Oh what a wonderful idea! Maybe the future bride to be would take to sale as early wedding gift??? I'm sure you would happily forego honeymoon for a few more plumies...LOL! Maybe you can go to Hawaii for honeymoon and get lots of new sticks (while bride is trying to figure out where you ran off to. ha, ha)

Anybody want to fly me over from DC? lol But how would I get my plumies home : ) I've only seen plumeria for sale in this area once and that's at a nursery by my house that specializes in water gardens and tropicals. If you ask for plumeria around here most people look at you like you're nuts! Have a good time at the meeting and think about all us poor mid-Atlantic plumeria starved folks.

You are in the SAn Fernando Valley, me too. There are several places here you can go find plants. The best is Island Plumeria in Northridge. Matthew has all the best, hybrids all. Have to make an appt, they say his back yard is a huge nursery. Many on here buy from him, I have 3 of his plants..very knowledgeable. call 818-970-2483..if interested. I have never been to his house, bought from him at a festival in Northridge..

also green arrow nursery has rooted plants in Granada Hills.. and hear green thumb..we are lucky to have all these around us

Tx. for the info. I am disappointed though I thought it might be in the valley. I am rooting 8 cuttings and they are doing great and would like to ask you a ques. I hear water every week, water 1 cup a week water 1/4 cup a week. I don't know who to listen to. Ihave only been doing this 5 days and am so confused. I don't want to mess up anything because after 5 days these lil buggers are getting new leaves & claws. WHAT DO I DO??? Need some help here.

Plumie if they are new cuttings that haven't been rooted DO NOT WATER! It takes about 4-8 weeks for most cuttings to root. You can give the claws an occasional misting. Don't water until you have well developed leaves. Good luck with your plants.

I just came back from West Valley Nursery in Tarzana. Went to look at his plumerias and spoke to the owner. He is Hawaian and here is what he told me. He said you have to water to form the roots. He said especially in this valley heat the cuttings must be watered. He had a bunch of them beauties that were under an awning that were continuously being misted with an automatic mister. He emphatically said to get roots you must have water. Soooo! I'm going for the "gusto" Icame home and watered all 8 of them. I will let you know what happens I am either going to blow it or make out like a bandit. Will let you know.

He may be Hawaiian, but his recommendations go against everything I have read, heard, and experienced. Plumeria cuttings should be watered when initially placed in the soil medium, then left to develop roots on their own. You can mist the top, but no water into the soil. If there are no roots, there is nothing to take up the water and the water just sits there promoting rot. The mister system he uses just keeps the temps down and the tops of the cuttings moist.

Before I watered the cuttings I have been researching like CRAZY!! I went on Plumeria Society of America and I think the other one was Plumeria 101 websites. They both said water sparingly, when pot is dry or if in doubt wait l week then water. I went to Nurseries who have cuttings and they told me the same thing. It's a toss up who is correct, you and several others who definitely agree with you or the websites I was on and the nurseries. I will know soon enuf and will let both you and others on the website know how it turns out. Ihad to make a decision pronto I HOPE I did the right thing.

Hi Plumie.
Your cuttings don't need any water at all until the leaves get about 6" long, all the leaves and hopefully are growing small fine hair roots, they will rot with too much water. Remember..I have one like yours mine has 2 leaves 6" long, rest are 2"..I am not watering at all. No water has been in this pot..only trickle from spraying the leaves each day. Am waiting until I get a full head of leaves..Then will water and feed half amount... Stay in there.

There are a lot on here that have grown plants for years and constant cuttings. Its my first cutting like yours, do not want to mess it up, you either. If your soil is too wet, put it in the sun! dry it out.

My message went into cyberspace..Was it Sego nursery you went too? the fat hawaiian is a smart a--. mist yes, water no..he is wrong. I have talked to him, told me odd things. Now if your plumies have leaves, they are developing small roots.. but do not water until the leaves are 6" or more..full head, hopefully roots are growing too. Put your plants out in the sun you have watered, let them dry out..forget the advice given by fat hawaiian guy..let them dry out and pray they will make it. NO MOre WAter until larger head of leaves. then can water and 1/2 fertilizer, feed.

My plant..like yours, I do not follow what is told on here, I do not water when planted, but do mist daily, little water trickles in, enough..Mist daily the leaves and stem.. If it was me and you have very wet soil, would be tempted to gently pull out the plant and put in dry soil..but you need someone to give you advise, more qualified than me!!!!!

I went to West Valley Nursery in Tarzana on Ventura Blvd. His tele. # is 818-342-2623. After Iheard from Mike on the forum I really got upset with myself and I called Matthew from Island Plumeria. Nice guy he told me I did the right thing. He actually called back and spoke to myhusband I wasen't home and told Mark that in this heat you have to water. He said and W.Valley told me that you need heat and water to grow roots. You know what. This is what I think. This forum may grow one way and the others grow another. Isn't it possible there are two routes to go and they both work. I will know in abt. a week by then I will know how mine are doing. I checked with the Plumeria Society of America and Plumeria 101 the agreed with Matthew. I was told to keep it moist when watering not wet. kAREN i BET THERE IS MORE THAN ONE WAY TO ROOT CUTTINGS.

Tx. for all your help. Yesterday it was 110 in Woodland Hills and I went out and looked at my poor plumies baking in the sun and I had a choice to make. I still think both ways work if you do it my way water sparingly. I put abt. 1" of water in the pot just enuf to make it moist. We'll see I'll let you and Mike know how this turns out. I'm going to water once a week the same way. I'm a gambler Iguess. Meanwhile the Hawaiian guy isn't the fat one,this one is nice looking and thin. I think they are 2 brothers.

110 wow, that ridiclous..Was over a hundred here yesterday and higher the day before. Suggestion, Don't put your cuttings out in the afternoon west sun, will burn the leaves with that high a temp, I have mine facing the east morning, shade afternoon. That heat will burn a lot of plants.
Ha on the Hawaiian guy, sounds like two different nurseries I am in the East Valley, west is hotter, sorry for you!

Woodland Hills is the hottest spot in the valley in the summer and the coldest in the winter. 2 weeks ago it was ll6 hotter than PalmSprings. Just checked my plumies and they are looking good will let you know next week if they are still on this planet. Ihave a good feeling abt. this.

If I understand your post correctly, you are trying to find out how to develop branches on plumeria as opposed to a single stalk. You cannot do that directly with fertilizer. Plumeria branch when they bloom. Blooms develop on a stalk that grows at the tip of the stem or branch. New branches grow around the base of the stalk. Plumeria bloom when they feel like it. Many growers use a high middle number fertilizer to stimulate more blooms which will indirectly cause more branches.

So, let your plumeria grow, keep it healthy, and it will bloom and branch for you.

Another way to stimulate branching is to cut off the tip of the plumeria. New branches will develop at the leaf scars below the cut. However, the plant will not bloom that year and perhaps not the next year. Since most of us look forward to blooms, this is not frequently used just for branching.

Ouch! I didn't know they were seedlings. In that case you have to be really patient. Seedlings usually take three years to bloom, and their first blooms are not usually what they will eventually look like. So, depending on when they were first planted, you could have a while to wait for blooms and branches.

On the other hand, several of my seedlings put out multiple branches from the start. Usually I trim the side branches off to create a single straight stem, but sometimes I leave them on to see what will happen. I have some now that are a year old and have multiple branches, but, of course, no blooms.

I would not start the bloom booster fertilizer on the seedlings until they are older. I, personally, don't use that fertilizer, so I have no experience with it. Hopefully, someone with more experience with those fertilizers will chime in. It may be better for you to start a new thread with that question so others will see it. Right now, this is buried in a thread about the SCPS plant sale.

Water/no water???
About two months ago my friend trimmed her plumeria tree. She gave me one large cutting(about a 3ft branch) I was going on vacation for two weeks and did not want to leave it drying all that time. What did I know about plumeria cuttings???? NOTHING. So I filled a bucket with water and put it in there and left it in the middle of my kitchen with the florecent light on. Well, when I got gack from vacation it was growing roots. I since then cut the branch and made about ten cuttings. Well they all did awsome. I planted three of them and gave away some. Can't explain it. Everyone told me I should have let it dry then plant it.
I can't explain it but I am one happy plumie lover.

Plumie- I would just like to voice my opinion on your watering issue. Mike (mikeod) knows his sh#t when it comes to plumies and those other guys are full of sh#t. The single most common cause of failure in rooting cuttings is from watering. The most common cause of stem rot in summer is watering. period. Also, having an unrooted cutting exposed to the mid-day sun when it is 100+ degrees is asking for sunburn stems and other problems. Plumeria stems are full of water and it is not being used unless there are leaves to use it. Simple misting replaces any moisture loss through the stem. What you can do is go around the inside edge of the pot and push your fingers into the soil mix to make a small moat up against the pot wall. Carefully, using a sports water bottle, fill the moat so water runs down the outside soil but the middle stays dry. this basically increases the humidity in the center of the pot but is not wet except down the inside wall of the pot. When in doubt, do nothing. Watering does not mean the plant will fail every time but not watering has a far smaller failure rate. Realize that many nursury people know alot about plants but almost nothing about plumies. Also, P.101 has some excellent information and some I totally disagree with (ie. using pea gravel to hold a cutting- I call it how to burn your stem and sunburn your plant.) This forum has some very experience individuals who have tried and failed enough to form good opinions. Mike, Tony, Karyn, Dave, Joe, Phillip, and Janet to name just a few whose posts I always respect their opinions and usually totally agree with their comments. Their experiences are in the same environments that we grow in. Their successes and failures are the same that we will experience. I will listen to them over a boatload of nursery workers because in my experiences i recognize the quality of their experiences. Just my opinion- Bill

Thank God you cleared the water/non watering issue, Bill! Reading this post makes me, a newbie, totally confused! I killed the first cutting I purchased at Wal-mart in Hawaii because foolishly I thought you had to water every day. Now I have a second cutting where I just water the claws because after doing research and reading this forum, I am not to water until leaves are formed. So, until my stick has leaves, I will continue to only water the claws. But I am curious about one thing- in tropical places like Hawaii, where rainfall are plentiful, how does the plumeria cuttings bloom or do people there not water the cuttings either?

Hawaii is volcanic ash on rock and Caribbean islands are sand. Rain, which seems not to have the microorganism of tap water, Blows right through the soil which dries quickly in the heat. this seems to have no real effect on the rooting plumie. Even here in the states, you notice that rain in moderate amounts seems to not effect potted plants or sandy soils but in clay soils it is deadly. Generally in the islands, you do not water plumeria, you just wait for the next squall. that is the best answer I have for this unusual problem. Bill
