Freeze did more damage Than I thought

Hi,

WEll looks like some of my plants suffered more in the freeze than I realized. Puu Kahea started right away putting out a great inflo..will be the first for this plant, leaves slow growing. I noticed the top of the inflo was hard..Just looked closer and it had died and totally rotted down and was hanging over. I cut it off little above the union..did not want the rot to continue, is green. I feel so bad. The plant even is growing a new branch, 2nd yr plant. It was the only one in the ground that I did not lose.

Daisy Wilcox, put out tiny green leaves, instantly turned yellow. Started again, is putting out little green ones, one has grown. Playful has very small leaves. Plastic pink, I cut all its leaves off from last year, is finally putting out healthy claws. So...got to watch the others. Celedines inflo seems to be ok.

Hi,
Does anyone know why the inflo on puu kahea died? Did it produce to quickly, new branch, small leaves? Am now concerned with my other plants.

Majorly windy here, I have put most all of my canned plants into the ground..caught a couple the other night as it was going over. Windy here tonight too. Anyone else got winds?

Ah Karen, So sorry for all that. How heart braking to have an inflo and then it dies. We don't have wind here yet, but I'm sure we will. I'm in FL and the winds will come. I've started an area in our front yard where I am planning on planting a few of my larger plummies, and am wondering about the high winds that I'm sure will be joining us soon. I know there are others with their plummies planted outside here and they seem to be ok. Did you keep the pots on yours when you planted them or right into the soil?

I just expanded my asparagus patch and also followed that advice from the Ohio State website, completely covering the roots with soil. I hope they don't have any problems coming up.

Umm, how many (cups of) peppers did you put in the pot to make how many jars of jelly? The vinegar/pepper mixture can give off some nasty fumes when heated, but I make pepper jelly every year (jalapenos and Hinkelhatz, no habs) as well as salsa and never had a problem with cleaning the pots - though if I don't wear gloves (come on, they're just jals - right!) after a couple cups of diced peppers the cuticles start burning). All you have to do with jelly pot is rinse in hot water and stick in DW - it comes off really easy, salsa tends to leave a line and may need scrubbing.

I don't know anything about prices in NJ, but in Michigan I spend between $85-130 week on groceries for a family of 4, but my budget isn't as tight as theirs is right now. I buy lots of expensive things such as cereals, granola bars, extra lean beef . . . I do shop sales and use coupons for cereal and granola bars, but if I were in a money crisis, I could certainly make due with less pre-packaged junk food and focus on nutrition vs. convenience. BTW, I was talking with a friend from out of state who in the same conversation told me about her husband losing his job and her new $32 haircut that she wasn't happy with! Some people just don't get it! When she visited this summer, she wanted to stop at the convenience store for a soda when she had some at the house and we were only 2 minutes from home! Silly and wasteful habits!

Agreed...some of the snowfall figures for Japanese cities are staggering, when you consider how high the average yearly minimum temperature is. There are places on the west coast that average several FEET of snow per year, but hardly ever go below 25F. Must be a terrible, slushy mess all throughout winter there. (but in the mountains, of course, the snow is presumably more powdery) The difference is again due to the factors mentioned above; when the US east coast has rain in winter, it's usually because a system is pulling up warm air from the Gulf. If this so happens to interact with enough cold air and form a cyclone, you get a nor'easter. OTOH, west coast of Japan is getting snow caused by incredibly cold Siberian air passing over the warm Sea of Japan. It never really stops because of the Siberian High pressure system, that influences weather patterns all the way over to the various 'stans. It's like a non-stop version of Lake Effect snow. Due to the almost 4X greater surface area and much, much greater depth, it doesn't substantially freeze though, as most of the Great Lakes can.

One of two things may have happened. Young plants sometimes make a false inflo to stimulate branching. The false inflo then dies after it has served its purpose. The other possibility is that the branch was scheduled to bloom this year; after starting the inflo, the plant realized blooming wasnÂt a good idea this year because freeze recovery needed to take priority. Perhaps it lost a large part of its root system and decided to rebuild its roots instead of blooming this year. I think the false inflo is the more likely explanation.

Hi Lori,
I put my plants in the pot directly into the ground..see picture. I don't have a large enough area to plant them all in the ground, for them spreading and for light. The actual plants that will stay in the ground are about 36" apart, but right now have some in-between. If the leaves and plants get too big..(HOPE) will take some in the pots and put them on my patio.. I can't move them forward, that area gets hot west sun.

In the back I have 4 directly into the ground, one near the scarecrow is Celidine, accross there are in the ground. Read also that the pots in the ground do not dry out as quickly, can take water from the ground..think.
I still need edging to hold back the grass. Now, feel if another 30 mi burst of wind comes, they will stay.

Hi Philip,
The false inflo, never knew they did that, that makes sense. I did notice, now that I think about it, seemed like that inflo was very dark. Then as it started to grow upward, it just rotted. Thought I had did something wrong. Roots are ok, cause after the freeze, transplanted some in the cans to better soil, never had any perlite, was straight cactus soil.

thanks.. Can see how on Celidines inflo, is bumpy and puffed up. Makes sense, thanks..WAs afraid I did something wrong, would effect all of them.

A first. Most all of my cuttings are going to make it!! I have claws standing up starting into leaves..am so jazzed.
