I woke up this morning to a snowy and cold tropical paradise. We ended up with about an inch.

Great photos! I hope you wrap that all now though. It's like 0 in wisconsin tonight and its heading east.

Thanks frmmi. Nothing predicted in the 10 day forecast less than 20f. I'll wrap them in a few weeks. Earlier if theres going to be any extended 15f or below. Even still they're just getting christmas lights and a layer of frost cloth. No babying. LOL!

So after reading this thread I ran to my Lowes (mantua township NJ). They had brown turkey, Kadota and black mission. I decided on the Kadota as they looked the best. The stem was only about 13-14 inches but looked nice and mature, slightly thicker than my pinky (Im female for those that dont know :-) so dont think man finger, lol. A few thin stems spread out from the main and it had a nice amount of leaves. Its pretty healthy looking. For $10 I couldn't resist one. Do I have to keep it in the pot, or is it safe to plant at this stage? Thanks all!! ~M

Hey Pa folks. I am new gardener here from NEPA. Im not new to growing things. I was fortunate to grow up around orchards and strawberries and farmland but I am new to backyard gardening and I am learning lots and failing too lol. I am looking forward to seeing what everyone is up to and hopefully I can share something worthwhile. I would eventually like to get my small growing spaces set up so I can grow extended seasons. Someone said to me a while back "you know you can practically grow all year but Jan/Feb/march" I would like to see how everyone does their cold cabbages and root veggies etc... I am growing in a small backyard but hopefully by next summer I can purchase some acreage from my uncle. He is an old farmer and hopefully will let me have some land. He is a bit old school though. I made the mistake of saying "organic" around him and he was like "ahh you can't fight the insects without spraying. Don't even waste your time!" Anyhow Thanks again guys!

I've been gorwing tomato plants for years but this year we're putting in a real garden :) My husband and I started 9 different kinds of peppers from seed and those I plan on waiting until the end of the month to plant out along with 2 eggplants that I bought. I have 4 wonderboy tomato plants and 4 roma tomato plants that I bought and those will go in the ground this weekend. I want to try horseradish and garlic - these were both impulse purchases and it wasn't until after I bought them that I started reading about them and I realized I should've probably planted these both in the fall. Oh well, live and learn I suppose. I also have some bunching green onion seeds and some green bean seeds to direct sow. my garden will definitely be a "learn as I go". I don't plan on doing any cucumbers since we have friends that grow them and I'm not big on melons and we don't like brussel sprouts. my mom is big on herbs so I don't plan on doing any other than basil. next year I'd like to try carrots, regular onions, potatoes and lettuce. We have a 12'x20' bed that gets full sun, lots of drainage and we amended the soil with homemade compost. We had 18" of topsoil to start with. What I'd really be interested in knowing is when people start their veggies. That shat I seem to struggle the most with.

I have seen tropicals for sale at the Phila Flower Show (March), and at the Winterthur Garden show (can't remember exact name) in Sept. You may want to check their web sites, and see who some of the vendors are. Some may be close enough to do a road trip, or perhaps they'll be visiting in your area. I have a hard time keeping indoor plants alive, so I don't pay much attention to the vendors. Keep poking around the various forums, and someone will know. Try the smaller nurseries, and see if they can give you any leads if they do not carrying many tropicals. If you can visit the Phila Flower Show in March, do so. It is amazing. One year they did a lot with tropicals, and it was beautiful and fascinating. We were a little disappointed, because we go looking for plants we can use (mostly outdoors), and there wasn't much of that that year.

Great pics, Jay! You are braver than I. This being my first winter with a Trachy in the ground, I am not taking any chances. Maybe less babying next season if I make it through successfully this year.

That's some nice pic's. It reminds me of when I lived in Chattanooga in the 80s. The palms seem to not mind the cold.

Bob - I wouldn't take any chances if I were you in W. Michigan either. We both live in 6b ish zones but your periods of teens and twenties last much longer than mine here in S.Central PA. Better safe than sorry dude.

Topher - Normally I'd hate the snow, but its awesome to finally see them covered in it. I guess I don't really hate the snow, its just that ever since I've been into tropical gardening I've come to realize it kind of puts a damper on things. LOL!

Really beautiful pics Josh!One word of warning,o.k.more than one,I would watch moisture getting into crown if temps are headed to lower 20s and upper teens,I had spear pull on 6 plants 4 palms a cordyline and D.indivisa from .72"rain and 18F less than a week later,keeping water out of crowns and feet dry during winter is KEY!They do look great covered in snow!great pics,your palms are such a healthy green!!!!

Jay, you are right about our stretches of cold. Although we rarely ever fall below zero with our close proximity to Lake Michigan, we can have many consecutive days where the temp never makes it back to freezing. Keeping my fingers crossed for a mild winter! :)

Yea Topher my palms that have already seen winter are totally fine and still growing but my newly planted ones(this spring)took it hard,I do think they are bouncing back though.
Jay,when your trachy is 6-7' tall that will really be a cool pic with the snow covered trachy and snow covered mountains in the background!just like California!!
