1st time growing hot peppers

Hi All,

I started a few Ghost, Habanero, & Green Chilli, seeds back on 01-16-14, initially in 5oz cups, grown under a florescent shop light for 3 months in my garage, for this period the plants did not grow much, however over the last 3 months they have taken off, since they have been repotted in larger containers.

They are almost 6 months old, about 12" tall, and have all started to set fruit, take a look at the pics and let me know what up think.

I plan on moving these to 5 Gal containers later on this months.

Here's what I've done w/great success. I am a florist & any florist knows what a "procona" is. It is a fairly large plastic container in either black, white or pink in which you receive wet cut flowers. I brought several black ones home & drilled 6-8 holes in the bottom of each. I filled w/approp soil & planted one tomato plant per bucket/procona. I also place bricks under them so they get approp ventitlation. They have flourished year after year! Mine are in full sun & I don't have to deal w/weeding. My suggestion is that any of you who want to plant veg in containers go to your local florist & ask if they have any they want to get rid of & I'm sure they will. Ask for "the black buckets in which you receive your wet cut flowers." Our shop cannot keep up w/giving them away! They are also good for storage but for planting veggies, the black are great! At least they have been for me. I have also planted many annuals in them which will overflow & cover the container.

I would say they are hotter than is optimal. Being on the floor which is even hotter could be pushing them too far. Getting them raised off the floor sounds like a good idea. I just looked at your weather forecast (Bend, OR) and it looks like a great stretch of weather for peppers with lots of sun and low 80's to upper 70's for highs although it is going to be pretty cool nights in the mid to upper 40's. I think maybe they will start to take off in the next few weeks. My super hots have been doing really well the last few weeks and we have been mid 80's and some 90's. But our nights don't seem to cool of nearly as much as yours. We typically stay in the lower 60's at night this time of year. Bruce

Azura, last year was my first real veggie garden, and I learned a lot. There were successes and failures, but I enjoyed it so much. Skybird is right about you wanting to make it bigger next year. I created a separate bed for the herbs this year, just so I could plant more veggies in veggie garden. So far, I planted onion sets and peas (twice). I also have five kinds of lettuce, and broccoli sprouts that were wintersown, that I might plant out as soon as the crazy winds die down. Plus there are tomatoes and peppers in my kitchen windowsill, and tomatoes that were wintersown but haven't germinated yet. I'm also direct sowing carrots maybe this week, but the cucumbers, canteloupes, and beans won't get planted for another month or so. My goal is for as much variety as possible, even if it means just one or two plants of each - 5 kinds of beans, 4 kinds of canteloupe, 5 kinds of carrots, 4 kinds of cukes, 7 kinds of peppers, and as many different tomatoes as I can cram into the space that's left, and the Earthbox I just bought. I'd rather have too many plants and have to give some away, than to realize I have empty space in the garden, and not enough time to start something else before the end of the season. when a pod fully ripens, take a pic, and we'll be far more able to tell you what it is. it's unfortunate that you didn't get what you wanted to grow, but if the pods are tasty (and hot) it wasn't a total loss. write it off as a learning experience. it may well be a bhut hybrid, some of the pods look like they might have some bhut somewhere in their lineage, but they also look like there's some hab in there, but they're awful long and skinny for either of those varieties. I feel bad for your situation, so if you PM me your address I'll send you seeds (for free) that will definitely grow into a bhut (I know because they come from my plants that are definitely bhuts), as well as some other tasty superhots that in my opinion are better tasting than the bhut, and well worth growing. almost all of my seeds were sent to me for free by people on here, and postage is only a dollar.

they look great, and i agree (from what i can tell from the picture) they are ready to be transplanted into larger containers.

But they also need to be transplanted asap, not a few weeks from now ;-)

I agree with sjetski. It is a little hard to tell from those photos but it looks like those plants are still in seedling trays. They should be in at least 4" pots by now. And if you are in Z10, then your climate should enable you to transplant them to 5 gallon buckets now which I would do. They are good looking plants though.

Do Carolina Reapers grow better in the ground or in containers?

Hi All, thanks for all of the feedback, sorry I was not able to reply sooner, but the demands of life, has been demanding.

I have not posted on this site for over the past 8 years :(, and have since moved from Miami, FL, and relocated to Katy, TX. so that would be zone 8

esox07 - Good catch, yes they are currently in 4" growing trays.

Earlier today I was only able to repot 2 of my Ghost peppers, hopefully I will get to the rest, later on this week.

Meg_MN - Welcome, the quality of your soil will determine how well your plant will grow.

Update - Since repotting my Ghost Pepper in 5 Gal HD buckets, I,ve seen tremendous growth, and now that the temps is a bit cooler in Houston, I am finally getting some nice looking peppers on all 4 of my plants, here are a few pics taken earlier today.

Can someone please advise whats the lowest nighttime temp these GP can survive

Well, it looks like you have pepper growing down to a science now. Nice job.
You plants will likely survive any thing above freezing but if you want them to keep producing, you should never let them go below 40 and preferably 50 degrees. If they get down into the 40's they will slow down in growth. If they start seeing temps in the thirties, they will probably shut down altogether and go into a semi dormant state, lose foliage and peppers and if they get into the lower 30's you could kill or permanently damage portions of the plants. Since you have them in buckets, you should be able to get them into a garage at night if your temps dip too far.. But in zone 10, I expect that will be pretty uncommon.

Did you join the swap so you can try out some new chilis for next year.
