Penang Peach puts on a show Plus two 1st blooms

Hi everyone,
Here is Penang Peach. A consistent performer for me. I bought it as a cutting at Dole Plantation in 2009. It has bloomed every year since 2010. Last year its late season inflos bloomed through Christmas. Its a must have.

First blooms on Loretta. I bought it last year at the Ft. Bend PSA sale. I forget the specific seller. It kind of has a spicy, maybe Big Red gum scent.

Dwarf Orange first flower. I bought this at last year's Clear Lake PSA sale. This should be a nice inflo in a week or so.

Hi, everyone! great news is that the Rosarian couple were very nice. I actually tried calling them last night but couldn't get through because they had their fax machine on. Then tonight they explained that they couldn't return my call because the number I had left them had been cut off by their answering machine. They too have not grown tree roses because like Karl had feared, rose trees do terrible in Kansas. Stupid me should also have thought far ahead about our tornado problems as well. I didn't think about this issue before the terrible winds this past weekend. Flower2sew, in Overland Park we got hit real bad. There is still debris from knocked over light poles on Hwy 69 from people crashing from the ice... But the snow lasted just one terrible day, it was very thick snow,and we were blasted with both ice and snow at once and in some parts of Overland Park, the cable lines and phone lines were down ...then argh, it shot up to near 60 degree warmth right the following day, then dropped down again the following evening. The rosarian couple agreed that they would never leave out the tree roses at this point because of last weekend's extreme swing of temperature (including this week) but they too felt I really needed to speak to a Master Rosarian, so they gave me the emergency helpline for the Rose Society. The nice rosarian couple I spoke to explained that they themselves have never grown tree roses because of how erratic Kansas weather can be in the spring and they said that the people they know who had rose trees all had either greenhouses or would go to a nursery and "rent" out a space for the winter. In other words they wouldn't know how to advise me on how to keep my roses indoors in my particular situation. They did feel that since my rose trees still have buds sprouting, that keeping them in a completely dark, cold, poorly insulated garage at this point is a question that only a master rosarian could answer. It is a tough call because no sane person/gardener would ever be in the crazy predicament that I am in now... I am doing crazy stuff like lightly spraying my roses with warm water in the morning and when I come home, then again before going to bed to keep them as close to a greenhouse effect and reducing my house temperature from 68 degrees to 65 so that I don't shock the roses when I bring them outside to 58 degree sunshine (but that makes me super cold indoors and I end up having to wear a few layers of clothing in the house and shivering under the covers when I try to sleep LOL). So hopefully I can reach the helpline before I get "outta control" and do more crazy outta control guesswork. Anyway, thank you EVERY One and All for your help and ongoing support! Hugs to each of you... P.S. forgot to say that to me the membership dues for the American Rose Society is very reasonable, and wouldnt have hesitated for a second had I not been so broke from all the training with Eluane and house payments but in due time if I can just make the baby steps and get both trees to survive.

Hello Everyone, Hi Mike!! Thank you..How are your plants and trees doing? Nice to see you here!! : ) Hey Jen, I am so happy to have these blooms right now. I agree, the blooms do have unique shape. If you look at the pic with the trees under the lights, you can see a inflo from my Taj Mahal ready to open in a few weeks. It will be interesting to see what color they will produce under these lights. I did take another pic of the PP tonight. The colors seems to have changes a little more to a fuller yellow. Makes my day to see them open. I'm so glad to hear that youur seeds are doing well! I know that you would have no problem!! : ) Glad they have finally sprouted for you!! Laura - I hope our schedules can mesh this fall when I have more time to do things other than those things I -have- to do. I don't do sushi but there's always something on the menu that I would love! :) Yes, patience is a virtue, or so they say. I possess more than realized! lol Hi Jen! Yes, we've had some heat and humidity but nothing like what will come the next couple of months. I dread it, even if the plumies will love it. I'm getting too old to take the heat. joan - thank you! Yes, I see that ya'll have been having some crazy weather for this time of year. Us, too. We have had some cooler than norm temps, but don't see much of that in the forecast. Penang Peach is such a trooper, huh? I have 3 trees. Just love them. You'll see your deeper colors soon! Dave - I love Intense Rainbow, too! When scouring the internet, I've read that IR can be a rangy grower but mine hasn't gotten big enough yet for that to be the case. It doesn't seem like mine is going to be a compact grower, though. I was getting ready to post another IR pic, but suddenly photobucket went down. gidget - but you have such nice weather out there. Hmmm... humidity or brighter blooms color? Gorgeous! I still think Penang Peach has some of the best foliage I've ever seen, not to mention great blooms.

It's a great plant. Barbra Glad your cutting is taking off.

Joan, its in a 20 gallon pot right now and has been for going on three years. I'll be root pruning and up potting next March into a 25 gallon pot. That seems to be the biggest I can carry. After that I should have a spot to plant in ground.

Penang Peach is a must have in anyone's collection.

I only have one blooming right now and of course it is my " Psycho". She is one that always keeps me on my toes. Hoping you will have success....

My ETLD will be next to open.. Then Kapalua.. ;-). YEA!

Thank you for all of the eye candy!!! Now, I'm thinking of heading outside with the flashlight and doing a walk thru and check on my " babies..."

The slugs are a pain right now, but I'm on them...

Glad to see all is growing well for you!!!

I bet the girls are helping out in the garden too? They are so precious...

Hi KMS2, are you sure what you bought is Loretta? Here is my Loretta, it looks completely different.

K - beautiful blooms!!! I can't wait for my Penang to bloom, love it! I love my Loretta too - I rooted it last year, it bloomed profusely and branched into 3 for me, and now its pushing an inflo to bloom again!

I got mine as a generous gift from Gabby - here's mine last year:

It does seem a bit light. I am 100% certain I bought it at the PSA Ft Bend Sale from a PSA vendor which IMO has a lot of value.

It shares some general flower characteristics and has a grainy look. It is a part shade location and weather hadn't been as hot as usual the week before. So with that being said and it being the first time this rooted cutting has bloomed I think it will true up similar to yours and E's (BTW E, great job. I also have that Lei Rainbow rooted and ready to go for you.).

Yes... You did take all of the "cold beer". Lol!!! Just send the keys please? We haven' t started the boat since... ;-). If you send beer for the slugs, you better buy a brewery!!!

Rox... I have heard about putting out beer for the slugs, but I'm wondering how much I would have to put out? I think I could buy some really nice rooted cutting instead of spending on PBR. Lol! I have them lining my deck above and below, so it would have to be in bowls or beer trough 's everywhere. I once outlined the containers with Epsom salt and it worked well until it rained and it finally started to wash away. Those little critters are some nasty little buggers. I wil pick them off as I am telling them what I think of them, just so the neighbors will hear.. ( only kidding..) and then I will toss them or... Lets just say, they won't be returning. ;-)

So, if K wants to donate the beer, we can have a party as we line the decks with beer. Take the boat out for " sea trials.." Catch dinner and have a good time!! Maybe even have chocolate covered strawberries for dessert! I'll even make them myself!!! Gotta love chocolate!! ;-)

Love those pics, K.. Hopefully I Will have some pics to share soon. I'm also in the process of rooting a cutting of a Kapalua and I think it is deciding it wants to stick around here in VB. MY tree is doing great thanks to my great friends... :). This cutting from what I understand ( Kapalua) is very difficult to root, so I am really working hard to make this one work. It means so much to me!!! Merci Beaucoup!!!

The easiest way is to put some small containers, like empty yogurt containers, in the ground, with the lip at ground level, and put an inch or two of beer in them. The slugs crawl in and drown.

Del, do you think that would work for grasshoppers? Jk! I keep seeing leaf and flower damage from the occasional hopper or katydid-kinda thing. Not too many but enough to aggravate me.

I've been lucky on the plumies, but I have a second year dwarf nectarine that I kept noticing the tips of the branches dying, having been chewed through an inch or so below the tip. Finally yesterday found one of those tiny green grasshoppers on one. Mystery solved, but no idea how to keep that from happening.
