Can I cut short my long Bermuda lawn?
Comments (10)I would leave it until spring... then cut it low with your rotary, bagging everything. Then rent a dethatcher and go to town. You won't believe the mess, but it's worth it. I would then rake up the big stuff and use the mower again (as vacuum) or rent a vacuum. If you're going with a reel then I might even cut it again with the reel at like .6" and take another pass with the dethatcher just touching the surface and repeat cleanup. Feed it, water it, and get ready for spring growth spurt. That's what I would do anyway... Bermudakid said weekly at 1" because in the spring it grows like crazy. I mow 3-4 times per week at 3/4" in the spring. I use a power reel as I don't think i could move a push reel unless i did it every day. Personally I think a rotary at 1" looks like crap unless it's very flat. I would stick to 1.5" with a rotary on a lumpy yard. If you look for 'top dressing' you will get lots of hits on how to flatten your yard. By sprinkle do you mean 5 wheel barrels? that's what i would call a sprinkle :) If you're not ready to fall in love with your grass, then keep the rotary high and delete this thread :)...See MoreThornton's Lemon Drop
Comments (11)Thanks Laura, moonie. yes, in a few weeks the TLD should be covered with flowers from top to bottom, definitely seems to like it in the ground. Not bad for a 3 1/2 year old that started as a cutting from a tree that got split in two in Sept 2010. But strangely the growth seems kind of weak, prone to breaking off. But until something new breaks off I'm enjoying the blooms :) So Laura, did i hear something about you coming out west around the time of JJ's open house? Comments (30)I planted some Jan. 17 when the temps were in the mid to high 60's. (Had to bring them in at night.) They were ready for the first picking today. That is about 80 days. I planted more in early February when the temps were higher. Now, the February planting have almost caught up to those from January. They look like they are going to be ready after 66 days like the ones I planted last fall. The first batch this year were seeds saved from those with ruddy pods only. The ones I picked yesterday have something like two or three times as many ruddy pods as those from last fall. I plan to plant ruddy pod seeds again this fall. These have the strings removed and are ready for the pot....See MoreThornton Lemon Drop
Comments (0)Hey Bill, I think she doing good. I have two concerns with it though. 1 - the brown horizontal lines on the right branch is that normal or just keep an eye on it 2 - I usually don't like cutting the inflow off, but should I so it can focus on rooting? I have it bag rooted 50/50 with perlite, on a heat mat set at 84. Also under a t5 light with other cuttings. I am thinking about moving her outside this week. The other cuttings are progressing at about the same rate. Any advise would gladly be taken....See MoreLoveplants2 8b Virginia Beach, Virginia
