Dog Bombs - what do you do?

I work for a small lanscaping company, and lately we've been running into lots of dog doo.

I'm wondering how other professional gardners/lanscapers handle the issue.

Usually, if it is just a little, I'll move it out of the way and do my best to get the job done right. If there's an area that is really full of dog droppings, I'll skip the area, or only pull weeds, etc., if I can do so without touching the droppings.

The owner of my company will occassionaly tell homeowners to clean the yard before we are scheduled to work there, but mostly we have to deal with it.

I'm wondering how other people who do this kind of work handle this issue. I feel pretty strongly that I'd have to get paid a good deal more to be expected to deal with more than a very small amount of dog doo that got missed in the clean up process.

There's lots of cash in doo-doo...
Start your own company, call your bosses clients and pick up the doo-doo before your go on site and charge your new customer what you feel is an appropriate amount!

There are actually companies that do dog poop cleanup - I found several in the Maryland Pet Gazette magazine. I'm trying to think of a tactful way to share one of their business cards with your clients...

No odor. But that may also mean no nutrients. My uncle, an old farmer when I was growing up, spread manure on his fields and tilled it in within 24 hours of spreading it so the nutrients would not be lost to the atmosphere. He said what you smell from manure is nutrients going out into the air.

What do you do to protect wood floors from dog water bowls, etc.?

Hi. The occasional water spill is not a problem with hardwood floors. Remember that wood floors have been used for hundreds of years in all types of climates, most notably the harsh Northern and Midwestern winters; snow & sleet not withstanding. Take normal precautions you'd take with your carpets. Clean up spills as soon as possible. Do not allow standing water, etc. For your dog bowls, a nice rug under the bowls will prevent them from slipping and scratching the floor, as well as help absorb the occasional sloshing. As for snow, the salt, sand, and other abrasives tracked in are of more concern than the water. I would definitely have a really good rubber mat or something to protect the floor at the entrances, more to protect the finish that the wood it self. If the design allows, it might be good to leave a "foyer" of tile or marmoleum to allow for wet boots, etc. And if mom or the girls favor high heels, leave them there too. High heel shoes is one of a wood floors worst enemies. Those little devils and really mark up all but the hardest woods. If your other kid is a large dog, keep those nails trimmed. Otherwise, wood is pretty carefree. Have fun!

"The cat isn't fixed and he sprays everywhere." Is this what you saw (the spraying) or what you were told. I have four male cats (3 outdoor) all of whom spray whilst outside, but do NOT spray indoors. If they go in the house, they use the box like gentlemen. Sadly, IMHO, if the owner were looking for him, you would see some activity on his/her part. All of the people know of the cat, etc., but the correct number isn't on the collar? Something is rotten in Denmark. Poor cat. The distant neighbor is feeding him and in touch with the owner, yet the owner hasn't come to get his/her pet? WTH? People who own an animal then let them loose (for whatever reason) in the hopes someone else will take them in should be strung up. I would call the no-kill shelter if you're not planning to take him in. Is there really such a thing as a no-kill shelter anymore, and are there even any open spots left? We always end up taking in the ones when they show up. Pretty much how we've gotten all but 1 of our fleet over the years. This last one, "Miles" was a big project. Besides the behavioral issue toward the dogs, which we were able to overcome, he was a mess. We had to invest some $$$ to get him "house ready", neutered, shots, shaved (matted beyond belief), but he has turned into the most loyal well loved member of our gang. It has now been over a year and we are so happy we took him in. Funny thing, he is such a people cat (or I should say DH cat) as he follows DH everywhere. Shower, out to the pool, back and forth from his office to other rooms of our home. He sleeps between us on the bed every night. Love him to pieces. I hope someone with a heart takes this poor cat home and gives him the proper care. Too bad you live so far, or I'd come and get him from you. Sad that none of these people you've talked to has bothered to give this guy half a chance of a proper life.

Abandoned dog locked up - what do I do?

Thank you! But my goal was not to get a mother or father of 3 young kids arrested. I read that is what police would do. They just texted and said that the dog ran away, and asked to be on a look out. So I went on a look out. Found the dog in their garage, with multiple threads tied to the garage's door to make sure nobody enters (are they keeping drugs there? ;) ). They did not bother to text again and report that the dog was caught. The dog came to the window, lice sticking out of her face, nails overgrowing to a circle shape. Horrible. At least garage door has a tarp instead of one picked of wood, so now I can squeeze food and water in just in case she is not fed.

A mowing service I worked for when I started out took buckets along and picked up the turds before mowing. By the end of the day each bucket had quite a load. Disgusting! We were doing alot of places with close-cut lawns maintained with reel mowers, making perfect passes each time so the stripes were just so, and all that kind of low intelligence nonsense that the customers were focused on instead of having nice gardens. If there were any interesting specimens or combinations at any of these places, I don't remember them. The contradiction of on the one hand the faux sophistication of paying to have a golf course lawn and on the other hand the sloppiness (illegality?) of loose dogs, some of them quite large (and generating quite large detritus) running around and soiling the same areas every day was not lost on me.

Yet, a guy I know that has worked mostly by himself mowing and pruning for some decades now has always just mowed right through the stuff. Must have different kinds of customers. He does seem to use rotary mowers quite a bit, maybe exclusively.

I've been fortunate so far, since none of my clients has had a dog. A gardener/hort person or designer is not responsible for doing the doo duty, so if I encountered mounds while doing my rounds, I'd politely ask the homeowner to have the stuff removed before I did any digging, staking or other work.

The reference to dog "bombs" gave me a chuckle. Here's a link to a poop removal service that calls itself Minesweepers. Their page has a list of lots of the nicknames for dog doo. You probably have businesses like this in your area, as lots of people are jumping on the dog poop bandwagon seeing a lucrative new line of work in urban areas.
