It's a generic habanero

She is always picking up strays. How duya think she found me???

I know she looks raggady. I figured out the poor thing was being overwatered at the store that's why it looks so bad. Should I pot it up in a traditional pot or a SWC? BTW I already trimmed the brown leaves.

First of all, WELCOME LISA. And don't apologize for lurking for a week. I think most of us originally lurked far longer than that before we posted. Now please don't be a stranger and post more, and find some pix for us since we are obsessed with seeing photos. In my post on the stepping stone subject, I mentioned that the mold maker said she uses just regular housepaint most of the time. And when I asked her how she got some of her wonderful subtle coloring and highlights, she said she often just uses her fingers to blend in another color. Highlighting the veins on Kirk's new leaves would look wonderful I think. Concrete sealer really holds the color well too. I poured some from the jug I bought into a spray bottle and do it that way. I sure like the idea of putting the big leaves on stumps if used for birdbaths, or leaning them against something just for decor. Our water here is so "hard" that it tends to leave heavy deposits on stuff and messes it up. Karen

Thanks ! ~cactusmcharris ~ Yeah, normally I don't water right away, but the roots were unbroken during the re-potting, and I wasn't sure if with some of the leaves pointing down, if was in need, so i threw caution to the wind this once ! And it definately was bone dry when i brought it home. thanks ! :-)

Thanks everyone, I don't feel saintly! I like the alcoholic analogy...I've always told DH that he's an enabler. His brother has always been the one bailed out by someone. And he's the older brother, too! I wonder if it has something to do with my DH being a very big man...very muscular. His brother is petite, so maybe DH always thought of himself as the 'big brother'? When BIL was 18 he was caught with marijuana and their DAD took the rap for him. My FIL went to jail for 6 months for something his son did!! So that gives you an idea of BIL's mindset perhaps. It's always up to someone else to bail him out. I've told DH that he can't put his brother over me, and he swears he wouldn't. I just found out from my MIL that DH is at the end of his rope with his brother, but he feels responsible for him. My MIL is the same way...she brought over a couple of bags of groceries because DH has been griping about having to buy so much food. Both of us are perturbed by what she did, but this is her skewed way of thinking...she too is responsible for her 50 YO son. We TOLD her not to do that, but you can't tell that woman anything once shes made up her mind. There is no way BIL can go live with her; just another disfunction in this utter screwed up bunch. So I just do what I want from now on. I've stopped cooking...we had enough left overs that we could eat those for the last few nights. BIL has been making himself rather scarce lately, too. I think he's sensing that he's worn out his welcome. I printed up a chore chart...specifically things that they can do, but I haven't hung it yet. And well, if BIL doesn't like it, he can hit the road. DH and I have a 20 year history of dealing with family. His son is a whole book in itself. I'm amazed we made it through intact with that kid in our lives. But at the same token, there is my family...again, incredibly disfunctional, and the crap they put my DH thru, up until the last couple of years, has been more than anyone should have to deal with. So it's a compromise. I'm grateful for this outlet to vent. And I think maybe Buddha will be front and center for the dining table this week!

so, lead. it is toxic and we all know it is toxic and has long-term effects. there is no arguing about that. the most typical pathway is ingestion. generally, i am relatively unconcerned about adults living in a house with lead paint. adults don't eat off the floor or chew windowsills. they do, perhaps, pick up some object off the floor and then eat without washing their hands first. also, if there is a garden close to your house, where chips would fall in it. but, adults are big and developed and this amount of exposure typically isn't such a big deal. Science has shown us that low-levels of lead exposure in pregnant women that wouldn't be a big deal otherwise can cause some neurological defects. Nothing obvious like a third arm, but something less obvious like a learning problem later in life. Or maybe the IQ is 125 instead of 130. But, as adults, if we are aware of a potential risk we can avoid that risk. A pregnant woman living in a house with lead paint chips or lead paint on contact surfaces (door jambs, etc) should wash her hands frequently, particularly before eating. Vacuum more frequently than usual and frequently vacuum around window sills and doors. If you exercise some caution, I don't see any reason to replace the windows and trim because you have a pregnant person in the house. But by the time that baby becomes mobile, you do want to make sure that the lead issue has been taken care of. How you do this is up to you. You can have the windows replaced by a reputable contractor that follows lead-safe practices (this basically means they use a bunch of plastic sheeting) or you can start with the worst offenders and fix them yourself. If you do this, you want to make sure your work area is isolated and that you aren't making things worse by tracking paint chips and lead dust around. I'm really not going to get into how to do the work yourself, but focus on the doors and windows you use the most.

Bloodmeal has high N, while bonemeal has high P. It probably wouldn't hurt to add a little of both. I am sure the little guy can use as much help as possible without over doing it. Good luck and I hope you get some peppers out of it!

ashley9597, the day before I transplanted it into it's new SWC home I gave it a spray down of fish emulsion and kelp fertilizer hoping that will help. Depite the raggady older leaves the newer leaves look just fine. I also put in Raybo's 3:2:1 mix of potting soil:pine bark fines:perlite to help keep the soil in the container from holding too much water. I will post updated pics in about a couple of weeks. Granted the weather up here warms up.

quick question...I can start another thread if need be, but do you have a link with good pictures and instructions on self watering? I live in Florida, and self water sounds great. I just want to make sure I do it right.

Well I called it "generic" because I don't know what subspecies (for lack of a better term) it is. All I know is the little label says habanero. I will assume it is a Jamaican Red until some distinguishing features surfaces.

So....my girlfriend and I just started our first vegetable garden this year. We started everything from seed in a planter, but the labels for the seeds washed off. This grew in the planter which was segregated from our yard. We originally thought it was a pepper, but after it had taken off, we figured it actually looked more like a weed.

I don't want to just rip it out because its growing like crazy (until I verify that it is in fact a weed). We planted Pablanos, red chilis, jalepenos and bell peppers....can someone please help and let me know if this is a weed or pepper....or even something else?

@phishead03: Doesn't look like any of those listed plants unless they are a cultivar I haven't seen (all four of those plants generally have the pretty tapered oval leaf).

If all you want are peppers...that is not a pepper! It could be something edible, but I sure dont know what it is. But if it is taking away from your peppers, pull it up, and plant some peppers in that spot.

Concur with willard, it is Lambsquarters (Chenopodium berlandieri ) Like dandelion most folks consider it a weed, but others consider it a highly desirable green. Substitute for Spinach and Orach which are close relatives.
