You're talking about the palm in the second photo? In just a year or two it will grow enough that the foliage will be up above the house and the view will not be blocked. Is there any way you can get her to wait that long? It will also provide shade, for you when you're outdoors and for the house (possibly reducing your cooling costs), which is not something to dismiss in your climate.

Heck, judicious removal of a few of the older lower fronds would open up the view right now and might help to sway her. It wouldn't cost anything but a little effort--what have you got to lose?

I might be wrong but I think there's not enough profit to make it worth digging and selling.I am not sure the type but the ten or so palms I know that look similar are not real expensive at least here their not.

first it's the palm tree and then its your hair, then your car, then your friends. STOP the madness. My advice is take your time, water your new tree, remove a few bottom fronds as needed and convince your wife you have become a conservationist and have joined Greenpeace and PETA, you love whales and spotted owls and you wish to keep the palm tree because your at one with the tree.

I'd take the bottom leaves off. Landscapers are going broke. Id use the money that i would have paid a landscaper with and buy gold.

Livistona Species

there are at least 3 palm moving companies out here where I live that move palms from homes. They dig them for free (and resell them and charge for the planting) They don't fill in the hole, you have to do that.

I agree that is a Livistona. A guess would be L. decipiens. They are not that hard to move. I would try to move it to the back as it would be easier than argue with the wife and lose anyway.

It looks like a huge over grown bush. No wonder your wife wants the thing gone.

Can the multi trunks be made into a single trunk tree without hurting the health of the tree, or is it too late for trying to alter the tree like that.

Also, the tallest trunk seems to have grown to the level of the eaves on your house. All the lower growing fonds on that trunk could be removed, and the palm would begin to look more like a good lawn palm.

If the tree would suffer from such drastic of pruning, or if such a pruning would violate this palm cultivar's type too much, then by all means get rid of it. I say that only because, I doubt most any woman would want that apparently ill trained palm tree growing in her back yard either.

I would try trimming it and see if she can live with it.It is worth a try.

Thanks everyone for your input. There are going to be a million other things to do at this house, its been vacant for almost a year. Hopefully after some water and pruning it will grow on my wife, Ha! If not I may try to move it to the back yard, it would look good next to the pool.

lmoore- cut off the dead fronds(maybe the smaller palms)water the palm and fertilize it. It is a nice palm, so dont kill it.

True I know absolutely nothing about lots of palms including the Livistona suggested species in the photo.

Though, I do know the beauty of many well kept palm trees. In fact, not by only the ones I have seen in nature or on private property, but I have also seen many beautiful, both mature and young, palm trees' photos on this Gardenweb forum.

That in no way means that I have to like even the repulsive looking trees, palm or not, which have been allowed to grow into such a poor and overgrown appearance of a condition as seen in the view of the palm in that second photo.

I wouldnt make a hasty decision. We cant see the whole yard so its really hard to tell if it looks that bad. It does look like it needs a healthy pruning. I agree with the others, give it water, and trim it up (probably significantly, even though that isnt always the greatest thing for the tree) and see if it grows on you. My guess is if you move it, you will kill it.

Don't let that new wife control you! I was married to a total control freak who absolutely totally destroyed my family. She absolutely destroyed my life and the relationship I had with my young son. Then when there was nothing left of me to manipulate and destroy, she ran off with some jerk from work. So be careful, a lot of women love to totally manipulate men, and then blame us men for everything that has gone wrong in their lives. Anyway, keep the palms, all of them. After some watering and some fertilizing with a good palm fertilizer they should recover and start looking healthy. If you want, trim off the lower fronds, but not too close to the trunk. Leave about 3 inches of the leaf base attached to the trunk, so you don't damage the trunk.

hmmm! Have you checked out other houses in the neighborhood that may be landscaped a little different? This one hasn't really gotten off to a very good start it seems. I'd be a little afraid someone on this forum may recognize it later on while driving by! LOL

It looks like a beautiful lax-leaf form of chamaerops humilis (european fan palm) to me. It is a drought tolerant, very tough palm. I would leave it in place and trim off the lower leaves if you want more visibility. It will take a back hoe to dig and move. If I lived out there- I would move it for you!

As far as this palm goes, I recommend trimming them all up to a 10 oclock to 2 oclock shape add a little sweetness for the misses and see if she can feel better about it. If not, it's trimmed up and ready for a chance of surviving a transplant to the back. Or , just tell her it's on the endagered species list and can't be moved? Best to keep coconuts story in mind as you procede though!

It's a Med palm grown in too much shade. That's not a Livistona trunk at all.
Why not offer it for free on ebay?..you make somebody happy and dont kill a living plant as old as you.

Frankly speaking I don't know too much about including the Livistona suggested species in the photo.

But it is always good to have trees planted across your house, but make sure they don't create a trouble for your house mostly in the rainy season.

It's hard to see what's behind it. I think your home might have more curb appeal without it and you could plant something smaller in its place. Or trim it way up and plant something below it, like a low, mounding type of shrub.

I think the palm looks really bad, but with lots of care and pruning, it might make a decent tree with some nice smaller tropicals below it. But I guess since the original poster isnt here anymore... It looks like were kind of starting our own fanfiction for palms, lol! But anyway, something tells me that the palm was removed, but in my story the palm was pruned and well cared for and lots of amazing palms and tropicals were planted next to it and today their landscape is the envy of the entire city! lol :)

It's a shade grown,water starved Med palm..they transplant as easy as any species of palm in the palm world. It would be a shame if it was chainsawed...

Anyone south of 34º north latitude that doesn't recognize shade-grown Chamaerops humilis should move back to Canada (east of Vancouver).

Let a landscaper dig it out for free. They're generally nice palms well suited to single-story architecture, but yours is badly sited.
