black plastic. The clay is inferior for growth and the roots stick to the sides. You can use a pot that is glazed inside but most collectors use the black plastic until the plants are rather large and the root ball is well established (3-5 years depending on the variety). Also fertilizer salts leak into and through the clay pots collecting the salts.

I also use standard plastic nursery pots. They aren't the most attractive containers so I sometimes will set the plastic pot inside of a decorative container. Just make sure the decorative pot has adequate drainage.

Fertilize regularly during the growing season. I stop feeding about 4 weeks before it's time to store them for the winter.

thank you tdogdad and karyn1 for your input. That is what I thought. But I can't seem to find the black pots anywhere here in Ut. So I have both my plumerias in dark green pots I hope that will be just as good. I also would like to know if the dwarf care is the same as a reg plumeria and fertilizer? I have been useing spray-n-grow is this good stuff? And one more thing. Can a plumeria get too much sun? Thanks again Marie.

check with landscapers. They often have black pots. Green is fine. Black is hotter. Dwarfs are same plants just short growing. Spray-n-grow is excellent in between fertilizing unless you use Bill's perfect fertilizer that they sell, then mix with SNG and foliar feed. In Utah, a plumeria cannot get too much sun but you might mist them in the mornings because the dry air is a bit hard.

Thank you tdogdad. I was starting to wonder about the hot sun here. About a month ago the leaves on Noni my first plumeria were drooping and turning yellow and I followed the advice of some of the members here and repoted and it had been cold so I had the plant indoors by a window. The leaves got better and so did the sun, so I put her back outside and on this last Friday after work I go and check on her and the leaves were droopy and turning yellow again. As for the ferilizer it is Bill's perfect fertilizer. I'm not to sure on how often to fertilize though. I have been doing it every two weeks is that ok? and how long will it take for the two of the plumerias to bloom? Thanks for all your help. Marie

everu twp weeks is fine, Marie, as long as Noni was already rooted. Blooming comes when the plant is ready- often the second year, or the third. sometimes the first year. Some plants wait until 4-5 years. The good thing is that once they start they usually continue every season and as they grow exponentially, so does the amount of flowers. I would suggest outside in the day unless a cold spell below 50, and inside at night if the night is colder than 50. good luck. Bill

Thank you Bill for all your help. I hope to see some flowers soon. I can't wait! Noni is about two feet tale with really big leaves and new ones coming out every day. The dwarf plumeria (Pila) is new to me but is way cute and small. Both are rooted and look really good as of now. I want to add more to the little family, what kind would you recommend for me next? I always recommend you look at lots of flowers and ask lots of opinions and then be selective of what you buy. Getting rid of plumerias to make room is like getting rid of one of your kids. So buy really good plants in smaller numbers. It depends on what you like. I like the large flowers and some for fragrance. I think everyone should have Celadine as it is the classic lei flower with a great scent. A great starter is Calif.Sally, Daisy Wilcox, Jeannie Moragne, Aztec Gold, Cerise, and Guillot's sunset. Spend more time investigating the exotics as they can be a delight or a waste of money. The problem is there are hundreds of varieties and it is easy to find something to like about all of them. Marie- I picked these because they are excellent flowers and more established plants so they should be less expensive and more available. They are generally big flowers, prolific bloomers, and colorful (deep pink, white pink, red/orange, gold yellow, bright red, and pink and white). I really like rainbows and tri colors but these are such an individual choice and each person likes different combinations. I find reds hardest to grow and most sensitive to cold. If you cannot find any of these I have pics of all. Bill

I really like the colors of the pink pansy, but I already killed one of those :(. I don't have much room here so I like to stick with the smaller plumerias but there is only what the dwarf? Next year when we move I would like to fill the back yard with plumerias ;). Marie

Jungle Jack sells several excellent rooted dwarfs and grafted dwarfs.. Pink Pansy is my wife's favorite and usually fairly healthy. You might look at mauiplumeriagardens also for rooted plants if you have trouble starting cuttings. Also, Florida Colors sells grafted plants which are cuttings grafted onto rooted seedlings. The rooted plants are usually a bit larger. I have bought both kinds. Bill
