Should I water this cutting yet?? see picture

I put this cutting I got from Hawaii in some soil and watered it on 5/11/10 and this is what it looks like today 6/24/10. Should I start to water it now or wait till the leaves get come out more? Eric.{{gwi:1174711}}

Hello Konatiki,

Your cutting is coming along nicely!!! I would wait to water until the leaves are at least 4-6 inches long...seems hard to do (I know) but you may cause root rot if you water before the roots develop.

The other post about the inflo...I would not water that one either. Wait for the leaves to form and then water normally (of course wait until it dries out to water again) If the inflo developes before the leaves, you may think about cutting it so the energy can be focused on the roots instead of the inflo. I had the same problem and waited to see if the leaves would form with the inflo...it did!!!
So, I had the joy of seeing this beautiful flower grow along with the leaves of my cutting!!!

Be patient...that is the key to growing Plumerias. If you feel like you need to give a little water, then use the rim method that some of the experts use here on this forum.
They water a little around the outer rim of the planter (keeping the water away from the stem).

Good luck and keep us posted on how they grow!!

Thank you for the info. The soil is very dry so much so that when I move the soil with my hand it's down right dusty. So I'm guessing I should give it or them maybe 1/4 cup water each using the rim method. Maybe use a drop of superthrive.

Thanks for the ideas. I could go crazy with orange roses apparently! I think I'll have to rule out Amber Queen which does look right but I think this plant has been in the ground longer than the 80s. The previous owner thought it had been in since the greenhouse was installed in the late 50s or early 60s. The classy fence post is newer. :) What makes a climber a climber instead of something that was pruned funny? Aside from the obvious trunks, this one doesn't put out any long branches. But it's had so much "shaping" I can't tell.

I have a feeling you are not going to have any dahlias this year. Your dahlias should be starting to bud, even bloom by now. I would certainly contact Swan Island so that you can get advice and a guarantee of good bulbs for next year. Did you verify that the tubers you got had eyes on them? Personally, I have had the worst luck buying tubers from mail order companies. I have been growing dahlias for about 10 years, and the best ones I get are the ones I buy from Home Depot and Lowes. I have bought from some of the best rated dahlia suppliers, and they do not grow well. I planted 14 tubers this year, and none are in bloom and at least half of them are too small at this stage to grow enough to produce blooms. And the cool spring and early summer certainly did not help.

It is helpfull to cut the stem end with a sharp knife or razor under running water and rightaway put the cutting where it should be. This will allow the cutting to drink better. If you want to get very technical about it, you can use pre-boiled cooled water to minimize the possibility of rotting. Furthermore, add a quarter of Aspirin tablet to make the environment slightly acidic. Most bacteria cannot be active in acidic medium. The cutting has enough stored food/energy in it to start a root. So it is immaterid if rooting is done in water or soil. What is important is "after root growth" that the cutting can benefit from nutrients from the medium. That is why , it would be better to pot the cutting as soon as you see roots. cyrus

They might have been in cold storage longer than your grapes. Some places keep dormant plants in cold storage until they get put out for sale. I've noticed that my new fruit trees I put in from Raintree are leafing out slower than the ones I bought from local nurseries. I think that might be due to having been kept in cold storage longer... so they seem to take longer to WAKE UP. A theory only, mind you. I also planted rasberries this year. Most are showing growth, but some are not. I don't give up on plants easy, so I will just leave them for a few months and see what happens. I'd rather wait and give them a chance. They are likely just being slow coming out of dormancy. Same thing with the bare root roses I bought this spring. My old roses are nearly in full leaf... while my new bare roots barely have any shoots at all yet. Just give them time.

I would wait...let others give their opinion as well before you water your cutting. You can always mist the stem every 10 days to give it moisture. They really need to be dry to promote root growth. It's very hard to not give them water, but as the saying goes...if you think that they need water, wait a few more days (trees with full heads).

Everyone feels the need to water, but these cuttings need to stay on the dry side and to be left alone (so very hard to do!!!)...hopefully more will give you advice...

P.S. I also wanted to let you know that I still have a cutting that I started 4/1/10 and it has claws about 3 inches and looks like it will start to open into leaves within the week!!! So all cuttings are different and may take a little longer than others!!! Hope this helps!

I would suggest moving the pebbles away from the stem. They can get hot enough in sunlight to burn the stem and kill the plant.
