to me and I will help you with any questions. It is a really nice group and they all share the passion for the plumie. I have learned so much from the members who are knowledgeable and willing to share info. If you notice all the help Tony has given from the Valley, they are like him. I think tony comes too, which is a good distance to drive. This club, San Diego, Arizona and Texas have groups that are very experienced and are experimenting on process and plants. I would imagine that Florida would also be included but I am not aware of their organizations. Many of your new ideas and plants will be stimulated by these major markets and they stimulate work in the islands. This is good for all of us as it keeps the new ideas coming. And, eventually it brings the prices down to a obtainable level (consider that a rooted Metallica is closing in three hours and is currently bid at over $400) Love to have it, can't afford it- but in a few years it will be $70, then$50, then $29.95. The clubs get the rare ones spread around and increase the speed of reasonable availability. Thus I recommend that anyone who can, become part of the clubs and spread the wealth so we all benefit. The clubs and forums are essential keys to the growth and success of plumeria plants. Plus, at the South Coast P.S. you make your annual fee back in the discount prices you get from O.C.Farm Supply. I would like to have a pink plumeria for my garden, but I don't want some rare plant that costs a small fortune. Will they have just ordinary ones at ordinary prices? What will the starting prices be?

The general prices are about half of the cost in a nursery. Cuttings can be as low as eight dollars and most are below twenty five. Rooted plants are often two year old plants but now there might be some ones. They range from twenty to fifty. Armstrong nursery sells a pretty pink called playful from fifteen to fifty depending on size. I would recommend California Sally because many members have one so chances are good. It is a wonderful pink. Look also for a Charlotte Ebert, Eva Lani, Grove farm, Kaulani, or plastic pink. For a few extra bucks, these are such nice pinks to own and there are sometimes many available. I cannot predict what will show but I have many from the sales.
Murdy Park is south from the 405 (toward the ocean) on Goldenwest. Go by Goldenwest College then homes and come to Norma (Warner is too far). Turn left and the clubhouse is ahead on the right in the park. Look for me, I am Bill (old,tan surfer) and say hi. I can help you make a choice. Bill

Oh man! It figures, I just found this site, am within driving distance and missed the sale by 12 hours!!! Can you tell me if there will be another soon or is it usually just once a year? I am soooo bummed out right now!
