I HAVE Blooms!! Yipee

Hi,

Oh what a neat feeling to say.. I have blooms! Celadine I planted in the ground this spring, some freezing has bloomed in its glory. Has a big inflo more to come and a new one coming.. This looks different that the other one I tried to ID

The Second one in bloom is Gardena or Red-White or Gardenia..was gone this weekend out of STate, look what happened..Sooo fragrant. This is so rare for me to have blooms!

I have a mystery cutting from Maui Gardens that has a inflo, sure hope it blooms..Wanted to share.

Thanks, paparoseman, I'm putting RdV in morning sun w/mostly dappled shade the rest of the day, will prefer if it is darker. I think you are probably right about this. First spring to bloom so may be different in time, but mine has a little bigger blooms, darker, just not so many as the parent plant. Plus it suckers which will be good for this one & where I put it, plus I think it's moving to where it will get more sun, wish I'd planted it out further right on the edge of the drop off w/limestone blocks. If the parent suckered, it probably got mowed by the person who cares for the lawn where I got it. It's been whacked down to the point you would hardly recognize it this year which is a shame and weeds growing through it.

jkunkel, it wasn't quite as cold last night as it has been . About 48 but that puts a chill on the buds. In fact, we have been sleeping under a comforter. We are asleep by the time it gets cold in the house and is warming up by the time we get up. I am hoping for the best. A good rain would help I think. lisaday, look at Tinkers pics. Someone has a LNS that looks like mine. I have a lot of yellow with the pink in mine. It may have something to do with the climate. That pic was taken in Fl at my sisters. Of course, mine looks the same but if you go north, it may not be quite so bright. I bought mine from a daylily friend who has passed away. I bought a lot from her and am still trying to find the correct names for most of them. Year before last, I found the Brocaded Gown name. I had that one for several year until on of our GW friends named it for me. Since he is DEEP into dls and knows more about them than most, I trust his judgement. Now if he could just come here and name the rest..LOL. I have promised a trade with Jill but haven't heard from her yet. I can find a fan or to to trade with you if you are interested.....Ellie

Thanks you all! Yep, the $500 is mostly gone. I needed a bigger wood stove for the greenhouse to keep the temps up and I needed some more firewood and some computer work done. I'll tell you something funny about this contest though. I had gotten hacked into, had some trojans put on my desktop from some very mean people and after all that, when they called and told me I won, I thought it was whoever had hacked into my puter making a prank call. I didn't believe it until the mag was sent and I actually saw it in print! LOL Oh, and I got hacked again last night but I learned how to use the tools in Norton. Did you know that the intruder blocker also gives you a log file so that you can report the person that does it? Yep, my hacker was from Reston, VA. And it stated plainly right on there that the computer was stationary (not portable). Told me who's server they went through ect, ect. I think that is cool. So, anywho, I am as happy as a pig in a pile of potato peelings. I will remember that about the seeds. How do you normally write articles? Do you have an idea and find the mag that will publish it or do you find one that is sort of up your alley personality-wise and try to write for their readership? That is where I've always had a problem. When you submit photos, are they digital or do you submit old fashioned paper copies? I am interested in writing an article for Backwoods Home. They ask for photos or transparencies. All I have is this rinky dink digital I bought at Walmart. I would really like to submit something that would be up to par of their regular contributors but I really don't know what expectations they have. Or am I just trying to tell myself I'm not up to par?

Not adequately established: Some iris cultivars need a year or more to fully establish in their new locations before blooming. If you relocate them frequently, they may never become well enough established to bloom. Plant irises far enough apart to allow for several years' growth before requiring division. Inadequate sun: Bearded irises need at least 6 hrs of direct sun a day to bloom well. Nutrient deficiencies: Consider having a soil test run to make sure your soil provides all necessary plant nutrients in appropriate amounts and fertilize according to the recommendations returned with the soil analysis. Soil that has been growing irises for many years without amendments or fertilization is probably nutritionally depleted. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers. If bearded irises are fed high-nitrogen fertilizers, they may grow lush foliage with little or no bloom. Inappropriate watering: Bearded irises might not bloom well if they experience periods of extended drought, though the plants themselves are quite drought-tolerant. Conversely, bearded irises that are overwatered are often susceptible to bacterial soft rot and fungal leaf spot infections. If you provide supplemental water, water deeply no more than once a week. Soaker hoses are preferable to overhead watering to avoid spreading leaf diseases from plant to plant. Planted too deeply: Bearded iris rhizomes should be planted so the tops of the rhizomes are at or slightly below the soil surface. If planted too deeply, bearded irises will grow leaves but may not flower. Be careful, also, not to allow mulch to cover the rhizomes. Make sure any mulch is pushed away from the rhizomes. Overcrowding: Overcrowded clumps often quit blooming until they are divided, OR irises closely planted with other plants may not bloom well (or at all) if they are struggling to compete for sunlight, water, and soil nutrients. Weeds: There are certain weeds and grasses that are so aggressive they can inhibit the performance or even survival of plants they invade (Canada thistle being one of them). Keep the weeds and grasses away from your irises. Ill health: Irises that are diseased or under insect attack may not be able to bloom until the problem is eliminated. Late freezes: Killing freezes that are severe enough to damage iris foliage within six to eight weeks prior to normal bloom can abort developing stalks even if the stalks are not yet showing above the foliage. Immature rhizome: Rhizomes will not bloom until they are mature. If you have planted smaller rzs, you probably need only wait for them to grow a bit before they'll bloom. Irregular bloomer: All irises are not created equal. While some irises may bloom very regularly in your garden once established, others may never do any better than blooming once every several years ... or perhaps never blooming at all. The same cultivars that bloom beautifully and reliably for a neighbor down the road or a friend across the country may do nothing more than sulk in your own garden. The only way to discover which irises will perform best for you is to keep trying different cultivars, growing them properly, and replacing those that don't meet expectations within 2-3 years after planting. Been anxious for Celadine to bloom, cause it did freeze, is doing so well and really growing, yes such fragrant pretty blooms. Another inflo coming.

Hi Plumeriastix, thanks on the back yard. AS it shows in the picture, I have a plumie garden to the left, east/south sun. In the middle is shade. On the right side is WEst sun. So have to be careful where I put things. Am so pleased my plumeria is coming out of the freeze, growing, so far..am happy with all the growth. I have a few more I hope bloom. SEcond year for me, this is new.

Hi Kasie,
you helped me figure out if my odd plumeria was a real plumeria..had gray branches, from a center cut. Well its no more, woke up this morning..looking at my babies. There is was on its side, one branch broke off and the long branch bent sideways. Apparently squirrels hit the plant. Had to cut both the branches off, course broke right up to the trunk. So now have just a short center cut..am so sad it happened. Was a pure white that just glistens.

Hi KarenB of So. Calif. - I'm sorry to hear about your plumeria. Just start over with the 2 side shoots that was cut off. Cut the leaves off and stick it in your favorite potting media and keep it out of the hot, hot sun. Or you can let it callus then plant it. Which ever works for you Karen. I do this all the time. Your main plant will eventually produce more branches. You must have patience...easy to say right :) I'll take a photo tomorrow of my "intensive care" rooting section.

well you helped the ID, It was growing so well, leaves getting so wide. dern. Yes, will plant one of the branches, but the other one is so small, doubt it will make it. The main trunk, in its pot, is in the corner in my plumie garden. Will keep a watch for new growth.

We feed the squirrels and have bird feeders, my husbands pleasure, mine too.. I won't stop it, he enjoys this. Most of my plumies in pots have chicken wire over the top of the pot, or redwood chips to protect them. Buttt nothing protects jumping on! Thats what happened. I hope no more are targets!!! This kind of shocked me, and boy hurt. Yes love to see your "intensive care" rooting section!
Am letting the cuttings dry, will watch the main plant..dern.. thanks for your comments.

Hi KarenB of So. Calif. - can I send my squirrels to you? The pictures didn't come out so well. My dear friend Plumie Jackie of Anaheim taught me to give all the little guys a chance.

I even tinkered with the inflo that was broken off during one of our high wind last year. Out of 4, one made it as you can see. So KarenB, give your plumie a chance.

Wow Kasie, you planted an inflo and now its growing! That's amazing.

How old are your seedlings? I envy you having a green house. My seedlings are going to have to take over the dining room over the winter.

How are your front yard plumies doing? Are they still hanging on?

Hi Brighty - where the leaves are growing now, I saw a very, very small dark dot. I didn't know what it was at the time. The inflo had been rooting in water for a very long time because I was enjoying the blooms. The stems never went mushy and some started producing roots, so I just change the water.

The seedlings were started on June 11 and June 22. So far about 150 of them...and 65 more that needs to be planted. Yikes, what have I done?? And thank you for asking about my little island. Many have put on new growth and I only had to replant 12.

Sorry about the squirrel damage to the center cut plant. At least you have squirrels instead of rats! In much of Southern California rats have replaced squirrels.

It broke my heart seeing that one plumie busted. I haven't had that happen, have read many stories on here of dogs, squirrels, wind..etc wrecking plants. Never thought it would happen..but. sad was a pure white that glistened in the light, with a orange or yellow center..dern.

Rats, I haven't seen any..except one! which freaked me out. Saw one coming up through my block wall, saw his head come up, screamed for my husband..and quickly put a brick there. Probably around, just do not want to see any. Squirrels do enjoy them and their running around until they destroy. then not so cute.

OOOOh thanks on putting on the article on larve on plants. I left the ugly bugs funny things on my plants. I have a crop of lady bugs all over my plants..so thanks for that thumbs up. How are your plants? was in Phoenix this weekend, was so hot..thought of you.

thanks so much for showing the pictures in you green house. very very interesting. I have not tried that. You have a lot of small ones growing, that is so neat. Staring an inflo, I'll be darn, odd trunk growth.

yes, will try and start the one branch is very small in dia. but will try. Other broke. Will keep an eye on the center growth plant, with roots. Love your green house, would like to get one, but we have such high heat in the summer, would cook. I don't know anything about growing things in a green house.
