looking for certain fragrances...

OK, so a beginner looking for relatively free blooming plants with moderate to strong fragrance for containers that will be brought indoors in the winter. I'd rather buy a few perfect for me plants than several 'almosts'. Color is secondary but big, showy, long lasting blossoms are always a plus.

What's your recommendations for:

classic frangapani scent

vanilla scent

sweet scent

fruity scent

My favorite with a rose scent, is Magnum Opus. It has 4 inch non stop blooms. I bought mine at Florida Colors, its a fast grower. Barbra

Check out the Buck rose Bright Melody. Not sure if this is the color you had in mind, but mine is so healthy, grows well, blooms lots and the particular color of red just glows - you can spot this rose out of all the others blooming. I really like it......It is not a bright "arterial blood" red, but a softer glowing red. Or if you want something like Complicata but just a bit darker, and it also is a real eyecatcher, is the shrub Chuckles. I just bought another because I like it so much. Healthy, always in bloom.

Lynn, I think Cymbaline possesses that fragrance more strongly than many better known roses. I love it, too. (Now, if Cymbaline would ONLY bloom more for us!) The other rose that carried a powerful wallop of that fragrance for me was Austin's 'Fair Bianca.' NOT a vigorous grower, but the blooms were reminiscent (to me at least) of 'Mme. Plantier.' And the myrrh scent was overwhelming. Fair Bianca is probably the ONLY Austin rose that, at this point, I would like to try again. Jeri

Peace is a beautiful rose and it has a nice story to it. Evidently Francois Meilland, the original breeder had the intention to name her after his mother. He distributed the cuttings over a few places for growth trials. Apparently after WW2, he wasn't able to communicate with people about the rose's name, so americans affectionately named it "Peace" after the war. I think you should give it a chance. It really is a "classic" hybrid tea rose and I don't believe she can be surpassed. I have grown her twice. Unfortunately I lost the second one during the polar vortex a few years ago. I chose Chicago Peace instead but I intend to grow Peace again in the near future. Maybe it is for nostalgic reason.

Eam- We recently moved to a new (to us) house with a hideous u-shaped kitchen that's original to the house: 70s vintage, and not in a good way! Naturally I'm planning for a remodel;) (may be a few years yet, but I'm getting a jump on it!) I'm thinking of all the similar kitchens on gardenweb that I can remember. Scrappys is actually more similar to my layout because it has an extra doorway, but I remember being impressed with the other kitchen when it was revealed and I wanted to check it out again. If anyone can think of anymore u shaped kitchens I can ogle, post away. Thanks for the help!

Hi rcantor! I have that same list saved to my favorites and use it as a reference all the time. But I have seen some discrepancies so I would not use one source if scent is important to you.

Right now I'm doing the same thing... going for fragrance over flower. This I'm doing for my husband. When I feel I may have the scents covered, then I will be looking for flower appeal for myself. :)

Hope this helps a little!!

Remember, Fragrance can be strong or light for the different climates.. Heat, humidity play a major part in fragrance too! As well as coloration. IMO...

Princess Victoria smells like a sweet lilac or jasmine fragrance. Very fragrant to me. I love this one!

Henry Apples Dupree is another sweet fragrance. It is hard to descirbe other than..Sweet...

Daisy Wilcox has a spicy fragrance . This is one beauty!!

classic scent is Celadine, hands down one of the best. Singapore white.
Sweet is Charlotte Ebert (perfume-y), Henry Apples Dupree
spicy is Kimi Moragne, Psycho
peachy is panang peach, aztec gold

Vanilla scent...Jacqueline
From Exotic Plumeria. This flower smells exactly like vanilla and as it matures it smells like a snickers bar.

Do you mean each blossom starts out vanilla and ages to snickers or as the plant matures instead of a vanilla fragrance it produces the snickers fragrance? Thanks.

About Jaqueline...as the flower ages, it takes on a snickers bar smell. Very sweet carmel scent. The plant is a fairly tall and fast grower. But I am very impressed with the thickness and the sturdiness of the branches it produces. Very unplumeria like. It's a white flower, about three inches wide, with a very prominent yellow throat. First inflo this season easily produced over thirty flowers. Right now I have three more developing inflos that are much larger than the first.
