new garden: how to fix the dirt?

hi,

i'm moving to a new house and i'd like to prepare the garden. i don't have the time nor energy to build a raised bed, so i'd just like to amend the soil.

i also don't have the time or energy to test the soil, i just know that it needs to be amended. what do you recommend i do? what kind of soil amendment should i buy, and how much should i buy per sq foot?

Frankly I think building a raised bed is easier than ammending soil, but I live in Clay Soil-ville, California.

When we moved into our house I started with bags of Gold Rush bought at the nurseries. Wasn't the cheapest route because I could have had stuff delivered on my driveway, but it was the easiest.

Another good product that I use now is Paydirt, bought at same nursery.

How much you buy depends on the size of your garden and how deep you are wanting to dig down based on the current condition of your soil. The bags will list what the coverage is.

It has taken several years for the soil to improve consistently. Good luck!

I would agree with Julie. I took the lasagna/raised bed route to start my garden. The first year I used the square foot garden mix (1/3 peat moss, 1/3 vermiculite, 1/3 compost) which can be spendy. Then I expanded and used the garden soil, compost, fall leaves and grass clippings. I've also sprinkled wood ashes for added potassium. (Bone meal is good for phosphorous, blood meal or alfalfa meal for nitrogen).

The book "Mini-Farming" has a nice section on soil ammendments and amounts to add.

All of the rain we've had in the Bay Area has really encouraged weed growth. Wait until the ground dries out a bit and there is no rain forecast. Then on a day without wind, spray the weeds with Round-up per the directions on the bottle. Round-up will kill most plants, so be very careful not to let it blow onto anything you want to keep. If the ground is still wet in the root area, you may need to spray more than once. Directions will be included on the bottle of Round-up. I am a first year gardener. I grew up on a 160 acre farm supplemented with huge vegetable gardens. The gardens were beautiful and I helped tend them, as directed, but as a child had no interest. I had more important things to do. My parents had an interest because they needed to feed a family of six on the income of subsistence farmers. Fast forward 33 years and gardening is my new obsession. I referenced this board for hours to figure out what was happening almost on a daily basis. I know I would have been much less successful had it not been for the wisdom and willingness of people to share. Here is a list of goals I had in the middle of this past May: - get a garden in the ground - try to do something right to produce something - learn, learn, learn. - stay organic if possible. Biggest lessons learned: - plant at the right time for my zone. I grew up in Ky, a zone 6 I believe, and now live in zone 8, almost 9 because we are right on the coast. In zone 6, you live and die by the frost dates. Here the "ender" of the season is a mixture of heat and bugs. - don't crowd the plants. The viners like cukes and melons need a lot more space than the 8 foot diameter requirements specified on the packets. - I think I could have pruned more and been ahead. Planting in May instead of March, like I was supposed to, was asking for powdery mildew due to the crowding and the high humidity here. I learned a lot in my little 14 by 20 foot space. I produced 37 pounds and it's still going. It will be like a jungle when I get back, since I am away on a two week work trip. The three biggest producers were cucumbers, tomatoes, and green bell peppers. I also interplanted with flowers like Zinnias and Cosmos, and these also did very well. I have a 14 by 22 plot next to the existing undergoing solarization, and about 80 seedlings in the starting trays. I am encouraged and plan to start my fall garden when I get home. There will be broccoli, cauliflower, and lots of lettuce. I also plan to start some more yellow crook neck squash. It and all zucchini were destroyed by SVBs in the summer garden. I did however, remove and destroy about 15 of SVBs, so I did my part in removing them from the population. I get a lot of information and inspiration from this board. Thank you. And right now, it lets me be a "virtual" gardener since I am away from home.

As you can see, every person has different opinions. I don't dig, use organics heavily, and worship Ruth Stout. A friend happily uses 50-50 composted dairy manure and sand and I grow stuff in nearly 100% once-was-horse-manure, and it works well for me. I can get 3 cubic yards of horse manure/bedding mixture onto my pickup truck and it's free, which is also important to me. The last load I got had a yard given to a neighbor, a yard put in a wire bin for later, and a yard dumped into a fresh empty bed that I'll probably be able to plant food in this Fall. No dirt. No clay. No digging-in. No composting. It's all part of my being lazy, for sure. A back can only take so much abuse in one lifetime and so "the higher the better" is a good way to plan. I've seen concrete block beds that are perhaps four feet high and my first "raised" bed here in the desert was about 3 inches high. I can't grow carrots since every single one (ever!) has been donated shortly after birth to the local critter food supply. Potatoes, however, will tend to grow out of the surface, so leave room for a little extra mulch to shade the tubers from the sunlight.

I use bark as mulch in raised beds with no problems, however, when you apply it can make all the difference. I don't put it on until it starts to heat up and I need to water alot. If you put it on in the spring then the ground stays cooler and wetter and the plants don't grow as fast. Cooler and wetter is a good thing in the summer but not in the spring. Also don't mix the bark mulch with the soil. If you need to work the soil, then pull it back. Bark mulch does provide home for pill bugs and such but if you don't apply it until the plants are strong then the insects won't bother them.

Jenny- Where do you live? Do you have clay soil? If so, don't do anything until it dries out a bit. If you pick up a bit of soil and squeeze it...does it make a ball? That's clay.

We have clay and I've found the best thing is lots of aged horse manure...but I have horses. I'm sure any of these recommended amendments will be a big improvement to your soil. Best of luck with your new garden! :)

hi guys,
thanks for the postings. i don't know if its clay, i'll go check and see. but what i don't get is, what if i just dig a big hole and throw away all the dirt, 3 feet into the ground? i'll just throw out all the bad dirt and put high quality soil in there. then its essentially like a raised bed, right? there is no mixing/or improving of the soil since i'm just throwing it out.

Well, it's your garden and you can start it anyway you like. :)
But, I don't like digging. And, digging down 3 ft sounds like major back-breaking work to me. Just build up good soil on top and voila, raised bed.

You can dig down 3 feet, and find a place to trash all that dirt... or you can build up 6 inches or even a foot.

Even with a rose in a five gallon container i haven't dug down that far. But that's because I have clay. I couldn't if I tried.

Can you give us a better idea of your soil conditions or area? Also what kinds of things do you want to plant?

Luv, IF you have clay soil and dig the hole and pour in a good soil mix, you will essentially be building yourself an in-ground clay pot. Plant roots will be contained inside the holes and, here's the bad part, rain and water will collect and not drain, basically drowning your plants. Honest and truly, if you're willing to dig down three feet, you have plenty of energy to do the job right.

For my clay soil (you still haven't told us what you have), I lay 4 to 6 inches of organic material (compost, chopped leaves, manure, peat moss, etc.: any of these or any combination of these) over the top of the area I want to garden in. Then, I use a shovel to turn it and break it in about a foot deep (or you could till). Then wait two weeks to plant. In those two weeks, soil organisms will move in and break the soil down beautifully.

If, by chance, you have grass and weeds growing in the area you want to use, you will need to kill out the growth. If I were you, I would cover the entire area with a ten sheet layer of newspaper or cardboard plus a foot or so of organic material. Then, just let it sit there for this year's summer growing season. You're going to be busy unpacking and settling in from your move anyway. By fall, you'll have beautiful, effortless garden soil ready to receive a fall/winter garden.

hi guys,
thanks for all the feedback. i haven't had a chance to go to the house to see what kind of dirt it is, but you've convinced me to build a raised bed! i got a quote on raised beds for $1k to $4k.

now i just have to figure out what kind of dirt to fill it with.
