Gardening woes...and a discovery!

Hello all!

While cleaning up my yard I noticed SEVERAL piles of unidentified poop...I took note that whatever it is prefers to leave its droppings on pine needles. My yard seems to be the chosen one for this/these creature(s). Please provide tips to make my yard as unappealing as possible...

So far I have:

-removed as many pine needles as possible

-spread ashes from my wood stove along the fence line. My logic behind this was to get paw prints so that I could identify the animal, but it turns out to be a good "anti-poop" medium! Sadly, rain washes the ashes away, so this is not a permanent deterrent.

Poop comes many different shapes, colors and sizes, describe your find.

The specimen I found just hours ago was greenish, had grass in it, and was "loose" and wet (ugggg, this is so gross). The others have been dark in color...almost black and smooth...bigger than kitty poop I believe. I was considering taking a photo for you, but that is just too gross and I don't want to turn people off...I need answers! *smile

I arrived at TDG just before noon today & the entomologist took the 3 adults as well as the last 5 healthy crysalids...I had a couple that weren't viable. He releases new BFs at noon everyday so they went out with several dozen Zebra Longwings & a bunch of other more tropical BFs...he had Malachites, Small Postman & several Scarlet Mormon(Papilio Rumanzovia) butterflies. He was also releasing a few of our native BFs...an Orange Barred Sulphur, a Sleepy Orange, & a BST along with my 3 Monarchs! Glad they have a new home with nectar available. He mentioned that if these are in "migratory" mode...they won't nectar & will fly to the top of the glass & try to get out...so they may not survive long if that's the case. He also mentioned that you were there last week, EG! He said this was a really weird Monarch migration because there were migrating Monarchs & mating Monarchs coming through North Texas at the same time. I have several PST crysalids but they will be fine until spring in my box in the garage. I am planning to plant a lot more A.fimbriata for them for 2012. They seem to prefer the tender leaves of A.fimbriata over my A.tormentosas. I'm hoping to get seeds of several other native pipevines for my garden as well for them. Sue, it is not a traditional Japanese garden as known today, but it is an historical site worthy of restoration. And that is exactly what is happening. It was constructed in an old quarry, construction lead by a Japanese man named Jingu. It is quite a story, and was once the crown jewel of San Antonio. I will post more info soon. Meanwhile, another neglected JG is being restored in San Antonio and I do not have time to breath!

They didn't have a phone number, so didn't get any information so will just take a run out there in the morning to see what it's all about. I did print out their list of available plants and trees, definitely stuff you don't see at Home Depot or Lowe's!

Mystery garden discovery (iris like? daylily like?)

If you can get from daylilies to hot dogs it probably IS too close to dinner time! :) I think she missed the flower because this is in the back of a VERY large rock garden (think LARGE rocky ledge) and tucked in the back corner. A friend of hers noticed it today and brought it to her attention but I don't think it's an area she usually frequents. BUT, she is going to collect the seeds and plant them and by next year, we should have a color (which I agree, would sure narrow the field!) I run a plant sale for my garden club each year and I can't tell you how many daylilies we are given for sale from people's yards and they don't even know what color they are when they bloom... and we have buyers who DO know just what they want for color so therein lies the crunch. I have to hold the pots from one year to the next and hope for bloom so I can label them by at least the color the following year. But it always amazes me that someone can have a LARGE clump of something and not know the color!!! Thanks to all! A daylily of some ilk it is!

Actually, pnw katie, a picture is about the only way to get your scat identified. We're grown ups; we can take it! lol

petzold and rhizo, thank you for paying attention to my problem.

Since cleaning up my messy side yard (problem area) I haven't noticed any new "surprises" waiting for me.

Should I find something, I will promptly run inside and take the most amazing pictures you've ever seen!

Aw, I was picturing you carrying a steaming handful to your kitchen counter so that you could take a good picture!! lolol

Hence the clarification rhizo! But I do have a photo...this "sample" was found at the edge of the leaf pile in my front yard. It doesn't look like the previous "gifts" left in the back. Those were quite dark and had some sort of growth on them after a day or more. I believe one of the many neighborhood cats is the culprit this time...I could be mistaken, as I tend to blame everything on those cats. Whatever it is appears to be ill! What do you all think...cat or other?

Does resemble cat feces. The shape is the clue, but colors vary. You mentioned the grass blades earlier, well, cats and dogs will eat grasses to calm an upset stomach. The grass acts as a laxative and is not digested.
