This is just a reminder to PULL YOUR LEAVES !! If you are in the path of Hurricane Fay, you need to pull your leaves on your Plumera - Frangipani plants today. I have a lot of new growth on mine and don't want to lose it. If you pull the leaves, then there is very little for the wind to grab. My Plumeria grows quickly so I will have new leaves in a couple of weeks.

If you want to have less damage from broken limbs on your Plumeria, then remember to pull your leaves before a big storm or hurricane. I am in the path of Hurricane Fay. I pulled all of my leaves this morning... and just left the last little leaf at the very end. I got this tip from a grower in Hawaii and it works for me. I had very little breakage in the last hurricane to come through SW Florida.

I am over in the Palm Beaches. Had a 10-year-old Plumeria break off at the soil line, during Hurricane Francis, back in 2004. I didn't cut off the leaves. Biggest cutting I ever rooted!

Do you think I should remove the leaves, over here, on the east coast? I have an Aztec Gold, 6-foot tall, a min. of 20 tips, and at least 12 inflos. Some are close to blooming. About 6 more trees in the ground. The weather is already getting nasty here!

Yes Bob... I would pull all the leaves. They grow back so fast. FAY keeps moving West, so who knows where it goes when it comes off of Cuba. I do not pull the flowers because it is just a little stem and does not grab the wind. It is just the leaves that drag it down to the ground.

I also stake mine with rebar. I have coconut palms and use the netting from these palms to gently wrap around the center of the trees, then I use clear 1 inch tape to hold in place. I move the netting up and down the stem monthly, so there is no pressure or rotting areas too. On bigger trees, I use those metal fence posts with the same tape but always have the coconut tree netting around the stem. The coconut netting looks nice too.

I save all the netting from my coconut palms and use to line hanging baskets etc. It is also good to put a piece in the bottom of a potted plant for drainage. It last a long time, much better than the coconut liners from China they sell in the garden centers.

Also... after the hurricane passes, it is a good time to spray if you have any bug problems. With all the leaves gone it is easy to do.

Lellie - Laura - Susana, last Sunday I was lucky enough to have a tour of the yard of the Gulfcoast Plumeria Society president - I think he's right that he has 1,000 plumerias in his yard! Front, side, and back are mostly planted and on the other side he has his collection in pots and then the ones he's rooting. He said no one ever leaves his house without a loaded car and he's right. I thought we'd just be happy to see a lot of beautiful plumerias but we came home with a bunch of new babies too! I was amazed! Here's the link to the GPS home page, it's the only plumeria society in Florida and we're lucky enough that it's right here. I am planning to go to the July meeting, it would be fun if some of you could go too. Hi Brandan Love your site; some really great stuff and awesome photos! I hope your flooding is freshwater from all the rain. If I remember right about the East Coast, isn't the St Lucie saltwater? We got Fay first over here on the West Coast, but my yard right in the Ten Thousand Islands bays was totally under saltwater. Take a look: Poor cannas! Bougies & Gingers don't like drowning in the bay! Another bouganvillea, some wind-whipped plumeria and one of my Tagami clumps that I thought sure was going to bloom soon And a shot showing my clerodendrum I got at Ricky's trade, my once-gorgeous canna bed and more heliconia. I didn't get to shoot any pictures of the actual flooding, since it was raining and blowing so hard (70 mhp) and it was kinda dark and dreary. I know that would've been more interesting that seeing a bunch of dead plants! I can't bear to take pics of all my hybrid hibiscus corpses, though. I had to pull out my 'maters, sweet taters and squash vines, along with begonias and dahlias and stuff like that. I think all the trees will come back, even though they are now nudies; the pink tab is a champ, though, and so far is still full of foliage. Attached is a photo of the frangipani in question. From ground to tip top is about 12 feet, and the curved branch on the left had a plume of leaves and flowers on the end that broke off; I'm hoping that blooms will again sprout from this tip. Thoughts? Also worth pointing out is that what now faces 9 o'clock in the photo was facing straight up for the life of the tree, and hence the reason everything appears to be curving left. This had been coming out of the center of a cluster of spiny, inhospitable scraggly foliage, and it had been growing perfectly sideways in order to get out of the brush and into the sun. The stump that remains from where I cut it looks like a periscope (a sharp 90ÃÂº angle) that peeks out of the ground. I'm hoping that in a few years of full sun and being free from encumbrances, it will begin to fill out. Is there any way to promote new branch sprouts along the tree, or do I have to basically let it do whatever it's going to do?

Yikes. It's going to be a b***h to re-pot this guy cause he's so big and unwieldy. I fear I might break a branch. But I'll give it a try. He's going to have to go back into the same pot, though - it's already at the upper level of us being able to load him onto a dolly to move into/out of garage. Will give him all new potting soil. i suppose if I see rotten roots it's safe to cut them off. But should I see that he's pot-bound, is it safe to prune the roots any? And during its past two winters in the garage the pot did rest on bare concrete. We kept lights on constantly and ran a small heater on those few days when it got really cold as we had other plants in the garage. The first winter in the garage didn't seem to bother him any. (snivel) if he dies my heart shall break. I got him because he's the same type frangipani as I was familiar with from my childhood in Saudi Arabia, where this Singapora Obtusa was common and grew to HUGE trees, and perfumed their entire vicinity. He's grown from a mere stick into the specimen you see in the pix.

I am not doing it yet but there is a chance I will get out there to cut back some leaves. Maybe not all, but some. Time to watch the news but last I saw, here in PSL we were just looking at rain

Good Luck Everyone!!!

25 years ago today---I 'acquired' my first plumeria (that I knew NOTHING about ...) that I 'found' in my backyard after Hurricane Alicia (Cat 3 - 1983)came through!!! It was a huge branch of someone's tree that was knocked off during the storm---someone that left the 'leaves on' but were totally 'shredded' by the time it landed in our yard!

Yes--take off those leaves if you can!!!

The storm is pretty nasty right now, and I am on the east coast. Can imagine (well) what its like on the west side. Pulled most leaves from the in-ground and large potted plants. The rest are in the garage with my cuttings and seeds. Glad I decided to pull the leaves. Most plants are taking a beating. One of my Aztec Golds is a very fast grower, and this time of year, has a lot of long tender branches. In the past, I have had branches bend completely over under the weight of leaves, blooms and rain, so that the tips point to the ground. I ended up cutting off all of those branches... twice. Friends and neighbors all have AG plants now! Anyhow, I wanted to avoid this situation... or worse, so off came the leaves late yesterday. So far, so good. I am looking forward to a great show from this tree, in the next few weeks, because of all the inflos.

Have been watching the news, sure hope you will still be ok.. Glad you did take off your leaves. Yes..hopes for great blooms. How do you protect your home? Do you have shutters that come down? curious.

I have never been in that high wind, must be very frightening.. Good luck to you and all in Florida.

This wasn't windy enough to be scary... not in Palm Beach anyway. I wonder how this thread's originator, Caroles Jungle, made out, over on the west coast. I am sure that she got the brunt of this storm, and I have been thinking about her. Over here, I am glad that I pulled leaves. 2 days of, even the winds we had (maybe 40 mph), are very rough on plants. Just ask my bananas and hibiscus!

We did not board up for this one. Normally I use plywood over every opening. I am now looking at a kevlar screen material that can stand 270 mph impacts. The great thing about this material, is that it can be installed from just under the roof line, down to the ground, a few feet from the house. I would do this around my Florida room, which is all windows, and the front entrance to the house. I would actually be able to move all my potted plants against the house, behind the screen. No more dragging everything to the garage, where things inevitably get damaged, because they are packed so tight. And because it is a screen, it lets light in.

For now, let's keep in mind that alot of folks are still in the path of this storm. Strengthening is possible as it gets out into the Atlantic. Hope all stay safe.

I have 4 - 2 year old Plumerias and one that had bent to an odd angle (about 30 degrees over) broke today :( Can any of it be saved and if so, how?????

Wow, I wish I had read this before the storm. I had one plumeria split right down the middle. It had 2 main stems about 3 feet long each. I made a flat straight cut on them to remove them and left a stub in the ground about 4 inches tall. Will it resprout? Should I pull all leaves and inflos off the two stems while end is healing over? Just got my first plumerias last year so am new to this.
