Hi Tyler. Two years ago my husband was hauling my variegated Yucca indoors. The largest crown from hit the doorway and broke. I didn't want to discard. I first showered the crown. Next I prepared a shallow pot using well-draining soil. Before inserting crown in soil, I cut a little of the stem that was torn off, to even out. Honestly, I can't tell you how long it took to root, but because foliage hadn't died or discolored, I figured something was happening. I left the crown in the shallow pot throughout fall, winter, and part of spring, giving infrequent watering. It was placed about 5' from a south window, (which equals medium/low light here in IL.) The following spring, I removed plant from the shallow container then potted in the same 17" container w/mom. I hope you're following me. :) The stuff you're talking about could be wax..wax is used to transport D. fragrans canes so they don't dry out when shipped to US. The wax might be used for Yuccas too, but I'm not sure. It's usually red in color. Yuccas are slow-growing, some much slower than others. Be patient..lol. Before you know it, you'll have a huge plant..after it gets 'x' tall, hits the ceiling, you'll want to know what to do next...lol. What size is its pot? You can repot, toss most of old soil and add fresh soil, or simply top new soil on old, water and give a dose of fertilizer. Your south window sounds perfect. Yuccas are sun-lovers. 31 floors up, in an unobstructed window, that IS a sunny spot. If you decide to root your yucca crowns, you'll need two pots. Shallow containers are best to root, but it's up to you. Good luck, Toni

Here's an update after two and a half years. During the repot I discovered that there were hardly any roots on the two big trunks. I decided to discard them and start again from cuttings. In the pictures above you can see a couple of starts down near the base of one trunk. I cut these away and potted them separately. Here they are today, back in the same pot: These have been repotted each year, mainly because I used gritty mix for the original repot in July 2015, but it was my first time using it and I got scared off due to watering issues, and repotted everything into 5-1-1 in 2016. After reading more posts on this forum I decided to give it another try, so this year the yuccas and some rubber plants went back into gritty. I'm hoping they can remain in these pots for a couple of more years at least. I've got them outside this afternoon for a bit of sun while watering. Temp is 66 today and this will probably be the last time outside until May.

Hurricane Irma had her way with some of the fronds and the plants below were a little battered, too. The 2 large Agave desmettiana behind the Yuccas bloomed a while back, so we just pulled them out and didn't leave a pup behind. (another couple of plants that were not in optimal places!) I cut back the Graptosedum California Sunset and am rooting tops and leaves. There are some babies in among the rocks. I removed a lot of tattered leaves from the Yucca, mostly near the bottom. The bench hasn't changed, so you can use that for size comparison. Looks a little bare right now, but I will change that. LOL
