Wrinkled Leaves (photos included)

I had originally posted this topic about a week ago, but I was unable to upload pictures until today. If anyone could offer advice I'd appreciate it. So basically three of my plumeria have wrinkled leaves that are shown in the link below. At first I thought it was just caused by our June gloom, but then when the weather started to heat up the problem persisted. I sprayed the yard with a systemic pesticide (2x) and it hasn't really done much. I've shown 2 of the plants in these photos, I assume its the same problem but I'm not positive. If some one could give me a diagnosis and a treatment I would appreciate it.

I'll reply with a couple of questions. What was the pesticide used and what time of day was it applied. Did you have a mite problem when you decided to use the pesticide? And where do you live. The last question doesn't really have anything to do with the wrinkled leaves, just curious.

John- I am not sure but it looks like a spider mite damage. I have not had this problem so I am not sure of a solution. You might call Chris Roy at Orange County Farm Supply or take by a leaf to show him. Bill

Orchid126 brings up great points. Lemme add some of my personal experience as well. The bark chips and crunchy white stuff (probably perlite or vermaculite) holds "dampness" not water but this is good for most orchid roots. Watering every day or every other day is probably too much for this type of media. Especially right after re-potting, you'll want to keep the media on the drier side for a week or 2 to stop/prevent rot. I grow my phals in LECA in unglazed clay pots (which holds even less water than your mix) in zone 6 and I only water them every 4-5 days, sometimes I'll stretch it to a week when it's been rainy for a couple of days. When you say "clay orchid pot" do you mean it's one of those pots that have holes all over it? Are the holes big enough for the bark and perlite to fall through? Are you sure no new roots have rotted? I don't know if you want to do this or have already done this but personally, I would take it out and check the roots just in case. Also what kind of light is your orchid getting? Is it on a windowsill or is it getting artificial light? And for how long does it get the light? If its natural light, is it morning light, afternoon or late afternoon light. And do you fertilize it? If so, what are the N-P-K ratios and how often do you apply it, and at what rates? I know it's a lot of questions, but I just wanna cover all the bases so that fellow members can naorrow in on what's going on with your phal.

The particular tree that I saw was growing in the middle of a 10 acre vacant field. The limbs started about 5 feet up the trunk and came out around the tree as far as the tree was tall. The tree was probably 40 feet tall when I saw it, and the trunk was ~ 2 ft. diameter. The leaves were so thick on the tree that it looked like a giant shrub from the distance. I wish I had taken a picture of the tree. It was growing in Mansfield, TX, so I might stop by there the next time I am that direction.

That's definitely a bag worm. Usually I find them on my Aroborvitaes and Junipers, but a few can end up on other plants as well. They can really do some damage if left unattended and are particularly hard to treat on tall evergreens. Every one of the bags left behind can contain as many as 200 eggs which will be ready to infest your plants again next year. They usually begin to feed and form bags around the first of June in my area of NE OK., so be on the lookout next year about this time. If you can catch them when they first appear BT works as well as anything and won't harm beneficials. You will need to spray more then once to catch new hatchlings. Make sure the BT is fresh. We weren't having much luck with BT and discovered there's a world of difference between fresh and old. Use a spreader sticker. Some people not familiar with our area may not understand just how hot AND humid it is now. So be careful when you spray. You need to spray ideally when the temperature is 85 or below and make sure that in this drought your plants are fully hydrated before you do spray. I've burned plants spraying when it was too hot. Best time of course is in the cool of the morning...Last year we had a major infestation on our Arborvitae and sprayed 3 times with frest BT. This year (fingers crossed) I haven't seen any hatchlings - yet. ........Maryl

Leaf curling/distortion usually indicates a deficit of Calcium and Magnesium... Get your hands on Dolomite Lime pellets (which has both Calcium and Magnesium)... Use about a Tablespoon or less either dissolved in water (then watered into soil) or sprinkled around the soil (then watered). If you can't get that, you can also use Epsom Salt to supply Magnesium, sprinkle half a Table Spoon around the base of the plant and water, then dissolve 1 Table Spoon in a gallon of water (distilled suggested) and spray on the top and bottom of the entire plant (in the morning or before night, NOT in the middle of the day/sun). Do this only every 2 weeks, never more. Calcium is a bit harder to do, milk works, best if you get your hands on powdered milk, ground egg shells work also, but are a VERY slow release (best if added to soil at the beginning of the year). Best bet is probably Dolomite Lime, it won't mess with your soil pH so much and it should dissolve quickly in water. Hope that helps :)

Thanks for the quick response Bill, I'll take in a leaf next week. And to chimann, orthonex at 7:00pm, I assumed they were mites causing the problem, and Huntington Beach.

I had replied to your original post, explaining that I have also seen some strange leaf formations on my plants that I attributed to the cloudy, rainy weather.

After seeing your photos, that is definitely not the same thing I am experiencing. I agree that it appears to be spider mite damage.

First and most importantly you need to correctly identify that mites are present. Getting rid of them takes work but is not impossible. You should start by spraying the underside of the leaves with water several times a day for a few weeks. Mites don't like the water.

Second - your plants probably are not getting enough water to begin with. Thirsty plants have a higher concentration of sugars and nutrients in their sap, making them better targets for sucking pests like mites. With Plumeria there is a delicate balance between over and under watering. But if your soil drains very well, I suspect you may not be watering enough.

Before resorting to harsh chemical miticides, you can try using a product called Anti-stress 2000. It is an anti-desiccant that in my experience works exceptionally well to eliminate mites, and it is perfectly safe to use even on fruits and veggies. I had mites on many different plants 2 summers ago - since getting rid if them with the help of the Anti-stress, the mites have not returned, even indoors.

Thanks xerophyte, I'll give it a try. I think your call on not enough water is one of the problems with these two plants as they are in the driest portions of my yard.

Well, I took them into Orange County Farm Supply, and they confirmed what I originally suspected, intense June gloom wrinkled their leaves. Thanks for everyone's input, the weather's finally taking a turn for the better, so now its just a matter of waiting.
