You probably won't see much in terms of growth. Royals love high heat and humidity, and although they will tolerate cooler temps, I wouldn't expect any significant growth. A spear, maybe two.

Royals are extremely large palms for in-outdoor cultivation, as are tall coconuts.Just curious- what are you planning to do with your large palms when they outgrow your confines -R

I have several friends that live just north of Fort Lauderdale. I can always give the palms to one of them to plant or sell them to someone while I'm staying there. Provided I take care of my coconut palm over the winter and next summer is anything like this past one It will probably outgrow my house by the end of next summer. Unless I move into a house with taller ceilings.

Andy how did the cubans do? I am thinking of trying one here in Burbank, Ca. What do you think?

I think you have several if not more years with your cocos and for sure with the cubans. They all grow fast but not that fast. Pot plants are differnt than ones in the ground in warm temps all year. You have a long time coming before you have to give them away, then you can just give them to ME. Dont worry about where you can take them, I am just half way from you to Ft Lauderdale. I dont care how big they are, I will find away. :-)

Royal Cubans are gorgeous, without a doubt my favorite in terms of beauty. They should be able to grow a few winter fronds under the conditions you describe. I find that epecially when there is snow cover outside, an unobstructed southern exposure provides great winter light conditions. Royals overwinter quite well indoors. Personally, I find them much easier in this respect than Adonidia (Christmas palm). Be on the watch for spider mite (moderately prone--nothing excessive). Definitely would move them outdoors for the growing season (though you might decide to wait now till the coming season as it's late in the year). True, eventually they want to be towering trees but growth in containers in a northern climate is only moderate (not fast), so no immediate need to take the roof off your house or send them on a one-way-trip to Boca or Lauderdale. Cuban royals are not very fast at that age.You should get several years of watching them grow in a pot.

Unfortunatly these palms bought it over the winter. Major mistake trying to get them going in late summer. I was just over anxious. Rule to northern palm growers, if you want someting get it in the spring

Andy do you still have these plams? How did they do? Im gonna get one or two adults in the spring I was just curious.
