Hot Peppers Yellow Wrinkling Leaves HELP!

So folks, the hot peppers I have planted.. are doing very weirdly this year. The leaves turning yellow and crinkling up. Not falling off, mind you. But please help !!! I have given them compost tea and that still hasnt solved the problem. They are flowering but minimal growth and foilage.

I would think the plants should have taken hold in three weeks. Assuming you see no insect pests and the plants are getting sufficient water, I guess it could be draining too fast and taking nutirents with it. I have seen that happen with really sandy soil but why aren't the beans and cukes affected. Maybe the problem is that my experience is with the dirt that came with my house and I know squat about licorice root. You might try to get some nitrogen to the plants with the recipe you mentioned or some water soluable Miracle Grow.

Hi mima, Boron (B) is slow moving inside the plant, so symptoms of deficiency show up first in the older leaves. B is much involved in cell membranes & the transport of Potassium which maintains the water equilibrium of tissue (ie: your plump varicose midrib). B uptake is less efficient in situations of: drought (many pepper growers keep 'em dry), low Nitrogen (N provides the vigorous growth that can move micro-nutrients), high Calcium & also when pH is high (may be pH rose over winter). B is very mobile in the soil & prone to leaching. It merits thorough mixing of fertilizer blend for ideal bio-availability. Deficiency symptoms for certain crops vary & most think of B problems on flower/fruit/tips of growth. As regards leaves, Boron deficiency can cause them to: distort, cup, curl at margin, pucker, deform, shrivel, crinkle, thicken, brittle, dry & appear wilted (when on young leaves begin to see yellowing &/or central leaf vein chlorosis the B deficiency is already long standing & crop yield will be less)

Which leaves are turning yellow, the young leaves or the older leaves? How long ago were the plants transplanted? The leaves that are yellow, is the yellowing between the veins or in the veins and not in between or all over? Since you did not add fertilizer to the second plot (symptomatic plot) then you probably have a N deficiency, just fertilize and you should be fine. I would also get some gympsum or calcitic lime and add that as well. The gypsum is very soluble in water and can supply Ca to the plant fast whereas the calcitic lime is relatively insoluble and will be slowly available to the plant but will offset any of the acidity that the compost has added. If you do a pH test on your own you are only going to get half of the story, so be weary of the results. The pH of the soil is affected by many things, the plant, the soil type and the organic matter. The plant and the organic matter can be measured the simple way but the soil part you need to do something different (namely an exchange) in order to get the value. The soil clay acts in the same way as your water softener, in that it has the capacity to hold a variety of positively charged ions (Ca, Mg, K, H, Na, NH4)and will exchange those with the soil solution thus making them available to the plant. themedicinalpepper.com Here is a link that might be useful: The Medicinal Pepper

Unfortunately, I don't have a way to take pictures (ancient cell phone, no camera). BUT I have noticed today that the plants that were darker in leaf colour have got a stiff spike of what I think must pass for its flowers growing up out of the very top of several of the plants -- I don't remember peppers ever doing that. I'm thinking they might not be peppers at all but weeds? I planted another set of 6 just hot peppers in a container and they have started sprouting (only 6 and only where I put the seeds :). Is it safe to say I can pull out those plants with the funky flower shoot and try again in their place some bells?

Any pests. Could be spider mites aphids thrips. Put a white paper under somes leaves and tap them see if any bugs are on the paper.

Yes chillilover!! i have some small VERY small gree little spiders... on the paper when i tapped it. What should I do .. :(

Leaf curling/distortion usually indicates a deficit of Calcium and Magnesium...

Get your hands on Dolomite Lime pellets (which has both Calcium and Magnesium)... Use about a Tablespoon or less either dissolved in water (then watered into soil) or sprinkled around the soil (then watered).

If you can't get that, you can also use Epsom Salt to supply Magnesium, sprinkle half a Table Spoon around the base of the plant and water, then dissolve 1 Table Spoon in a gallon of water (distilled suggested) and spray on the top and bottom of the entire plant (in the morning or before night, NOT in the middle of the day/sun). Do this only every 2 weeks, never more.

Calcium is a bit harder to do, milk works, best if you get your hands on powdered milk, ground egg shells work also, but are a VERY slow release (best if added to soil at the beginning of the year). Best bet is probably Dolomite Lime, it won't mess with your soil pH so much and it should dissolve quickly in water.
