N.C. Zoo Photos

Wasn't aware of all the palms that were growing in Ashboro, N.C. and the cacti that they had outside was amazing. Makes me want to go back this winter to see if the stay out all year unprotected. I remember the agaves but some of the taller cacti seem new to me! Alot of the tags were missing so I don't have I.D.s on the different agaves and cacti.

I don't have any advice for you as aphid problems are rare in my garden and knock on wood, never anywhere near as severe as you have experienced. If pesticides have not worked for you then I recomend not using them anymore as they are very effective at killing aphid predators. That's the cruel irony of pesticides (broad spectrum ones anyway). One uses them to kill something and it may or may not kill that something, but it also kills the predators and then some bug not affected by the pesticide sets up shop and explodes it's population. If you are using soap sprays are you using an actual insecticidal soap or a dish 'soap' that may not really be soap? If you are using anything not labeled as an insecticidal soap please stop. Too much potential for plant problems. It's probably too late this year, but battling them with very short lived, on contact only pesticides like insecticidal soaps or even sharp water sprays *may* be of benefit down the road. Predators populate slower than pests so there is some truth in saying the pest population has to be present for awhile to give the predators a chance to move in and set up shop. Anyway, good luck and happy growing. It can be frustrating at times, but gardening is definitely one of those things where it's more about the journey than the destination.

Hibiscus Cultivars at the San Diego Zoo ID?

Our family was down at the San Diego Zoo this week, and I was able to snap a few photos of some really beautiful hibiscus. I'd like to add these 3 cultivars to my yard. Hoping someone on this forum can ID the cultivars. The bottom one I believe is 'Rainbow Christy', a foundation hibiscus from Charle Black of Hidden Valley Hibiscus, which I did have in my yard, but I fear it has gotten crowded out, as I haven't seen it bloom in quite a while (and, it is impossible to find, now): Patty S. Yellow Rose at the Zoo

It does look a lot like the photos of Topaz Jewel but not as dark of a yellow and no pink on the tips. At least I didn't notice any pink tips on the flowers at the zoo. Thank you for asking your friend about the rose. That would be great if she knows what it is. It was such an odd thing to turn the corner and see all those roses in bloom climbing through the trees. Thank you for your help with this.

Oh yes.. I dance, I just don't compete. (anymore) :) There is a lot of social dancing at this event. In between each contest is lots and lots of dancing. The floor is full of couples most of the time. They are out there dancing until 4 or 5 every morning. On Sunday night lots of people stay up all night dancing, and then catch their plane back home. I go out dancing here 2 or 3 nights a week and I moderate several local dance email lists ---when I'm not pulling weeds or trying to kill other plants. :)

Thanks guys, I really enjoyed all the palms. They had about 100 windmill and needle palms planted.

THey look like they have a wise gardener who knows what they are doing. We used to have a cold palm friendly gardener at the BBG. The new person didn't cover the tall tracky palm for 2 yrs and after last winters blizzard it finally gave up the ghost.

In the last photo with the large palm, is that a tent like structure sustained all winter?

The last photos or any photos where i stated that where inside, is in a giant glass dome. Very humid area for sustaining tropicals. The desert area was extremely hot and the tropicals were actually a little cool. I can't wait to go back this winter to see his they protect their outside cacti.

It looks like the outside Cactus are the hardy variety,
even the barrel in the 10th(?)pic is hardy to possibly single
digits if kept dry-
I had one in my Cactus bed for 2 years but trapped moisture finally got it.

In some ways Cactus are more fun(if not m/fun than definitely easier(-:)than palms.

Jim- I just have not come across a hardy cacti that grows vertically in our zone. Asheboro is in zone 7b. I have my doubts that that cactus in pic 10 stays out unprotected. They also had 8' tall cactus like in pic # 4 outside. I bet they dig it up.

Yea,I think a Saguaro in the desert is in trouble around 15-20F if not more.
I do think the barrel is probably o.k. there- as I mentioned
(I think)mine survived single digits at least/most?(-:

I does look a bit behaggered though-sometimes areole loss or
damage (if it has some)is a sign it has endured near fatal cold.

Those are some big Saguaro! Imagine one of those bad boys falling on somebody. Ouch! That first butia looks like it's in a nice microclimate, under that large tree, raised bed, and next to a brick building. Looks nicely protected.

Islandbreeze you can tell that pindo was in a courtyard, very well protected. The other pindo was out by the Elephants and had received winter damage. It only had a few fronts on it.

I would hate to be under one of those cactus if they did fall. But I really would love to have a saguaro skeleton like the ones they had.
