Penang Peach has finally decided to open...

Hello Everyone,

I have had an infloresence on my Penang Peach since i brought my trees inside in November. When i decided to put some trees away, i didnt really think that this inflo would continue to grow muchless stay on the tree. So i decided it was going into the backroom with some other trees to relax for the winter. Well...i finally felt terrible about my decision and moved it under my T -5 setup that i have upstairs. It has taken awhile for it to finally grow and show me what the beauty of this particular variety has to offer. I have always heard of how beautiful the Penang Peach was and really wanted to see it bloom during the summer so i could see the deep colors that we all have seen in photos or pictures from my friends that have this variety.

When i came home from work, this is what i finally found waiting for me. The colors are beautiful but i cant really smell any fragrance. I would assume because of the growing conditions that it is in ( i am certainly not complaining!!! : ) I am so happy to see the colors that it does display. Really, i was prepared to have lighter colors since the time of the year.

Gorgeous, Laura! And in those photos the petals look like it's a pagoda-type bloom, very like Jackie or Taj Mahal. What a delight for mid-winter!

Your adenium seedlings are finally sprouted--whew! I was worried that I'd let them get too dry and they weren't viable but five little sprouts are growing in a sunny window now. I'm a happy camper--thank you again!

Dave, I live in western NY, with Lake Erie being about 10 minutes a way from my house. Typically, if we get any 90's it is mid to late August. Last year was an unusally hot and humid summer for us. We were experiencing 90's in July. I am hoping that this summer I will be able to see the full colors associated with the Penang Peach. I did read from an older post that Bill had thought that maybe using a clear plasticv bag over the inflo may raise the temps enough to bring out the full colors. If I have the washed out yellow color, I will have to give this a try. If it doesn't work and I still have plain yellow flowers, I will have not trouble putting it back under my HPS light again. I really enjoy having the fragrance permeat my apartment. At the most, I have had 9 flowers open at once, with an intense fragrance that I can smell into my living room. I can only imagine what this plumeria will be like once it grows to 4 to 5 ft tall! I am really excited about the futute of this plumeria. I am actually planning on buying 2 more of them this spring. I originally considered waiting till my PP was large enough to prune back but I don't want to wait that long! I also came across plumeria 'Elsie' on Ebay and also on The American Plumeria Society website. It is a Penang Peach seedling. The coloration is not the same but more of a red and white swirl. Hi Chuy!! I love the color too, but hoping that it will deepen with the heat ! Cheers!! James, the trees are coming to life!!! I finally see other inflos forming It should be a great year!! Hope you are enjoying yours!!! I do love PP, but I wish it would deepen up just a little.. It's still early and there is another inflo, so time will tell! Emily.. Thank you!! It is a huge inflo and is very healthy too!! Some others are smaller and don't produce like this beauty.. Thank you disneyhorse! Hollis thank you so much! Ya know, I was really wondering that too - does anyone know how much I can expect them to change and is it usually for the better? LOL! I would figure (hope) they would only improve with time? The Kimi M. seedling went through a progression of flower shapes and color variations in a few short days, almost as if the plant is 'learning' how to bloom, getting used to blooming, like cleaning the pipes out to get primed! Mima thank you! Here is a comparison of the 3 blooming Penang's at different stages. It's so strange because they look so different at any given time, but you can certainly see the similarities between seedling #1 and seedling #3. Thank you Maark! I went out to smell it earlier and there was a large lizard out there close to it and he had a big bug in his mouth so I had to wait to come back later so as not to interfere with his excellent work! I also have 2 adorable lizard babies that I see on my plants too, they are precious! This is him from earlier this morning : But I just went out again and it smells fruity to me. Not super strong but it's there, very nice and sweet. LOL! Nicole, thank you so much and I will definitely put you on the list for future cuttings - how awesome that anyone would even want a cutting of my seedling!!! I'm really excited to see how the blooms develop as the plant matures. I will admit, them blooming does make it so much more fun FOR SURE - I was not at my wits end with them but I could absolutely see how after several years it's not fun at all if you've gotten nothing. I had moments during the winter though that I got rid of many seedlings out of frustration or because they looked sickly, not knowing what to do and just being worn out. I was watering them in my guest bathroom bathtub and was in the vicious spider mite battle- I know more now and cringe thinking of the ones that I let go, but the reality is sometimes seedlings are fun and sometimes they aren't, just like adult plants - hauling in for winter, etc.

Dave, that is a picture perfect inflo! Anything with a shape that great, inflo that full, and color and fragarnce that lovely is pretty darned sexy, IMO. (Greg, I'm 99% sure that Cali Sunset is a PP seedling and it is very hard to tell them apart.) And the foliage! When I saw the big PP in Kms2's yard the leaves were the first thing I noticed, they are so distinctive. Mine hasn't bloomed again--I only got it last spring--but I'm hoping it will next spring. Jen, it could just be that the smaller flowers and odd leaves are a result of a smaller root system. It should catch up next spring. Definitely a nice variety to have multiples of, from what I've read. I also received a GS from Bill (thx, B!) though mine had to fit into a suitcase! No giant antlers for me! poke, poke, LAURA, hehe

Great pics! Everything looks like its doing very well. I finally got a desert rose to survive inside during the winter this year (I guess third time is the charm!).
Thanks for sharing! Always nice to see plumeria blooms inside. Nothing reminds me of summer more than some plumeria blooms!

Beautiful blooms. It really is interesting how the petal tips are furling over like that. I bet it has great color because you have it right up against the light.

Laura, going back to my pics of PP from summer (1st inflo on a newly-bought rooted cutting) I found a few that showed that same pointed petal.

This one is either splashed from a virus, or from extreme heat stress:

Your first blooms look like they're a good size.

Hey Jen,

I am so happy to have these blooms right now. I agree, the blooms do have unique shape. If you look at the pic with the trees under the lights, you can see a inflo from my Taj Mahal ready to open in a few weeks. It will be interesting to see what color they will produce under these lights. I did take another pic of the PP tonight. The colors seems to have changes a little more to a fuller yellow. Makes my day to see them open.

You have a great eye!! I do have my PP close to the lights. I took another pic tonight of the blooms and you can see the color change already. Seems like the original blooms had more color than the ones that opened today. It still is a beauty to me and im so pleased. I dont have any fragrance though. : ( Oh well, i can still enjoy the beauty!!

My Penang Peach wants to keep on growing!!

She is pushing another inflo on the other stem right now... Im sooooooooooooo excited!!!

I cant smell any fragrance on the blooms so far, but hopefully i may have the pleasure of some small hint of fragrance...

Wanted to share with you alll!!

I'll post a pic when i get home of the newly emerging inflo. I had to laugh at what we were all talking about when we "Inspect" our trees.. i looked at this stem on my PP and thought..is it? Yep..it is!!!

LOOKIN GOOD AS ALWAYS:) I am always so JEALOUS of what you can accomplish(color wise). This year I am going to give those T-5's a try. The indoor care is where this tropical plant addiction kills me! I figure I need that and another HPS light and I should be ok for a few years....UNTIL I NEED TO CUT A HOLE IN MY CEILING! LOL!

I need to get pics of my 2 newest additions....not plumeria related but still pretty cool. I picked up a new Navel Orange and Meyer lemon tree!!
