Cuttings questions on red claws

Hi,

this is a question I have never asked. All of the cuttings given to me all have red claws on top of them. Was I suppose to cut off the claws, so the cutting could grow its own???? If so how do you do you do that?

On one green cutting because of this, claws were on it, believe its going to have pre-mature flowering growing a inflo, no leaves, abviously no roots.

I only cut full leaves. Cut them one quarter inch from the where the stem attaches to the cutting and let the quarter inch piece yellow and drop off. The claws I just leave. Remember it takes 60 to 80 days for a plant to root and leaf out. This year many of mine took 90 days because of the foggy spring. If they are not black and mushy at the bottom, then forget about them and find something else to do. Don't mother hen cuttings. Leave them hot and dry and leave them alone. Too much messing with them leads to problems.

Hi Tdogdad,

Part of the reason for that question of the red claws all ready on the cuttings before planting, is two of my cuttings are putting out inflos no leaves no roots.. what will happen to that cutting? will it eventually get the roots and leaves?
Yes, have been accused of being a mother hen..ha ha. mostly by my kids.

rooting without the help of heating pads or hormones can take quite a while with this species. If you are getting top growth that is good in that your plants are not dying although if you are getting flowers or fruits as you say you should pinch these off as they can inhibit rooting. Normal leaf growth is fine. The bumps you see are callus formation and this is a sign that your roots are or should be growing soon. Patients is the key with cuttings. good luck

Personally I think these acts, De clawing, tail docking, ECT are cruel, Nature intended them for some reason, otherwise the creature wouldn't have them. Depending on what you alter on a dog or cat you could be removing the basic defenses, ways of talking to others of its species, or subjecting it to infection or pain. Then again there are SOME things we as responsible pet owners MUST remove on a pet such as reproductive organs.

Karen,
Most people cut off the inflos because the cutting will use all of it's stored energy to produce flowers instead of rooting. It's a gamble to leave the inflo on. I have left them on and they have been fine. Generally the first flowers will open, then rooting and leafing will take place shortly after, but it does drain the cutting. If it begins to wrinkle it is running out of juice, however, I have had some do this and then as soon as the first leaf opens they plump back up.

As I said, it is a gamble and safer to cut off the inflo.

Tony is right. It is a gamble. What is in your favor is that California has a very long rooting season with the indian summers running into November. Also consider how long the plant was in the ground before it started producing the inflo. If over 30 days the odds in leaving it are a bit better. Watch the claws. If they seem to get longer you might gamble. It is hard to cut of an inflo, but after a while it is the best thing to do.

thanks to both of you, Been in the pots for over 6 weeks..have 2 cuttings doing this, going to take the gamble and see what happens..3rd one see the claws opening and greenies showing. All three cuttings are plastic pink.,,gonna be hot this weekend!
