Personally, I have a little Jack Russell terrier. All I see is the bottom half pointing down and the tail wagging, wagging, wagging. Of course, that means I have some holes to fill, something every man dreads.

I live next door to an ax murderess. She's this sweet little grandmother, but every spring, armed with her father's ancient wooden handled ax, she can be seen standing in the yard, feet spread wide, waiting, lurking, gleefully anticipating the sweet thunk of the descending ax as she unapologetically sends another mole to wherever they go.

The neighbor on the other side of me prefers a pitchfork. Halloween is a blast around here.

But really, so many methods exists because some people have problems setting a trap or a poison. Some people are lazy, some people really don't care, and some want...well, they don't know what they want.

The "best method" is probably a combination of methods combined with eternal vigilance.

I agree with heptacodium. I did rid them from my tomatoes with herbs and onions, mostly onions but thats only a small area (five 24' by 2' beds). I tryed poison but I think it was some-how mixed up with a fertility drug! Maby have your whole place paved, paint it green and plant in containers!! I think we should spend halloween at heps place!?

You have grubs...so the moles will come. Grubs like good lawns...where the eating is good. The moles know that..and will visit those lawns that look good...and when they find grubs, they hang around.
So, get rid of the grubs and you get rid of the moles.

Unfortunately, moles also like worms as much as gardeners like worms. Don't ask me to be too specific about how I know this, but I will go so far as to say DH's aim with a foresters hoe isn't so good...the victim (mole) of his attack that day had a tummy full of nightcrawlers.

One year, many years ago, I had moles too. Big problem.

A common myth is that moles come into your yard to eat the grubs you have an if you eliminate the grubs the moles will leave. But the moles actually prefer earthworms to the grubs although they will eat the grubs, and many other insects as well, to keep from starving. Another common misconception is that you can have several moles in a small yard at once but since one mole requires about 1/4 acre for its needs, and will defend that territory to the death from any other mole, you will seldom have more then one mole at a time although that one mole can be very destructive. The single most effective method of controlling moles is to make the food source so distastefull the mole will leave, for a time. To do that you need to spray 1 pint of castor oil over 2,500 square feet and water that in well. Less will not work and more is a waste of money. When the castor oil coats the moles food source and makes it distasteful enough the mole will leave for 6 to 8 weeks which is about the length of time that food source tastes bad.
