Adenium Obesum, not that I need another addiction

I went to a trade days kind of market this weekend to check out a plumeria seller that I heard was there. Ended up with three new plumies (no name varieties but nice). However, at a different vendor I found an Adenium. Having been curious about these for the last year or so, but never having seen one I purchased it for $25. It looked a little different than pics I've seen but after reading some more about them I realized I just need to repot and raise it up to expose the caudex. So I that's what I did and below is what I have. It is about 22 inches from soil to the top. Hopefully the repoting didn't strees it too much and hopefully I can just keep it alive now!

Wow Kevin, $25 for that beauty is a steal!! Been wanting to get a few myself, but I'm just afraid that I won't be able to stop buying and I have no room at the moment...Does she have a scent? Not sure about the scent on Adenium....

Kevin- that is an awesome one! And a steal at that price. I have 7 (just common US varieties) I'm surprised at how much they will take. I did a severe pruning and in just a couple of weeks I have new branches, flowers are starting too. Don't worry if it drops leaves after being repotted they'll grow right back. They are addictive. I am waiting for some seeds to come from an eBay seller. I figure I'll mess with that too. Congrats on the new addiction...LOL

Nikki-just buy "one" to give it a try. That one won't take up much space :o)

I respectfully disagree: Get it out of the wet soil immediately. Check for rotted roots. Snip off any mushy roots. Look for mushy spots in the caudex. If the caudex has already gotten mushy, it probably is too late. If not, repot properly with none of the old soil remaining. Yes, it should be in a shallow (azalea) pot instead of a deep one. Hello Everyone, Hi Karen!!! My Adeniums are all inside since early November and they have dropped a few leaves, moreso than during the normal growing season. They all are still active and they are blooming as well. I do have them under lights and when they finally do show signs of going dormant, i will then put them aside and let them rest along with my Plumeria. I do give them less water in the winter, but they do get more attention then the Plumeria during the dormant cycle. Sounds good radovan!! Congratulations on having blooms up in Canada!! Soonergirl, Nice adenium and other friends growing in the background. I have close to 40 desert roses growing that I started from seed and that allowed me a few to experiment with. I cut the tops off when they were about 4 inches tall. That left just a stump with no leaves. It took a couple weeks, but now they are showing multiple branches. So I'd say you could prune the top if you want, but half the fun is seeing what crazy shape they take on. I've heard of some folks using hard aluminum wire to shape the branches. A bit to much work for me, but a good idea with one or two plants. Here is one of mine growing in a 6 inch pot. This one did not get any top pruning. I did loose some branches due to scale last winter, but it's bounced back being outside. From Garden 2010

Brrian, you should check out the adenium/desert rose forum. Ltran on there is in Houston and has the most amazing collection of big DRs. I've seen triples offered here and there but never quads. There's a link for a place to order online below. George, I went to Joseph's nursery in Pearland and they had a great selection (in June) of DRs, even doubles. I was told they only bring them into the sales areas when they're blooming though I saw lots of giant ones in cachepots that weren't. Definitely worth a call. Thanks guys! I was a little worried my wife was going to freak out. I had already purchased three large plumies and was just wandering around the market while she looked at other things when I found the DR. Luckily though, she loves it! No scent on this DR unfortunately, but I have 30 plumies to take care of that for me! LOL!

Kevin, maybe your wife will be the one addicted to Adenium, and all you have to do is sit back and enjoy while she does all the buying....

Oh yeah that was def good deal considering that the plant must be at least 4 years old judging by its size. My addiction to Adeniums started after I purchased one in walmart for $15. After researching about Adeniums more, I started growing them from seeds... and yeah now I have about 80 of them. It is one very easy plant to grow from seeds. I feed them liquid food mixed with supertrive and they are out of control! One thing I love to do is to order different colors of seeds and mix them up and trick myself into not knowing which seed is what color. In the end when they bloom for the first time it's always a surprise to find out what color they are! lol
