Almost given up for dead

I lost about half my plumie collection when I had a power outage in the GH last winter. I was trying to salvage what I could. One plant only had a couple inches of healthy stem so I left it to see what would happen and two new branches grew from just about soil level (bottom). I just found another pot that had what I thought was a completely dead plumie with a tiny branch growing from below the soil (top) . It looks pretty pathetic and I don't know if it will continue to grow but it definitely surprised me. The names had been written on the stems so I have no idea what varieties these are.

That's wonderful! Nature is so surprising and plants want so much to survive! I had this happen to me with Penelope, baby rose that I had given up on. I called her "Lazarus rising from the dead" and it seems to be like that with your plumeria! Congratulations!

Hi Karen - Congratulations on your survivor. Your first photo brings back horrible memory for me. But with encouragements from GW Plumeria friends, I didn't give up and look at my little island today. Many of the dead stump produced at least 3 or more branches. And those branch then split yet again.

Usually, PLs are divided instead of repotted, but either can be done. First, your tree is not going to die if you can purge your thought process of the idea wilting means the plant needs more water. Have faith in the idea that plants in a damp/moist medium will always be able to take up water more efficiently than plants in a wet/soggy medium. The recovery will take 1 of 3 paths. 1) New growth will stop and the leaves will remain in a wilted condition for a period of time until enough new roots are generated to meet the top's moisture needs, Soon after the plant regains turgidity (stops wilting) it will resume growth. 2) Many leaves will die due to the fact a lesser volume of roots isn't going to be able to meet the moisture demands of the pot, which will cause the plant to literally wall off the leaves to prevent further moisture loss, or 3) you could remove at least half of the existing leaves to easy the o/a demand for water. If you do that, concentrate on removing the oldest leaves. If you look very carefully. You'll see the younger leaves are attached to the crown above or closer to the center than attachment point of older leaves. Resume fertilizing when you see the plant pushing new growth. Al

Mine was extraordinarily late in leafing out this year (like within the last two weeks) and I'm in a warmer zone than you. This particular tree has also been known to lose it's first leaves to late hard freezes.Mine is not in the best location since it sits in a low point where mists and fogs gather and is prone to frosts. If yours is small enough to check the viability of some of the finer branches, do so to see if they're still green under the bark. I have had winter damage this year that I have NEVER seen before on my trees and there are one or two I am still playing a waiting game on before I assume they're goners.

cjax, not black brown worm poop, worms wouldn't climb your plants - that's caterpillar frass (poop). I don't know how many plants you are describing, or how many caterpillars (amazing the damage a very few or even one or two can make), it may be possible to hand pick and destroy them. Just after dark with a flashlight could be your best timing, and its an excellent exercise to see what's going on in your garden first hand anyway :) Take your oldest pruners or pair of old all purpose scissors out with you, snip any in half. Depending on what caterpillar and the scope of the infestation, BT could be used. Bacillus thuringiensis or Bt is a naturally occurring soil bacterium. When applied to plants, is harmless to humans but lethal to caterpillars. Be sure to choose one labeled specifically for fighting caterpillars. FYI - Aphids aren't 'chewers' and don't make holes. They are sucking insects and easily visible on leaf undersides even in the daytime. You could conceivably have some slug or snail damage to your strawberries, there could easily be more than one pest in your garden being attracted to different plants. If you will go out at night and look, you will know :) If you take a spray bottle of approx 1/4 household ammonia to 3/4s water along with your pruners and spritz the slugs if found, they are dead in a heartbeat and the ammonia water won't hurt your foliage.

OMG I remember pics from when you first planted the plumie island! I can't believe how much they've grown. It looks like you have a number of plants in bloom. Very nice.

Thanks Karyn and Brighty. There are so many inflos in the island it's unbelievable. The ones that could not be saved, I dug out. And into the hole went a surprise plumie. Some I was able to identify and the others are unknown that produces beautiful blooms.

Hi KarenB - thank you! Because of the freeze, I've become really hooked on roses...and so my husband gave up his section of the yard for growing grass. Boy, I didn't realize dead heading is such a chore.
