Wow, that has not been my experience. Do you have a link to the thread where people where saying that?

This is my first year growing, however my bell peppers get about 5 hours of sun a day and look ALOT better then my hot peppers that get full sun. The high today in florida is 98

Well, I must say that my wickedly packed container garden on my apartment porch (very soon to have tons more room in a townhome i'm renting!) contains some pepper plants that may not quite get an adequate amount of sun in some people's opinion. =) I keep most of them on the front row, right by the rail. The next row is my maters which tower way over the pepper plants (so, being in the second row, they still get all the sun they need). A pepper plant or two did not fit in the front row & are doing just fine in the 3rd row...my point for this discussion. An extra Jalapeno & a Cali Wonder Bell, I believe.

We have our peppers in full sun most of the day however it is morning and early afternoon sun not the blazing afternoon sundown sun....however it is not really full sun as we have all of our containers in a pool screen enclosure that filters the sun. Same actually for our maters and we are in Florida and it was 95% today and quite humid. See below and judge for yourself.

I have one variety that prefers partial sun. That is Manzano. I have some that I keep in full sun, but the ones in partial sun seem to do better.

These are 2 factors for bell peppers:
The average 24 hour temperature will influence how fast the pepper fruit that has set on the plant will mature & shade can keep that average temperature lower, which in the summer is good. (The variation between day & night temperatures has more influence on pepper flowering & fruit set; not discussed here.)
The progressive increase in summer day light strength will influence the size of the pepper fruit to be less; supplying 10% shade will keep that intensity modulated, which in the northern hemisphere is good come June. (The pepper plants require at least 6 hours worth of direct sunlight lumens & if gets those minimal lumens spread throughout the day then indirect shade works too.)

I agree with JohnA on the pubescens. My Rocoto DEFINITELY does better here in Florida zone 8B in partial. I finally learned that lesson thank goodness. I was about to give it up.

Also, I find that chiltepins do well in shade.

The other peppers seem to thrive in the heat/sun, especially the chinense.

Chea...it's 98 & humid here today. Only a few pepper plants went on the rail. =)

I think it's more a question of temperature than the hours of sun per day. More important is the pepper. After several years of failure I know I cannot grow most varieties in San Francisco. No luck at all with jalapenos or even bell peps, but pimientos de padron do well every year, my rocottos (c. pubescens aka manzanos) are growing like crazy, and shisito peppers seem to be doing ok so far. Trial and error, or the experience of others in your area are the best guides.

I grew 2 manzanos last summer to test the conventional wisdom of growing pubescens in full sum.

The plant in full sun gave 2 flushes of fruit in summer and the one in the shade never fruited. One plant was a clone of the other.

No fruit plant, plenty healthy:

hey earthworm, if you are on the west side of the cascades, as i suspect you are, then i say leave them in as much sun as you can get, unless you are in a hot spot among the trees or hotter than most in our area. i live on lopez island and so our temps rarely get above 80 to 85...and then for only a few days in a row. most of the people on this forum will hit 90's on a regular basisand 60's at night. you have to remember that west of the cascades we have quite cool temps compared to most. it seems to me a more important aspect is to have a cover over them at night when our temps often drop into the 40's, even though its "summer". good luck with it and lets all hope the PNW warm weather continues this summer and doesn't act like last summers cold and cloudy

I'm in texas- yesterday was 107 degrees. The bhuts are doing okay but haven't set blooms or fruit yet. I germinated them in March. It has been 3 months going on 4 months and still not a bloom. I'm not worried because other than curled leaves (due to the heat), they are doing quite fine. I'm more interested in having them live through to next year so that I can used what I learned this growing season to get some fruit!

Here on the Texas coast my peps in full sun wilt badly the day after watering. In the evening they perk back up. My little ones are still getting partial shade, but they get direct sun in the afternoon.

Another Texan here. Daytime temps have been at least in the mid 90's for over a month now and mid 100's for the past 10 days or so. Nighttime temps have been mid 70's and are now bottoming out at 80.

When the mid 90's hit last month I started getting sun scald on my sweet peppers, so I rolled out dark green sunshade (75% sun block) 7 feet above the whole 15ft x 18ft plot. This is the first year I've done this and it surely won't be my last. Pepper production has been fantastic. Large fruits without any scalding, and believe it or not, many varieties are still blossoming and setting fruit.

My hot peppers are in pots out in the sun. Production has been very good with them too, though they are no longer setting fruit. I am in the process of moving them to the shaded plot as I get room in the hopes they'll blossom again like the sweet peppers are doing. I did move several serranos there a couple weeks ago an am getting *some* fruit set, so maybe I can keep the rest of the hots producing too. Time will tell. About time for a freak cool front or tropical storm, ain't it?

Here's this morning's harvest. There's California Wonder and Park's Wonder bells, pimentos, gypsies, serranos, jalapenos, Big Jim, Garden Salsa, and poblanos. As you can see, I like them ripe! :)

Woo hoo! Ask and ye shall receive. About a half hour ago the wind shifted out of the northeast and dropped the temps from 106 to 93 and is still dropping. Looks like I'm going to miss out on the rains in Texas this evening, but at least it's cooling off a bit! :)

Wow!!!Medcave- that looks incredibly awesome, how are you going to use them? Pickle them? or dry them? or what? Great job!!! So nice and healthy and RED!!!!!!!!!

The poblanos, jalapenos, and Big Jims went into Sunday night's King Ranch casserole.

The bell peppers and gypsies were cored and frozen for future stuffed peppers.

The pimentos will be made into a Red Pepper Spread once I get a few more ripened. Frozen for now.

The serranos will be going into what I call Christmas Salsa if my tomatillos (red and green, get it?) ever get going. I have 15 tomatillos plants, some rare varieties included, that are just loaded with blossoms, but so far have only formed enough fruit for maybe one batch. Not sure what's going on there. The hummingbirds have been working them over steadily, you would thing they would be loaded down by now. Seems they're acting like my meager tomato crop this year.

The Garden Salsas have been a big surprise for such an uninspiring name. My first year for growing them. They're the long skinny ones, and they're hot! They're big producers and when I get a few more they will be hickory smoked, dried, and ground for seasoning.

Last and not least are the jalapenos. They're my everyday pepper used in nachos, stuffed and grilled, fajitas, whatever. Right now I'm holding back on picking them because a whole bunch are about ripe and after seeing your wonderful pickled pepper jars, the whole game plan changed. :) Thanks for posting the recipe. I will be trying it out soon, though I will probably give the jars 10 minutes in a boiling water bath to vacuum seal them since my storage pantry isn't the coolest one this time of year.

Good luck with the rest of your crop. I really like your Mammoth red jalapenos. Will have to try them next year.

PS I called the Park bells 'Wonders'. They're actually Park Whoppers.

I'm in the midlands of South Carolina and it's upper 90's everyday. All my peppers have always done well in about 6 hrs. of full sun. But this is my first year trying to grow Bhuts. They were put out permenatly at about 4" high first of May and are now about 17" tall and appear to be doing fine, but wilt in afternoon sun then come back about dark. I am determined to get fruit. Should I get them out of the afternoon sun?

Funny, I noticed the people responding from FL and TX seemed to favor at least a bit of shade for certain varieties and the original questioner (presumably from cool, wet western WA) didn't understand why you would give peppers shade... Location, location, location right? Here in Wetern Washington *full* sun is very important. A little bit of shade is tolerated, but full sun and the all-too-rare warmth we feel is so important here.

What with our pretty good start to summer my peppers at work are doing better this year than last (which was a cool summer) and the peppers in the home garden which are covered by vented plastic are doing even better.

I've got some bhut's going for my first time and I have noticed that I can't keep them out in the sun from about 11 am to 5pm. The leaves start to curl up. They are finally starting to show some flowers appearing from the long haul since I started them in March. I keep them in mostly shade, they only get the morning sun until about 10, then its just the indirect sunlight that they get for the rest of the day. They are growing actually very very well the past month or so, approaching 2 feet.

peterspepper, what zone are you in and what has your weather been like?

I'm in zone 6. The weather had been very hot, mid to upper 90's and high humidity for about 3 weeks. We finally got a cooler spell here with temps in mid 80's for the high. I might try to move them into more direct sunlight now since its not blazzing hot and humid now.
