Oxalis with deformity of leaves-pic

I'm new to oxalis. This condition is not going on with the oxalis of the person who gave them to me. Can you see the puckering and very tiny leaves? Not all they leaves are like this. Some are normal. I'm guessing it's a pest or a deficiency or cold window sill?

They are potted in moist potting mix with 30 % vermiculite .

The window sill is cold but they sprouted anyway. They are in a S facing window.

I did previously have spider mites and thrips on other plants but have (for the time being) erradicated them and never noticed them on the oxalis.

Any help is appreciated.

Thrips OR mites could cause that kind of damage, and both are quite likely to infest oxalis.

any possibility of cold damage at leaf formation ....???

is it only older leaves... or newer ones also ???

After doing some research, I do believe you are right. It looks to be a mosaic virus. :`( I'm devestated. I really reeeeally wanted pumpkins for Halloween. I don't have any on the vine yet, so that idea is shot. I can't treat it can I.... But I also have cucumber vines and some acorn sqash vines in the same garden withOUT the virus. Will it spread? Should I pull up and throw out the vines that do have the virus or is that going to even make a difference? Am I going to have the virus 'in the soil' now so anything I plant next year will be sick too?

Hi Scott, I have an expanding collection of Oxalis and would like to add O. oregana to it. But I can't find any nurseries online or close by (I'm in Southern Calif) that grow it. Uh oh, classic herbicide (weedkiller) damage. If you or someone else didn't spray anywhere in the vicinity, look at this about contaminated compost & manure from WSU: http://www.puyallup.wsu.edu/soilmgmt/Clopyralid.htm Be certain to read the info about doing a bioassay. Rhizo, I treated it with 'Joy" dish soap and water, even though I can't see any pests. The result is the purple leaves are losing their purple, especially in the creases where they fold for the night.

Ken, I measured the soil temp at 59- 60 degrees in the window sill.
They are all new leaves as it just started sprouting. However not every leaf shows damage.

I think I will have these go dormant by putting them in the basement and hope for a better look in the spring. Whether the problem is pest or cold, it could be resolved by then. I just hope they will tolerate this short sprouting season, going dormant, and resprouting later.....

As we have a foot of snow on the ground and -12 F windchills I wouldn't mind going dormant myself.....;-0

and your last paragraph.. sentence is my point.. you are zone 5 ... -12 wind... mid 20's to 0 ....

and you are trying to grow a tropical plant on the window sill ...

unless you see a bug... dont bother treating a plant... bugs usually attack the newest softest.. tenderest leaves.. not the rough old leathery old ones ....

i think.. when they sprouted... and i dont recall when that was.. if you mentioned it.... they got some cold shock from the window ....

zero at night.. and a sunny window during the day .. can almost be a 100 degree temp shift .... some plants.. and i dont know about your specifically ... can not handle such ...

if you are really intent on growing in the winter.. in zone 5 ... consider a plain old shop light .... with plain old lamps... maybe 15 bucks.. and a rig to be able to raise and lower the light... keeping them within 3 to 4 inches of the plant .... running 16 to 18 hours per day .... and you will be amazed what you can grow and how well you can do it.. in zone 5 .... windowsills are out ... i gave up 20 years ago with that ....

add 2 lights.. 4 lamps.. and double you sunshine ...

here is a picture of a rig i built years ago to grow hosta ll winter long ... from seed ... the very white parts.. are teh trays .....

I think the problem is both lack of humidity and warmth. Mine in the greenhouse do that during the winter, but it's not bugs. The leaf deformity goes away when they are warmer/brighter lit and more moist.
All that happens in just 4 Months!

thx for the pic Ken. I did a set up similar last year for spring seedlings. I had it in front of a window to use as much natural light as possible as well as shop light and a fan.
I have already mentioned the window temp at it's coldest part of the day right now.

Sandy, thx for the encouraging words.

I'll just be patient with plant and the weather and have yet another reason to look forward to spring. :)
