Comments (21)I got a Red E Ventricosum banana late this spring. It did well in a pot getting quite large. About July I put it in the ground and did okay for awhile then started growing backwards (declining).. its pretty small right now..it really does dislike the hotter night temps as Eric (a previous poster) mentioned. I have grown both the green and red ones from seed in pots in S. Louisiana and they did quite well. They can get huge when they are happy. I'm going to put mine back in a pot again and see if it improves now that the nights are cooling off and it seems to be perking up a little. I think it takes the humidity better in a pot, based on my experiences. I also think they appreciate a little shade in the hottest part of the day here. I also grew these in AZ with basically no humidity and way above 100F temps during the summer they definitely hated that but survived with some shade and a misting system I had set up for my tropicals. My two Zebrina bananas are doing quite well, currently, in the ground and are beautiful. I've killed (or the winter, I should say, killed) 2 Siam Ruby bananas here but that was before I had my greenhouse techniques refined lol. ~Sjn...See MoreSeed from bought bananas
Comments (17)Ibartoo, the shell needs to be removed from the Mango and placed about half way into the soil then kept watered, not all will sprout. It will work much better if the shell has started to split and the seed has a small root started. Take a knife and feel along the edge of the more rounded side to find the gap where you can spit the shell off the seed. Do not expect to get any good fruit. From what I have read they say it will be sour and bitter. I have a tree growing in my backyard, but it has frozen twice all the way to the ground here in the Houston area. The root stock has to be at least 8 years old but still has never even bloomed let alone put on any fruit. But my wife loves the tree so I have never cut it down so far....See MoreAbilene Lowes bananas half price today (plus information request)
Comments (1)If the seed has already matured and dropped to the ground, they should just need cleaned of the skin and and scrub the mucilage of the seed coat. AN easy way I found to do palm seeds is to use clear plastic quart sealable baggies and then use a mix of peat and perlite at 50/50 ratio and moisten the media and mix the seed into the baggie. I store in a warm 75-85 degree area and check weekly for moisture and mold/mildew. If you see mildew open baggie and air it for a few days. It will take a month to even 3 months for the seed to germinate. This is why this technique works so well. I did several varieties of palm seed in Hawaii this way and had hundreds to sell after growing them out over a several year period. Let me know if you have any questions and I will see if I can help. Good Luck and Happy Growing David P.S. Basjoo banana is a very cold hardy type to look for ( not dwarf but hardy. I would love to come across some dwarf windmill myself. If I see any I will try and remember and post it on this forum....See Moremcgyvr2009i
