I wanted to post a few pictures of our Nor'easter here in VB...

Beach road after storm...it had to be plowed to get all the sand off of the streets...

Our boat on the boat lift already at it's highest setting...my hubby starting to get worried!!!

It was 2 degrees here this morning. brrr! Sun is out, haven't been out there yet. Hope these temps are going to be short lived. The furnace has been cranking. Thanks Jane, interesting article. I am a marmalade fan, so IÃ¢ÂÂll have to look for some of these brands that have ginger in them and try it. DtD, that recipe sounds delicious. We will use a roast for pot roast once in awhile, but never thought of using it as a base for chili. So do you use beans with it or just Ã¢ÂÂchiliÃ¢ÂÂ spices? Sounds like I could use a large crockpot, too. Bill, I have been looking for new Ã¢ÂÂsoupÃ¢ÂÂ recipes, so IÃ¢ÂÂll have to try your version this winter. We had an Italian connection in our family in the past, and my Mother was a huge fan of many Italian dishes and got her sauce recipe from an old world Italian woman. We make lots of sauce and chicken cacciatore, minestrone soup and thereÃ¢ÂÂs always some of that in our freezer. Making tiny meatballs for chicken soup sounds like a new fun version. And the escarole adds a lot of nutrition. BTW, there is a new book out called Eating on the Wild Side, that reviews current studies of nutrition in food and I was surprised to learn that a can of tomato paste is chockful of nutrition and during the off season when fresh vegetables are not available from the garden, beans are one of the highest nutritional foods you can eat. And blue cornmeal if from a non GMO source, is also better nutritionally than yellow cornmeal, according to the book. So chili made with canned tomatoes and beans with blue cornbread is a very healthy meal. And the book is a very interesting read, if you donÃ¢ÂÂt find nutrition too dull. It also offers names of varieties of vegetables and fruits that are the highest in nutrition, that you can grow. As for gardening, IÃ¢ÂÂm not quite in the garden mindset yet. Later in January, IÃ¢ÂÂm sure that will change, but I am very interested in how all the Ã¢ÂÂzone pushersÃ¢ÂÂ are faring. As much of a worry as it is to have the temps dip so low, Bill, you are right, this will be a good test of which varieties are really solid zone pushers and I will be fascinated to see whose plants survive come spring. All of them, I hope!

Carol, Our drive is a very steep incline about 150 yards long and facing northeast. If I don't get it down to the blacktop rapidly the warmth turns the snow into a glacier and it stays till spring. One year, we were away on vacation, and when we returned, we could not drive up it for over 3 months. Incidently, I do park at the bottom when snow is forcast. Just long work, not really hard, as I have a small plow on my garden tractor/mower. I'm way too old to shovel that stuff much any more. George

Hello Everyone, Jo, i checked on where i purchased my Mangos..It was from Pine Island Nursery in Florida. If you were asking about where to purchase some Plumeria, I would suggest Florida Colors, Jungle Jacks and Maui Plumeria Gardens. If you wnat to but some cuttings, you can always try ebay...be careful though, i was just recently burned there. You can find some reputable sellers like one stop Aloha...i would trust them. Thank you for bringing back this thread!!! Made my day to see the change in my trees since last year!!! LE, Thank you for the nice comments...welcome to the forum!!! Artic, Seriously? You have the best ability to grow anything!!! Living in Utah, with the snow capped mountains in the background and growing Palm trees and Plumeria there? I am always in awe at what you have done and what you have growing in your area. If only the people here on this forum could see some of your pictures of your palms...They wouldnt believe it. Please for some of my Plumie friends who dont get to see what we Palm freaks see on that forum...post a few pics of your Windmill with the snow capped mountains behind...you know the pic that im talking about...its beautiful!!! As far as your Plumies, you have blooms all year ... Im glad to hear that you have some that are blooming well!! Nice to see you over hear on the Plumie side!!! Barbra, Jen is correct in that i would value those red veined seedlings. Also the red leafed seedlings.. That to me is a good indication that you will have a dark red blooming Plumeria or something deeper than the usual yellow, white ot even pink. When i see the seedlings like that that have red leaves, veining..they are keepers. I did give one of my red veined seedlings to Hunter. He is a young 13 year old who loves Plumeria and Palmtrees..How could i not share one with him!!! : ) Hunter, if you are reading this post...i would love to know how your tree is doing? Remember, it is in the Gritty Mix and likes to be watered more than in the normal soil. That mix is very fast draining. Jen, How is everything? Any rain? Thanks for helping Barbra with her questions!!! You are so nice to help with all of the questions. I have been very busy with work and it has been crazy with the weather, delays etc. Ugggg! Hello EVeryone, Hi Jen, Hi K, I do agree that the Reptibark can be expensive, I wish that i could find another source of fine bark fines locally in my area too! Sounds like the Shredded Forest works for you guys!!! Thats awesome!!! When the Fir bark goes on sale is when i pick it up. I also haven't repotted all of my trees either. Im doing this in stages myself, starting with the smaller trees and newly rooted cuttings. I couldnt imagine redoing all of my trees either. I have to many... This spring is when i will plan on rootpruning and barerooting them and introducing the older trees into the new mix. I cant wait to do this because some of the trees havnt preformed like they should. I know its because they are rootbound and are in need of some serious rootpruning. I did learn this summer while out in CA that it isnt important to repot every season like some might think. I was amazed at the size of the containers that some had their trees in and they just prune to keep them in the smaller size pots. I like the idea of having a huge tree in a container no larger than a five gallon size. I wont go any larger with my trees since i have to bring them in and out every winter. Thanks to everyone that has shared their ideas and thoughts here... This is a great way to learn and especially for those that dont like to post ...I know some just read and have questions. Thank you to those who do ask!! Whether it is here or by email. There are alot of people that do have the same questions. If i didnt ask my questions, I would still be trying to root cuttings... Great pics. You guys got it 100x worse than by us. Hope the palms didnt mind it too much (by the looks of it, alot of other trees did).

Hey Don,
As I make this post...I hear chain saws still cutting trees!!! The tide has dropped back to normal...alot of debris in the water....The pier is in sections....The barge has been towed back out to sea (with the help of two tugboats) But Sandbridge has alot of sand to move around.

We are... sadly to say.. quite use to these storms...everyone has bounced back quickly...the pictures still don't really give you a real feel from the storm...but gives you some idea of what happened here in VB

A picture is worth a 1000 words. That was a close call for many. The last sunny shot of your back yard shows real talent and gives a warm-climate feel. Hopefully, your neigbors will be inspired to plant palms.

The palms probably increase your property value for the VB area. What does your hubby think of the tropical trees, my wife is supportive and likes that its a hobby that keeps me out of trouble :)

Thanks for looking up the volik oil to use and the information on when pindos fruit and how long they fruit for. First hand info is best.

Hey Greg,

My neighbors really do enjoy the trees!! They especially like it when I put on the Christmas lights!!! Makes me feel like I'm somewhere near Jimmy Buffet land!!! LOL !!

When I first planted the trees...my hubby thought that I had lost my mind...even my kids thought that I loved the trees more than them!!! Now you would think that he planted the trees!!! He loves them...my kids really like them too! They finally understand what I was trying to accomplish years ago...When they bring their friends over and sit around the firepit...they finally get it!!!

Now that the trees are easy to take care of (except when trimming them at spring time)..I have turned into a Plumeria addict... I still love the palms though!!!

Hobbies are a good thing!!!

Hi Laura,

I know what you mean, once in a while someone acts like if one enjoys cultivating palms, that its wierd, until it grows in and looks sharp:) Meanwhile it has gotten more and more mainstream. Even Atlantic City NJ places palms in every so often, however its the wrong variety often in a poor location.

One day, I hope to show that my micro climate in Brooklyn can support palms with minimal protection. My 3 story brick house is 30 ft and the back yard faces south. My basement (giant old foundation) is warm and the ground that is not cemented almost never freezes on the southern side. Its a row house from the 1880s Eventually we will see if I can get a cabbage palm or pindo planted along the back of the house how it does.

Greg...I think you do have a great way to keep those palms warm...I think your row house is great...especially from back in the 1880's !!!

Thanks laura, but maybe they have some in a specialty store nearby (especially in NYC, they have alot of exotic things there). I might go looking for some :)

I'm so sorry that I missed your post on the jelly...I was just showing my daughter the pics that I posted and saw your post...I thought that my post was the last...anyway the jelly taste like a sweet citrus jelly. It's hard to explain...but it's quite tasty!! I have sent to some on this forum and on the Plumie forum...They all like it!!!
Maybe the jars will be bigger next year!!! LOL I was alittle nervous about this batch...since it was a new recipe..(it came from a palm poster) Tks..Bryan in LYH !!!
I especially like it on Bagels...Makes me hungry thinking about it!!!

Laura, Thanks again for all the great pics! Im glad you and all your trees made it thru NorIda ok! I love seeing all your pics and hearing you discuss your climate and palms! It makes me a tad jealous and almost even want to live in VB! HA! Its people like all of us here who are getting these palms and the whole "tropical esque gardening more and more popular every year. now if I could just talk the owner of a tropical themed resturant very close to where I live into doing palms that will actually survive here in stead of killing a dozen qeens and a dozen coconuts and several washintonias every here....

Btw... My best friend has two lil wiener dogs and I Love em to death! They are my niece and nephew! hehehe! Love dem hotdogs! ;-)
