Am I crazy to think I can do this in a seed starter kit?
Comments (2)I too would be skeptical as it is far from the ideal set-up and you'll encounter several issues. But can you grow some plants? Sure. Lots of FAQs and discussions here you need to browse through before starting - the problems with kits, need for supplemental lighting, heating pads, how to use the cover, soil temps required for germination, why plants get leggy, etc. "Success" is a relative term. Some are content with what they can produce with what you have. Most are not. But it all depends on how much money and effort you want to put into it. The more reading you do here the better your chance for success. Comments (5)I would definitely wait until I came back. Brick suppliers are notorious for sending out multiple lot runs of brick for 1 job. There can be huge color variation between lots that you may not notice until you're looking at a giant expanse of wall. We had 3 different lot#s show up in our shipment--only 1 was the same as the brick they had already put down for the foundation. I noticed it and brought it to the GC's attention. The brick supplier apologized and brought out more brick in the correct lot. Our framer was working on a gorgeous house in the town I work in that had a brick lot problem--beautiful large Georgian-Federalist style house. There was a definite line that ran across the front of the house about 2/3 of the way up where you could clearly see a different lot of brick was used--the options were to tear down the wall and start over, live with it as-is, or paint the brick. They now have a beautiful very large Georgian-Federalist style home in a pale yellow color....See MoreChanging exterior and enlarging second story -- am I crazy?
Comments (15)I think the front of the house used to be a porch, but at some point (possibly in the 40s, when the second story was added) a front addition and rear addition were added. It was a tiny house originally! We had an architect come look at it today and he didn't think foundation issues would be a problem (he's done several second story additions in the neighborhood) but he says we would have a structural engineer look at it. He also thought our budget was very tight, but that maybe we could afford to have it framed and roofed, and then do a lot of the finishing ourselves (which was our plan). We won't be able to get a certificate of occupancy until a lot of things are basically done but I think we're ok with that. Regarding whether it's worth it -- if we can finish everything off for less than $175K over the next two years, I'm pretty sure it's worth it. The houses one block up from us are in the 800K-$1M range; our block is mostly in the 700K range even for some of the scruffier looking houses so we could spend our whole budget and still only have as much investment in the house as the others are currently worth. This isn't considered a weekend home area; it's very much a full-time family residence area, we are just in a unique position of having an employer-subsidized rental in the city, so it can be a weekend place for us until when/if we decide to move up there more full-time. I should find out about the increase in property taxes though. This thread is really helpful -- thank you all for your feedback!...See MoreMy husband thinks I am crazy!
Comments (22)Hi, Calibean! Beautiful table! IMHO, I'm not seeing those chairs as being your best choice either. And the original ones you wanted with the nailhead trim would likely be a cleaning nightmare if your kids are as messy as you describe. I think if I were you, I'd keep a watch on CL for chairs where you might find a great deal. In this economy, I'm always a little reticent to advise someone to spend much money if DH doesn't agree. Sometimes they're truly worried about how to keep the family budget fiscally sound. So first of all make sure you're both on the same page there. Perhaps using the dining chairs even longterm isn't such a bad idea. Many homes now only have one eating area (at least out west where I live) even in the 2400 sf range. Perhaps we're more casual than other parts of the country. Good luck with your choice! BTW for you and many others who don't seem to notice, right below the message box is a place to post links so they're clickable. Just copy the address you want to link, then paste it in the Link box, then type a name for your link below it. It's simple and makes life easier for us to see your link without having to copy and paste....See MorebruceNH
